Retro fantasy of the Jazz Age
Like Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, Old Sport is a retro fantasy of the Jazz Age.
In the film, the hero - a screen writer wrestling with his script about a nostalgia shop - is whisked off by a group of Lost Generation revellers to the haunts of the literati. They travel at midnight, in the back of an upright motor car - complete with liveried chauffeur. Old Sport could be the smell of the carriage where the party is in full swing; a sour Bandit leather, boozy rosewood, deep lavender absolute and animal notes; it's a fougère de caractère...
But with notes like creosote and Fairy Liquid detergent (Dawn dish in the US) this is also eccentric. It's diverting, and a bit weird, and as a period piece it's as convincing as the film's Hemingway, whose monologue - with a dozen uses of 'and' in a single phrase - is something to behold ... but it holds up the action nonetheless.
Once it settles down though, Old Sport becomes woody-cool and brown, a leather aromatic with plenty of powder; hardly a fougère at all by the end of the night...
It's nice though, and with a vintage hint of Knize Ten's rubber and gabardine, Old Sport is right for Scott Fitzgerald as he's seen in the film; urbane, well dressed, an all round Good Sport.
