“Controversially rated” Renaissance
When I see someone give 0s to a scent across the board, that’s how I can tell they didn’t take the time to actually even try it. Sure, you can dislike the scent, but to lie and say the performance is bad (longevity and sillage) is not actually doing anything to help people get a good idea of the experience with this scent. Do yourself a favor and look at the breakdown of the ratings for each factor and you’ll see what I mean.

Being a Beyoncé fan, I was surprised and excited to hear that she was going to come out with a new fragrance. The only one of hers I ever experienced was with her Heat line, which my mom dabbled in a little when I was I young girl. So when this was being dropped, I was eager to try it solely based on the packaging. But when I saw the notes, I got even more excited.

Cé Noir is a sweet floral scent with an *intense* combination of myrrh & honey. It can definitely be a lot, but as the florals and pop of clementine come in, the scent softens a lot. Some have compared it to Delina and I guess I could see the relation especially with the rose in the heart. It’s pretty resinous with an animalic honey, so I fully understand why those who have not experienced myrrh would not take a liking to this. But I find it to be very beautiful and wearable, in the cool and warm weather. It’s very long lasting and has a strong projection (gotta be light handed with it)! I think with this release, Bey is redefining herself in a way that speaks for itself. Not everyone is going to understand or agree with her, but she’ll be sure to show out, and I think this fragrance is an excellent representation of her “rebirth” or new era.

I’m excited for Bey’s new scent to come out. I know a lot of people LOVE to hate on her, and that could be why you see some of those ratings. Don’t listen to the trolls who have nothing but dust to contribute and give it a try for yourself. You may be surprised.

Beautiful in the cold, breathtaking in the heat
Beyoncé made a mistake releasing this in the northern-hemisphere cold seasons.

I tested this first on a crisp fall day, and the scent was... pretty. The clementine at the top was evident, even if after a while what was left of it was the juiciness it contributes, but without its aroma. The honey is an evergreen, providing a sticky texture throughout that was welcome, but could at times become a bit sharp. The jasmine and the myrrh take center stage about a half-hour after spraying, sometimes jostling for attention and other times entering into an uneasy harmony. The amber is there, beautiful and pleasant, attempting sometimes unsuccessfully to create peace. I sprayed conservatively that day, I never became anosmic to the fragrance, but after a while it did settle and stayed close to my skin.

A few weeks later I tried this elsewhere, on a warm, humid day, and the fragrance literally SINGS (no pun intended). The scent becomes vibrant, bewitching, and elegant, but still playful (perhaps finally commanding the reputation of the woman who curated it). I don't want to call it linear, but it's amazing how you can feel the influence of almost every note (even the citrus opener!) through to the very end. The clementine is sweet and bright at the start, but instead of fully fading away, you can feel it here and there throughout the heart and some of the drydown, injecting a very slight, interesting citrus kick to the composition. The jasmine becomes belle of the ball, dancing beautifully with every note from start to finish. The honey melts into the amber to create a dark, seductive foil to the lighter, still persistent notes. The fragrance is no beast, but it does succeed in creating a nice scent bubble around you.

I was very resistant to the idea that some fragrances shouldn't be worn during certain seasons until Cé Noir. Now I understand that it's not about what you will smell like to other people or whether certain notes don't "match" a certain season, it can very much be about how the fragrance will behave.

This northern Summer 2024, with Cé Noir, I fear I'll be unstoppable.

Very beautiful, expressive scent. Scandal paired with Delina. Unfortunately, it gives me a headache.
