Interesting Facts
Hardly anyone today knows that Dana was originally a Spanish company. And yet it is.
The art director of Myrurgia, Javier Serra, wanted to own his own perfume company and founded Dana in Barcelona in 1932. The name Dana is based on Javier Serra's interest in history and mythology.
He was friends with Jean Carles, who also created the Dana perfumes "Tabu" (1932) - the first great success of an oriental fragrance with accords of cloves and patchouli -, "Canoë" (1935) and "Emir" (1936).
Other fragrances included "20 Ks / 20 Carats / 20 Quilates" (1933), "Platino" (1934), "Boléro" (1936) and "Voodoo" (1950).
Neither the Civil War in Spain nor the Second World War could seriously harm the company. In 1955, Dana had 29 factories and employed 3,000 people worldwide. "Canoë" was among the most popular perfumes in Europe around 1959.
Today, Dana is an American company and is part of the Dimeling, Schreiber and Park investment group. It was founded in 1999 as Dana Classics Fragrances after acquiring the trademark rights from the bankrupt Renaissance Cosmetics.
Still successfully produced and sold are "Tabu", "Canoë" and "Ambush". As can be read on the company's own website danaclassics.com, "20 Ks / 20 Carats / 20 Quilates" will also soon be reissued, initially in a limited edition.
In addition, fragrances from other former perfume houses are now produced and sold by Dana Classics Fragrances. These include, for example, "Black Lace", "Chantilly", Rubinstein's legendary "Heaven Sent", Corday's "Toujours Moi" and fragrances from Houbigant, such as "Raffinée", "Demi Jour", "Le Jardin" and others.
