Gaudi in Lederhosen
I urgently needed a break. The excesses of student life in the city were really getting to me. Moral decay, immorality, intoxication, excesses, and ecstasy, I had wallowed in them and enjoyed them to the fullest. But now, after two years, I simply needed distance; otherwise, I would break apart, that was certain.

So I went to the alpine pasture for half a year, nature, taking care of the animals, distance. Just me and my books and no distractions. The alpine pasture was dreamily situated on a plateau. A simple hut with a living kitchen, a small sleeping chamber, and the barn. I had five cows and a few chickens.
“Even a student from the city can manage this!” said the farmer as a farewell. (1)
“And watch out for Zenzi, she’s wild!” he called after me. (2)
I didn’t know what a Zenzi was. I didn’t think much of it. And yes, I would manage and enjoy it, that was my intention. The first step into the barn was, however, a shock: the stench of urine and animal dung hit me like a fist in the stomach. Along with the smell of the cows, I was momentarily stunned. But I managed to drive the animals to the meadow and clean out the barn without throwing up. A good start, I thought!
Later that day, I also learned what a Zenzi was. She was my neighbor from the alpine pasture, 100 meters higher up the slope. She came puffing and sweating down in all her fullness and greeted me more warmly than I found appropriate.
“So you’re the young man from the city, huh? Come here, let me have a look at you!” (3)
Unfortunately, she smelled a bit like the barn I had just cleaned out. I stepped back a few paces and was able to quickly end the conversation. However, she came by at least once every day, helped me with milking, cheese-making, and showed me many things I didn’t know about life on the alpine pasture. I was grateful to her but also felt that she sought my company a bit too much.
Then yesterday it happened. She came with a bottle of schnapps and wouldn’t take no for an answer when I said I was abstinent. Soon we were sitting at the kitchen table drinking.
“And how does my gentian taste?” (4)
At that point, I had to agree, even though or because it was already affecting me a bit.
“Come a bit closer, boy, you don’t need to be afraid, I won’t bite! Just a little, if you like!” (5)
Her barn smell was distinctly noticeable under the sweat. Animalistic and lustful, but it didn’t bother me as much anymore. She moved even closer to me. I could feel her steaming warmth.
“You can touch me a bit, boy, it won’t bother me!” (6)

After that, I remember nothing until I woke up in the chamber, half-buried by her powerful body. Her breath smelled sour from cheap wine and schnapps. Ashamed, I wanted to sneak away, but she woke up and said something like “You’re awake again, so let’s do it one more time” (7) and what happened next, I don’t want to talk about...

Now it’s getting light outside and she’s snoring loudly next to me. Just 5 more minutes and I’ll try to escape again. Back to the city, to the excesses that now seem to me like a harmless children’s song after this night.

----------------

The cow barn smell that has been described many times here is fortunately only present at the beginning of Oud Burmi. Dung, urine, slurry describes it quite well. Along with that, there’s also a sour-alcoholic note. It reminds me of stale wine and a hint of cheap cognac. The remnants of a party the next morning, or rather noon. A strong animalic scent is noticeable from the start and becomes even stronger over time. The smell of leather comes in, which I don’t find unpleasant at all. By this time, the slurry from the start has fortunately dissipated. A light smell of dark, rather rotten wood also adds to it. This is how it slowly fades away. The longevity is quite good, 7-8 hours. The silage has potential for annoyance in the first hour but then recedes a bit.
I don’t find Oud Burmi nearly as bad as some have described. However, that still doesn’t make it a good scent and definitely nothing I would want to wear or smell on someone.
I will bury the test strip as fertilizer in the flower bed in the garden; maybe that’s an alternative use for this scent...

Thanks to the funny dairymaid Gandix, who has absolutely nothing to do with this story!

Translations from Bavarian (provided by Google Ireland Limited):
(1) This is an easy task, even a delicate student from the city can handle it well.
(2) And watch out for Zenzi, she’s quite wild and impetuous.
(3) You must be the young man from the city, right? So come closer and let yourself be seen in the light!
(4) Don’t you find my spirit made from the roots of the mountain gentian, the most beautiful flower, indeed the epitome of the Alps, very tasty?
(5) You can come a bit closer, you handsome young man, I won’t bite! Maybe just nibble a little if you like it!
(6) You’re welcome to touch me sensually, you young god, I won’t resist!

Just to be safe, apply it by 5 PM
What? Oud Burmi smells like a cow stable? Nonsense. Do you have to understate it like that? Cow stable doesn’t even come close. Oud Burmi smells like a brief, typically sour-woody-leathery note right away, without detours through the barn, like a manure pile, like slurry. I wonder if I have ever experienced a more intense opening for a… uh… the term “perfume” just doesn’t fit… a liquid intended for application on the skin. Phew.

It takes a while, but it happens: Within about two hours, the slurry smell dissipates and makes way for a powerful, dark-spicy, almost tobacco-like oud wood. As the morning progresses, this note becomes brighter and brighter, even starting to shimmer (with an “r,” not an “l”). There’s hardly a trace of the stench left; Oud Burmi has become quite well-behaved - at least comparatively. In the afternoon, this development gently continues, becoming increasingly bright-woody, while still retaining a sour-leathery quality, and now the thought of a distant, barely noticeable breeze from the cow stable fits in. The latter is only noticeable very close to the skin, surely just for the wearer.

Oud Burmi is undoubtedly not a scent for the uninitiated, but it does become wearable - who would have thought that at first? Everything from start to finish can probably be summed up under the various facets of oud, so the simple mention of a single ingredient in this case seems not pretentious, but appropriate.

Conclusion: Anyone wanting to wear the scent in the evening should apply it by 6 PM at the latest. Just to be safe, already by 5 PM.

I would like to thank 0815abc for the sample.

Brilliantly Intentionally Failed???
Hello dear Parfumo community

A lot has already been written... discussed... and said about the scent of Al Waseef Oud Burmi.
It is certainly not really wearable.
Almost everyone agrees on that.

But I think every fragrance has its reason for existence.
Let's take a look at this beautifully failed masterpiece from a different perspective.

Who hasn’t experienced a supervisor at work who is a complete disaster in terms of leadership and/or expression? Maybe even looks terrible?!
Then you can subtly tell him how you feel about him with a nice gift. Of course, the fragrance should be praised beforehand. Give him the Burmi with the words, "It suits you. It reflects your character."

The 2-hour dental appointment can easily be reduced to three-quarters of an hour. How? Of course with Oud Burmi!

Business partnerships you want to end can surely be dissolved nicely with this. A nice card with the right lines...

I also believe that in a failed marriage, a lot can be said without many words. How?
With Oud Burmi.

I could still give many more examples...
Tax office, health insurance, neighborhood, etc...

So let’s celebrate the fragrance.
It also has its reason for existence!!!

Thanks to Al Waseef for this wonderful failed scent. You are really great.

Thanks for reading...

Bückware in Godesberg
Unexpectedly often comes, especially when strolling through the Christmas market. A stand with Arabic goods made of olive wood caught my attention, as I needed a new cooking spoon in a rather mundane way. Next to all the wooden items was a selection of flacons with very simple and inexpensive Arabic no-name scents for filling. I casually asked the seller if he knew where one could get a good Dehnal Oud. He initially seemed a bit puzzled, but suddenly pulled out a package from some hiding place and showed me the flacon: an Oud for spraying, in a heavy and very high-quality flacon. The special thing: at the bottom of the flacon, you can see a few Oud splinters!

Oud Burmi differs from the Indian Ouds for spraying that I know (e.g., the “Al Shams” by Ajmal). This “Burmese” variant seems somewhat less animalistic in comparison, somehow brighter and more pleasant. For European noses, this might be a good entry point.

The sensational price of about €25 / 100 ml allows for a blind purchase. I saw Oud Burmi online at Musk & More. We are certainly at the lower end of what one would still want to recommend in terms of price. The Oud is dissolved in plenty of alcohol, and thus the top note comes across as quite tipsy. But that fades quickly. After that, the typical woody warmth unfolds, which can feel so vibrant.

Certainly, no special fixatives have been used, and so one must accept what the so-called natural perfumery imposes with Oud Burmi: that there is only a gradual fading, but no consistent tension of the wood note throughout the top, heart, and base. This makes sensible dosing almost impossible: no matter how much you apply, fundamentally you have to reapply if you want the enjoyment to last. A small travel flacon for pants or handbag is certainly recommended.

However, whether Oud Burmi is pure nature, I cannot say with absolute certainty. After a while, about an hour, the harsher wood scent gives way to a somewhat rounder, sweet-honeyed, and mustier aspect, with distinct notes of leather. This could - but doesn’t have to - indicate subtle support from an artificial Oud base.

I really like the calm, unexcited character of this simple Oud spray. Lovers of beautiful, warm wood scents will surely have their hearts opened here!

In fact, Oud Burmi can be recommended to many. It would be a good reference scent for anyone who simply wants to experience how real Oud truly smells - in contrast to the synthetic fragrance cocktails that almost universally dominate the Western Oud wave. And there are worlds in between!

Then I think Oud Burmi is suitable for many types of layering. Together with the spicy Red Sea by Micallef, which I had applied earlier, it makes quite a good impression. I also think that a summery-citrusy Eau de Cologne could be well carried over into winter by the warmth of this wood. Oud Burmi is by no means as exclusive as an expensive wine that must not be mixed with anything else.

Oud Burmi shows that even the cheapest qualities of natural Oud have beauty and are already quite wearable - you just have to know where to get it!

whew!
On recommendation, I just filled my collection with the stock - and lastly took Oud Burmi in hand. Again and again: wow! As Apicus notes, "no matter how much you try to acclimate, in the end you have to add more if the enjoyment is to last." The advice of a hardcore user.
Well, this enjoyment, which undoubtedly clings to the scent, I had to work extremely hard for. Oud Burmi smells good to me - if I survive the first hour after application. I mean, colleague NuiWakakore has masterfully described the excellent comparison to the Alps - all I can think of is that if someone asked me how this Oud is, I usually resort to the following comparison: In the case of a bank robbery, instead of a .44 Magnum, it’s definitely better to have this Oud Burmi ready. A warning spray, and the bank employees even willingly fetch extra money from neighboring branches, just so you can leave quickly.
AFTER the first hour, the scent is OK, but how I manage that hour, I still don’t know - even after several attempts.
A conspiracy theory claims that what’s in the bottle isn’t agarwood chips, but wood after its natural journey through the eagle - but please, form your own judgment, the hero's fame will surely be yours ;-)

My dog loves it. He also prefers to "perfume" himself with cow dung and dead moles. Not for humans.

It smells a bit like this when the farmer has spread manure. Fresh country air mixes with the leather seats of the brand-new luxury car.

Good if: You want to sell a faux fur coat as a cowhide coat. Or if you want to pretend to be a farmer. (Uff, just came from the barn...)

The first minutes are manure-like, but then it becomes pleasantly woody. Not a revelation, slightly alcoholic, mid-range wood. Wearable.
