Forest Without Elves
Anyone expecting a vanilla-resinous, cozy winter scent based on the name will be disappointed.
Mandy Aftel's Amber is rather cool, bitter, and deep dark green, not only visually in the bottle but also olfactorily. A vibrant coniferous forest with trees dripping with resin, small islands of herbs and sweet grass in between. There are no enchanting fairies or elves with shimmering wings like in the enchanted forest of Ormonde Jayne's Woman. In the Amber forest, the elves carry bows and arrows and remain silently hidden in the deep shadows of the woods because they do not want to be disturbed.

Lavender Absolute, as used here, bears little resemblance to the overkill of blooming, blue-violet lavender fields or ethereal lavender oil. The absolute is green, smells gently herbal and slightly sweet like coumarin (the typical scent in dried sweet grass and woodruff), and hardly at all like lavender flowers. In combination with the heavy, strongly resinous yet soft scent of labdanum, which justifies the name "Amber," and balsamic fir green, the perfect illusion of a forest walk on a sunny late summer day is created. Cool, invigorating, bitter, and dark, yet also soft and sensual.

Certainly not for everyday wear and probably not for everyone, but definitely worth a test for lovers of absolutely unsynthetic natural scents.
Mandy Aftel exclusively uses natural raw materials, in my opinion in a very ingenious way, clearly standing out from often rather trivial and fleeting other scents made from purely natural substances. For a natural perfume, "Amber" is very long-lasting - easily lasting through a 10-hour workday on me.

Amber no, Amber yes, Amber no, Amber yes, Amber no ...
Right now, I’m wondering which perfume Vicky Pollard would wear? What? You don’t know Vicky Pollard? Well, then quickly check it out on YouTube and have a laugh. Otherwise, you wouldn’t quite understand the headline.

However, one thing should be clear: it’s certainly not Amber by Aftelier. But just as ambivalent as the character of our “lovable” and “tasteful” Vicky is, so too is this scent.

On one hand, the name is completely misleading, as there is officially no amber contained. And the color green doesn’t really fit the known scheme at all.

But if a color suits this fragrance, then it is exactly this one. Amber reveals itself from the start with a brief, somewhat harsh mandarin note, which comes across stronger on paper than on my skin - at least on mine. Here and there, the slightly fruity-citrusy nuances come through, but rather subtly.

One can definitely perceive the dark, resinous-green undertones more strongly, which actually form the core of amber, enveloped by absolutely soft lavender wisps that give the impression of actually sniffing something warm and amber-like, yet are kept in check by the herbal-spicy to bitter labdanum.

Thus, the perfume oscillates between several contradictory facets such as sour-sweet, herbal-powdery, citrus-floral, and resinous-soft, which likely justifies its polarizing nature. Is there perhaps amber in there after all, as one somehow senses a soft complexity that seems to be countered by the listed ingredients?

So Amber may be as fascinating and equally repulsive with a tendency towards penetration as Vicky Pollard, just from the other end of the taste scale.

What a Shame
It sounded so lovely to me: green, invigorating, forest, but this scent just doesn't suit me at all, or I don't suit it.

The first impression on the paper strip was that of an intense room spray. Well, then it gets a second chance on the skin, but that turned out even worse. The lavender note comes across as unpleasantly artificial, yes, chemical, even if it should be real lavender absolute. And as if that weren't enough, the scent becomes musty and scratchy, decidedly unpleasant, almost toxic. Unfortunately, it clings very well, and not even the dry down becomes more harmonious.

Well, it would be strange if I always found all scents wonderful. My nose has its shortcomings too.

Enchanted Calm
Over the peaks there is calm
In all the treetops you feel
Barely a breath
The little birds are silent in the woods
Just wait, soon
You will rest too.

Goethe's "Wanderer's Night Song" comes to mind with this fragrance.

Anyone expecting a heavy sweet scent with this fragrance will be sorely disappointed, and I mean that in the truest sense of the word. This fragrance symbolizes for me a mystical forest with giant fir trees.

I find that the listed pyramid does not correspond with the fragrance. Lavender does not come through at all, and if mandarin has been used here, then it is the leaves.

The top note matches the color of the perfume. It is tart fruity and really green.

A true heart note does not develop for me. The base is what defines the scent for me. Here, amber has a truly extraordinary development of different nuances, which reveal themselves depending on the distance to the skin.

This amber has truly enchanted me. Although the composition is extremely idiosyncratic, it radiates a calm, like in the poem recited above. But somehow amber also has something enchanted about it, like in a fairy tale. I call it: "enchanted calm"

Igraine, thank you so much for the opportunity to test this extraordinary perfume.

Primeval Resin Hammer
What can I say? I haven't been so overwhelmed and taken away by a scent in a long time. Taken away to a prehistoric forest landscape, shrouded in veils of eternal smoke.
"Amber" by Aftelier is, in my opinion, not amber at all. At least not the sultry exotic amber. Perhaps a Nordic one. Very archaic, very imposing. Enchanted, but in a rough, dark, primal way and not whimsically cute.
Heavy resin is massive and can be smelled in thick, steady drops. Comforting and horrifically rough at the same time. The real thrill for me, however, is that something seems to smolder above the dark forest tone. To say "campfire" or "incense" would be too mundane, but it is definitely a hovering, morbid burning note. It is also what adds a strange sweetness to the whole. But everything is outside of ordinary categories. I don’t care about the bright notes that the pyramid promises individually. However, they could be partly responsible in small amounts for creating some of the impressions I described above. But one should not hope for the slightest sunny citrus shower here.
Anyone wanting to test this perfume must have a strong day. It gives a lot, but also has the power to knock you down quite mercilessly if you are not up to it. A perfume could not have more character.
Finally, I would like to thank Igraine, who even sent me a second sample after I lost the first one. Thank you very much, thank you very much! I recommend this scent to anyone looking to expand their collection with an autumnal rustic touch.

The green lavender at the start becomes softer & more pleasant. Labdanum prevents it from being too sweet and creates a slightly bitter counterpoint.

For me, the resinous labdanum stands out so much that I hardly notice the lavender. The scent has something to it, but it's too strong for me.

It rises lightly citrusy, enveloped in ethereal lavender, green, fresh & spicy. Rockrose resin warms and rounds it off harmoniously. Wonderful!

Strictly sweet amber on a lavender bed, woody sweet.
