A spicy afternoon in Cape Town, South Africa
I first heard of Rooibos tea from an old coworker of mine, Annemarie, who was a sweet South African girl of Dutch descent. She would often bring “red tea” bags to work and share it with everyone. So it’s safe to say this scent has some nostalgia for me.
I’m shocked to read some did not find the rooibos note to be authentic here, because it feels very realistic to me. It’s not a common tea note, and it’s one you cannot really compare to any other type of tea note. It’s apart of the broom plant family (pollen-y yellow floral), and has a sweet-spicy duality to it similar to tobacco. African Rooibos is spicy-woody, and spiced up even more with all the cardamom and pepper. I don’t get much of the orris butter, but a note I do pick up on and wasn’t expecting to, is the immortelle. The immortelle, along with the tonka bean, give the scent a soft sweetness (sans powder thankfully), and really give the scent a natural “honey in tea” vibe. I also love the dash of smokiness here and I think it pairs well with the aromatic tea and spices. It makes me want to hop on a plane and go visit the red bush farms in the Western Cape of SA.
This is one of those scents that was a love at first sniff for me. I don’t have a ton of tea scents in my collection, and I do think this one is really a standout. It’s probably too much for spring / summer, but I’m a spicy bitch that likes to smell spicy even in the heat lol. And as bonus, it’s Black owned. I know that may not mean much to many, but it means a lot to me being able to support a brand that gives directly back to our community. Excellent fragrance, made by an excellent perfumer, that highlights a beauty of South Africa.
