Big hair, shoulder pads
I have a fond spot in my heart for this big, busy 1980s floriental. It starts off with a spicy kick and lasts and lasts, with a nice vanillic drydown. Unfortunately, however, this perfume has been cheapened mightily in its more recent formulations, so it's only worth buying in vintage ones, pre-Dana, when it was made by Houbigant and Parfums Parlux. The bottle pictured here is the one to avoid.

Refinement with Cinnamon and Clove
The next autumn is definitely on its way! And if it’s not cool enough, at least there are prospects for winter.
The starker season, where everything gathers strength for the next spring / the next summer.
Sparse in warm colors and fragrant flowers. Time for spices.
Those who enjoy a bit of warm variety will reach for a spicy-oriental fragrance with some finesse. For example, this one.
As rotor orange as the liquid in the bottle is the scent. Powdery and "sandpapery," at times sandy-rough and floral-spicy,
It is "Hot Stuff" of a special kind. A warmth like charcoal embers in the fireplace. Without really being "woody." Just a hint of spicy bark, spicy leaves. The clove is very dominant. It stands in no contrast to the cinnamon; rather, it complements it into a very refined and sophisticated scent melody. Slightly demanding, delicately floral-sweet through orange blossom. In the background, like a fine, light orange veil. Matching the color of the cinnamon and that of the cloves.

It was the dog biscuit, not the scent...
Recently, I saw an almost empty bottle of Raffinée by Dana at a street flea market and took a sniff. I had owned this scent for a short time, and this little incident came to mind.

Many years ago, I was standing in a tiny photo shop (that was the time when you still had to develop films and didn’t know how the photos turned out or what was on the film - it was more exciting than a blind purchase), and next to me in line was a Newfoundland with its owner. The dog leaned trustingly and quite heavily against my legs and let me pet it. The owner pulled him back, embarrassed. “No, let him, I like dogs.” Finally, it was my turn when I suddenly felt a gentle tug downwards. The Newfoundland had stealthily stuck his snout into my large coat pocket and was excitedly trying to get to the bottom of the pocket. Now the owner was flabbergasted, “He never does that, he’s well-trained.” Then I remembered that there was a dog biscuit at the very bottom of the deep coat pocket. I explained to the owner and the line, pulled out the treat, and with one gulp, it was gone. The owner chuckled and said, “You smell so great, I actually thought Benny was out of control because of that.”

The scent was Raffinée by Dana; a colleague had given me a leftover bottle to make me appreciate orientals. Raffinée is a warm-spicy floral oriental, consisting 1. of clove, 2. of cinnamon, 3. of clove, 4. of cinnamon…. There’s also a hint of fruit, perhaps plum, but I can’t pinpoint the type for sure. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s all about the dosage. The scent is warm-spicy, powdery, and pure femininity; if it were a metal, it would be rose gold. At the same time, musk gives the scent a dry freshness, preventing it - with a moderate dosage - from ever becoming cloying or sticky. The sweetness is moderate, and the longevity and sillage are strong. Raffinée plays in the league of Scherrer 2 or Cinnabar, although I remember the latter as being much “heavier” (i.e., denser) and less wearable. Whether Raffinée still smells like this today, I unfortunately do not know. It didn’t accompany me for long; my preference back then was more for the rugged and fresh chypres. It’s not for men - oh, I already said, pure femininity.

P.S. I know there’s garden clove in it, but to me, it smells more like spice clove.

My Little Soul Comforter
Has no one done it yet? Fine, then I will!

Raffineè by Dana, it was previously represented by Houbigant until the formula, along with some other forgotten treasures in Europe, disappeared into the USA. Raffineè is therefore quite difficult to track down, so good luck to those who can manage the overseas connections and in return can supply cans of bratwurst and real gummy bears.

Raffineè starts bright and floral like a bell chime with bergamot and clove, an enormous dose of powder. This powder will carry through the entire scent journey. Quickly, cinnamon joins in, and now we already have a harmonious duet. Those who like Mitsouko will also appreciate this one. In the heart, a strong floral bouquet unfolds, with no single flower taking center stage, as iris and tonka underpin it with a fine dust. The dark note of ylang brings a restrained sweetness. Orange oil is the guiding thread of the heart, connecting the floral crown. This floral accord as a whole, combined with the cinnamon, is incredibly calming and soothing.

The base is just as complex with spices in fine dosage, an unsweetened vanilla, a bright note of vetiver, and a soft cool incense. Earthy tones are absent, and I don't miss them here. Instead, there is a fir forest green background that has formed in the base. Thus, Raffineè results in a perfect harmonious triad that makes one vibrate.

The fragrance pyramid mentioned above is by no means complete. In its radiant brightness, it repeatedly reminds one of Apres L`ondee or L`Origan, albeit several decibels louder and not so restrained, but with the same elegance. It is a stunner that can quickly become overwhelming, so 2 or 3 sprays are sufficient; otherwise, you risk becoming an olfactory grand event and, in doubt, a candidate for a headache. This is a characteristic that many American fragrances exhibit, and it also applies to longevity. 8 or 9 hours is the minimum.

The gentle side is that 2 sprays on a dreary day and you feel like a queen, so radiant. A flatterer on the sofa that you enjoy lingering on. While some other fragrances of this caliber carry a sense of nostalgia and drama, Raffineè has confidence on its side. My "Everything will be alright" fragrance.

Somehow it sounds like Balahé, but this one is rougher. Old-fashioned, rich, clove, cinnamon, a punchy base. Also heavily reformulated.

More warm-floral and lush than oriental-spicy. Feminine, mature, calm. She knows what's good for you. Surrender to her trustfully.

Floriental with warm spices, garden clove + bright orange blossom. Cinnamon is the star. Lots of powder + a light sweetness. Nice, but a bit too old-fashioned for me.

The scent is now produced by Prism Parfums. Unfortunately, it’s just a shadow of its former self.

Opulent, heavy oriental -
it carries the felt heat of 45°C.
If you love cinnamon, this is for you.
It envelops and lasts long!
