Speechless...
The fragrance I didn’t know I was searching for... The fragrance for which there’s no need to weigh how many stars it deserves... The fragrance that evokes memories I cannot fathom, and feels as familiar as a friend... The fragrance that leaves me speechless... has almost found its way to me on its own!
That it comes from a Scottish perfume manufacturer, supposedly the smallest in the world, is as astonishing as it is logical given my equally unfounded affinity for British style. On the website of "Castle Forbes," alongside hints about the best fishing spots and monolithic stone circles, there is also a modest button labeled "Perfumery." Clicking it reveals no portfolio, nor is there an online shop. If you want more information about the "Castle Forbes Collection," you need to be proficient enough in English to write an email to Lady Forbes.
With so much British understatement, it’s no surprise that “Special Reserve Vetiver” needed a bit of help to find its way to me. That assistance came in the form of a very attentive, wonderful perfume saleswoman from a private perfumery in Aachen, to whom I cannot be grateful enough for placing this ugly little bottle in front of me on the glass counter.
“Special Reserve Vetiver” is my personal fragrance experience that overshadows everything I’ve encountered so far. Ying and Yang. Heaven and Earth. Alpha and Omega.
"Or Bla and Blub," you might say. Because what does my enthusiasm help you in assessing whether it interests you too!? Well, perhaps more relevant to you is that after a somewhat citrusy and awkward start, it convinces within a few minutes with a fantastic integration of all the ingredients, where no note stands out. Warm wood and warm green create a wonderfully deep, character-rich mélange that simply leaves me sitting silently with glassy eyes. ("What's wrong with you?" the landlady asked concernedly upon first contact.)
The sillage has a pleasant presence, and the longevity is in the good middle range. A fragrance as cleanly crafted as the water of a Scottish mountain stream and yet as distinctive as the rocks of the Highlands shaped by rain and salty wind. A fragrance for seasoned men in kilts - and of course for landlords ;-)
