Geranium with a Lavender Twist and a Pinch of Patchouli
I picked up a few of these Demeter Vintage Naturals 2009 limited edition perfumes a couple of years ago, curious about the quality of perfumes produced using 100% natural essential oils, and I was pleased. The compositions are not complex, but they are well-balanced, and I find them as good as many niche perfumes.
Now we have arrived at 2012, and I am happy to be able to report that this Geranium perfume has not degraded over the three years since it was produced. Part of the concept of these perfumes was that they would, like fine vintage wines, evolve over time. I'm not actually convinced that much evolution has occurred in this case, but since I liked this combination of rose geranium spiced up with lavender and spiked with patchouli in the first place, I am happy that it has not changed!
In a comparison today of Vintage Naturals 2009 Geranium with Frédéric Malle Géranium pour Monsieur, I discovered that I actually prefer the Demeter, blasphemy of all blasphemy. I also find this composition to be more masculine (albeit still unisex) than the Malle, which seems to my nose "feminized", as it were, by the marked minty note.
All of this is unlikely to be of much help to anyone, since Vintage Naturals 2009 Geranium was a one-time production of 25,000 bottles, but I can at least report here that, if properly cared for, these essential oil-based perfumes can indeed survive in good shape for at least three years' time!
