French Liquorice sticks to the T
Gigantic, what I thought was initially Myrrh, but then huge liquorice. It reminds me strongly of the French twigs in the market that are for chewing. It is like an olfactory photograph of them in sharp focus. The liquorice woodiness and sappy strands of sharp and natural liquorice. I would love to eat this.

As it dries down, I am transported to lying on my back on a haybale in mellow evening sunset and still chewing my now frayed and much more woody stick.

I really like this for the uncompromising and straightforward scent photo. It makes me want to go and buy one of these sticks and smell it side by side to this aroma. As a perfume, you are left in no prior doubt of this aroma in it's entirety if you have ever smelled one of these chewing sticks.

Hey, Hey Hay!...
Liquo goes on with an extremely natural smelling dark licorice sole focus. As the composition moves to its early heart the natural smelling dark licorice adds a touch of tonka bean derived sweetness as the licorice gains a rich texture with underlying hay-like coumarin support. As time passes the licorice gradually swaps places with the hay-like coumarin, now taking its place as star as the initial sweetness gradually recedes. During the late dry-down the licorice significantly dissipates, revealing relatively transparent vetiver in the base taking on a co-starring role to the diminished but still significant coumarin through the finish. Projection is average, as is longevity at between 8-10 hours on skin.

Liquo is the kind of composition that doesn't trick the wearer with a whole bunch of twists and turns; it starts immediately with the finest natural smelling licorice note I have encountered to date, only gradually adding the hay-like coumarin to the mix for the most part. On the one hand the relatively linear, minimalist structure may not wow folks in and of itself, but gosh, the licorice when mixed with a bit of the tonka bean sweetness from the base is so lifelike it conjures up real black licorice candy with the copious amount of hay-like coumarin adding an innovative extra twist. There really isn't much else to say, as the composition is pretty much hay and licorice all the way (with one or the other as the driving force throughout). I have never been a huge licorice fan, but if I were this would be a mandatory purchase as one won't find a better representation of the stuff anywhere else in the perfume world, at least not in any compositions I've tried to date. The bottom line is Liquo doesn't have a lot going on, but fine ingredient quality mixed with deft execution makes for a big winner, earning it an "excellent" 4 stars out of 5 rating and a huge recommendation to licorice (and/or hay) fans everywhere.

Licorice & hay
Holy grail stuff for any licorice-hay lover. Liquo opens with an extremely vibrant, realistic, darkish smell of licorice sticks, wet hay under a cloudy sky (think of the hay note in Heeley’s Cuir Pleine Fleur... just in 3-D full power), anise, a ton of dusty and sharp cumin, woody notes, with a gentle touch of lavender and powdery flowers. Mediterranean to the bone, a thick blend transporting you right into a small village’s fair, blending the smell of home-made, non-sweet – rather salty on the contrary – licorice and anise candies with earthy whiffs of barn smells from farms and fields – hay, woods, herbs. That’s it, and it’s terribly good for me. The notes smell raw and realistic, but the blend is extremely refined, crisp, “polished” in a good way; so don’t expect anything overly “hippie and artisanal”. It surely smells natural and almost organic to some extent, and surely shows an artisanal touch – especially that fantastic note of hay – but overall it’s all tamed down and mastered enough to appear as a proper work of high class perfumery. A win-win compromise, shortly: wild and sophisticated. Also, don’t expect any gourmand scent: too earthy and realistic for that. Quite dark too, or better say with a palpable sort of “rainy” feel... ever been to the countryside after a storm? That’s the smell. Peaceful, but almost unsettling, with a soothing, drier and dusty-smoky drydown. A velvety somber perfume managing to smell extremely elegant and enjoyable yet “uncivilised” and moody, with some “gothic” vibe underneath – a “rural” kind of gothic deeply rooted in the elusive quiet of the Mediterranean countryside. Great materials as far as I can tell. Solid and evocative.

Absinthe and tonka is what I get. It's warm, syrupy, and slightly bitter on my skin. It's lingering effects are very sweet and nutty.

A dose of cough medicine (not unpleasant) before liquorice/anise perfection. Hay and tonka compliment. Not to be missed, liquorice lovers!
