Honey from the Hive
For years and years now I've been searching for a true honey fragrance. My desire for such a perfume began back when I was a teenager, but no matter what I'd smell in store or order samples of online, nothing ever truly satisfied the need for something that evoked the feeling of smelling honey straight from a bear-shaped plastic bottle.
That is, until my partner encouraged me to splurge on a blind buy of this limited perfume oil that I just so happened to spot very shortly before it sold out.
Feral Hive is everything I'd ever hoped for in a honey fragrance. It isn't merely honey-focused, it embodies honey itself - sweet, sticky and animalic, with subtle floral undertones. It's straight forward, but not boring or overly linear and wears beautifully on the skin.
When first applying, the animalic undertones of Feral Hive are the most noticeable. At this stage, it is rich and heavy (but not overly heavy to a point where it may induce nausea) and certainly more concentrated and animalic than real honey, at times moving into an almost caramelized hay-like direction. This is the point where Feral Hive's sillage is at it's strongest - however, due to the nature of perfume oils, it isn't overly perceptible to others even now.
Within the hour, Feral Hive has pressed past the animalic stage and revealed the true honey experience that lies at its core. Sweet and sticky, yet surprisingly light and wearable. Beautifully but subtly floral, and almost intoxicating. It is a beautiful honey fragrance I'd be comfortable wearing even in the summer, as despite its sweetness, it is never too heavy or overpoweringly cloying (and I am rather sensitive to overly sweet fragrance in the summer months).
Longevity is rather good, particularly for a perfume oil. Even eight hours after applying it to my skin, I can still perceive notes of honey and wild flowers, albeit significantly softer at this stage. Sillage is modest, and at its strongest in its more animalic early stage than later on. Personally, I adore using Feral Hive for layering, as it provides a beautiful, sweet base of honey for soft, nature-like fragrances that may lack some sweetness on their own, but even on its own, it is a beautiful experience.
Unfortunately, Feral Hive was a limited release for the June 2025 new moon, but For Strange Women has brought back previous new moon offerings in the past - and I am hopeful that Feral Hive may return at some point in the future.
