A Composition Smoked By Smoky Amber...
Ryder goes on with a moderately sweet smoky amber and pipe tobacco-like accord. Moving to the early heart, the composition stays relatively linear, as moderately sweet smoky amber grows in strength, becoming sole star, with the supporting pipe tobacco taking on a slightly booze-laden cola aspect while adding a natural cedar wood undertone. During the late dry-down the amber all but vacates with its remnants turning relatively dry, as slightly powdery vanilla and faint jasmine join-in, over a dry, stark natural woody base. Projection is excellent, as is longevity at around 15 hours on skin.

Ex Idolo's first offering, Thirty-Three, was a surprisingly superb outing from relative rookie perfumer Matthew Zhuk. After being wowed enough by Mr. Zhuk's first composition, obviously his second, Ryder, merited a sniff tout de suite. Having given the new offering several full wearings on skin it is time to see how Mr. Zhuk fared on attempt two for his house. The short early answer is "OK"... Smoky amber seems to be all the rage nowadays, and it seems like only yesterday I was wowed with Tango by Masque and many others of lesser quality. Here, Mr. Zhuk pairs the smoky amber (that smells not unlike relatively sweet smoldering wood to a large degree) with a not quite believable supporting pipe tobacco accord that actually smells more like cola syrup (or at least as a significant component of the accord). More believable are the natural deep cedar-like woods, conjuring up the planks used at a tobacconist shop or maybe even a humidor. The whole thing has been done before, but the cola is something relatively new, and the execution by Zhuk is excellent. The problem, aside from the lack of innovation, is the smoky amber is just a bit too much. It initially impresses, but as time passes it gnaws away at your senses, wearing out its welcome in relative short order. The gentle powdery vanilla and vague woods in the base are a pleasant but mundane affair; welcome to a degree after the smoky amber onslaught, but ultimately meriting a shoulder shrug. The bottom line is the $185 per 50ml Ryder is the kind of composition that impresses early, but as time passes and on future wearings when one looks beyond the initial polish on further reflection really is nothing new, earning an above average 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5 and a neutral recommendation with a positive bias. If one is looking for a smoky amber composition, Tango by Masque is a superior offering outright, while also providing a bit better bang for the buck.

Pine starts with P
Vanilla and wood, a hint of smoke. But sour pine lingers in the background, and sticks around. The sourness could be my skin, you may have different results. I like it, but others have also said the sourness is unpleasant in this one. You might read it as fresh or bright, or the other direction that pines can go which can be quite unpleasant.

Chinatown
Now I was here, even though I didn't want to at first. A business trip to New York for training. This evening fell under "leisure." Our tour guide had promised us something very "relaxing" for this special night. We found ourselves in Manhattan's Chinatown. It was a lounge called -The Jasmine-Dragon- a very trendy nightclub. Without a personal recommendation, there was no entry! The lounge was run by a beautiful Asian woman named...Miss Zuì.

-You take...it is a gift from the house. They make very, very beautiful dreams. You can trust me!-. Those were the words of Miss Zuì as she handed me this steaming pipe...it was an opium pipe. The reason why everyone here was so...relaxed...!
OK! Curiosity won. I took the first puff from the pipe and waited to see what would happen to me. Lift-off!

I felt heavy, very heavy. Everything around me sank into the thick smoke of the pipe. The movements of the other guests slowed down, including Miss Zuì's. The first puff from the pipe tasted woody-bitter with a slight undertone of gasoline-like accords. Puff by puff, my body became heavier and heavier. A very pleasant warmth overtook me. It felt as if my limbs were being drenched in hot resins. I had the feeling my skin was beginning to glow golden and amber, like the air around me. Sweet and spicy was the tobacco flavor on my tongue and in the air. In slow motion, Miss Zuì walked past me. On the bare back of her low-cut and backless dress was a huge dragon tattooed, adorned with jasmine flowers. She turned to me and looked over her shoulder with a wink. But what was that? It seemed as if all the jasmine flowers on her back were slowly opening one by one and filling the room with their scent. Even the dragon twisted in gentle movements on her skin. How beautiful!

The next morning, I woke up in my hotel room. My clothes still smelled woody-spicy like smoke. On my pillow next to me lay a dictionary with Chinese translations. One page was marked. I opened it and read......Zuì...is the meaning of...intoxication!

Ryder is an intoxication. A sweet-spicy incense and amber intoxication. Warm and soft like a second skin made of warm resins, it envelops the soul and body. It is like a liquid suggestion of beautiful thoughts and feelings. Strong and numbing at first but always softer and more fluid in transition to its notes and accords. A scent to feel good with oneself or with anyone else. A beautiful feeling for everyone. Whether woman or man.
Ryder is good for both. A wonderfully fragrant narcotic. I am intoxicated!

By the way, the story is entirely fictional. Or does anyone really believe that I know how an opium pipe works or smells?
I...never!

I revise!
After being completely captivated by Thirty Three from Ex Idolo and nearly having my olfactory quality standards raised, I was, of course, particularly curious about Ryder. However, I was somewhat disillusioned and am now writing this comment for the second time because I encountered the same mistake with Ryder as I have with several other fragrances. I tested this particularly noble drop with great care and sparingly. For example, I found the Oud from Maison Mona di Orio to be dreamy during cautious testing, but when worn extensively, floral notes that I had hardly noticed before became annoying. I recently found the Aramis Calligraphy Rose even more beautiful when worn extensively; small nuances that previously stood out seemed harmoniously integrated. Everything felt much rounder and more harmonious. I feel similarly about Ryder.

I compared it to fragrances like Ambre Orient or Chergui, but as beautiful as those are, in retrospect it feels like comparing gas station brandy to an ancient, vanilla-woody brandy.

The previous statements had already raised certain concerns in me before the first test. If I am correctly informed, the special and exclusive aspect of Ryder is supposed to be the Omani frankincense, but "creamy smoky amber scent," "reminds of Ambre Loup," or "very amber-heavy" led me to the impression that the amber accord overshadows the fine aspects of frankincense.

Fortunately, I still find the frankincense note pleasantly prominent. Ryder indeed roughly heads in the direction of Chergui or Ambre Orient, but even when you spray the fragrance, the difference becomes clear. Ryder is incredibly oily, almost honey-like, and appears so diluted with alcohol that it can be sprayed. This is also the case with Thirty Three and makes it clear that it is not advisable to spray the fragrances on light clothing. The sillage is indeed long-lasting and distinct, but not overwhelming; the longevity, however, is enormous. Typical attributes of a good extrait. The texture also again reminds me of high-quality brandy, as it clings oily to the glass and caresses the palate with velvet. And olfactorily, one is similarly spoiled, which I am only now truly realizing. A bright and noble frankincense is permanently present, but here it is presented through a honey-like-woody amber in an almost infinitely smooth nobility that is unparalleled. Of course, the combination of frankincense and amber can also be found in the aforementioned comparison fragrances, but there certain spice notes bother me; they seem less harmonious and noble - it is a completely different class.

Ryder permanently sparkles a bit through the wonderful frankincense, but in the overall picture, it appears woody-velvety-sweet, with hints of bitter forest honey and vanilla. The comparison with good brandy fits again. Despite all the velvetiness and softness, I perceive Ryder as rather masculine. A fragrance with a lot of character that probably invites many to cuddle.

What bothers me a bit is that these wonderfully harmonious-soft nuances also soften many ethereal and sparkling aspects of the frankincense, making it harder for me to assess its full quality and beauty. I find this better realized in rather unsweet-crackling fragrances like Black Cube, even if I appreciate Ryder as a whole work more. But it is similar with the oud in Thirty Three, which seems to be processed rather diffusely.

When considering the Ex Idolos as a whole work and testing them thoroughly enough to perceive all facets in full harmony, both fragrances from the label set absolute quality standards.

It's a shame that the bottle looks cheaper than that of some 1€ bargain store perfume, and the renewed test of Ryder could throw my financial planning quite off balance - considering the price per ML of over 4€. However, the yield is superb.

My Amber No. 37
.
Ryder - Ex Idolo

.
I'm going into the moor!
.
Consumed by passion and guilty on the bank account. Amber-laden. And I see: No beginning, only end. The last thoughts drift over the brown moor. Over the green unfathomable depths, the dark circles, and again and again the oily brown. Thick and syrupy, Caribbean, opulent, oppressive, cuddly and quiet and still, devouring. The moor.
.
My last comfort, one last time: Smell Ryder! And die!
.
Ryder. A powerful elixir, a mysterious green for you. Mud. A slight animalistic thrum, under bushes with jasmine and stink. You step on resinous woods, you circle the moor, you tread on creamy dark amber, you brush the heavy dew from the tobacco leaves and the sweet honey scent from green branches. Everything is so heavy. Amber full. Amber heavy and incense billows like steam from the cracks. Minute by minute. Step by step. Round the moor. The circle has closed.
.
And? Have you found yourself?
.
Velvety memories. Soothing. Thoughtful. Cuddly. Sticky kind of sex. Or. Smoking a pipe. And. Spanish brandy in the twilight. Or. Greek Metaxa. And. Cognac XO as a revelation. Or. Floating kind of sex. The guy gets lively. Saved.
.
Call the bank. Extend the credit. Buy Ryder. Thank Can.
.
Live.

Beautiful, durable, classic amber, slightly on the darker side. Perhaps the name: but there is a connection with a ride in a fall forest

A slightly smoky, yet sweet and creamy spicy-resinous Winter fragrance, balanced by a gentle dusty woody base. Rather linear. 100% Unisex!

That was a test of joy. An amber that is good just as it is. Not too little, not too much. It's heavy and very long-lasting. Really great.
