A Night in New Muff City
After yesterday's Vetiver scent from Dueto offered absolutely nothing to be torn apart, and Golden Boy even less, I somehow hoped that City Oud would at least fail today. But no, it also has a beautiful drydown at Montale level, enough not to be rated poorly.
The scent starts off intrusive, powdery, chaotic, and does almost everything wrong that a fragrance can do. It is downright a stinker. The saffron here is extremely clinical and annoying, combined with a mix of musty oud and synthetic plastic/rubber notes. One shakes their head, having smelled all of this so much better before. Even rose and especially cinnamon save less than they destroy here - everything feels poorly intertwined, stressful, and reminiscent of molecular chaos. I never thought that cinnamon could harm a fragrance so much, but here, next to the saffron, everything gets muddled and confused. A powdery-dark jumble. Slowly, the city oud calms down, even becoming really nice towards the end. The symbiosis with the patchouli, for example, reminds one of Montale's Aoud Musk and truly of balsamic chocolate. What a high-quality, heavenly finish for a start lacking class and concept!
Bottle: rather poor than good.
Sillage: powdery oud with musty-sweet nuances - it sounds not only striking, but is also quite expansive.
Longevity: the drydown lingers and lingers and lingers... Over 11 hours!
If it weren't for the chocolate-oud drydown, City Oud wouldn't be worth mentioning even for urban oud junkies... But maybe it is!?
