Not quite Pretty woman...
Remember when Julia Roberts went shopping in Pretty Woman? Not the first time, when they were mean to her, but the next day, after Edward helps her get started. She walks happily down the street, smiling, her hands full of shopping bags from expensive boutiques. She's wearing an elegant, white button-down dress and a black hat, looking ever so stylish and beautiful. I have no idea what perfume she's wearing, but it's definitely not this one.
Now, imagine another woman walking down the same street. She's got black stiletto heels, clickety-clacking confidently with a fast pace. She's wearing a tangerine-coloured suit, the jacket has a low-cut neckline and is trimmed with leopard fur, the skirt is thigh-high. She's got big, chunky gold clip-on ear-rings, red lipstick, black sunglasses and a hat that matches her suit; tangerine red with a leopard fur band. She's wealthy and is eager to show it, her outfit costs just as much or even more than anything Julia has just bought. But somehow, her glamour fails, and, at least next to the more clean-cut elegance of Julia, she ends up looking just flashy, even a bit tacky. THAT woman is wearing Beverly Hills.
Technically, Beverly Hills smells like Krizia's Teatro alla Scala (80s elegance) with a few drops of Estee Lauder's Youth Dew added (50s elegance). But together, it just feels too much. It does have a beautiful and very realistic cinnamon note, but the golden base is amplified by a civet note so heavy that it that ends up smelling almost urine-like. It feels like it's trying very hard to be an elegant and beautiful perfume, but, like the imagined tangerine lady, it doesn't quite get there. Too much, too loud, too intense... it screams HEY, NOTICE ME! - but not for the right reasons. I was never able to wear it, and sold my blind-bought bottle.
Still, it paints an interesting picture of a certain time and style, and makes me remember a specific kind of female characters in Hollywood movies from late 80s and early 90s - usually mean and snobby with too much make up - with a nostalgic smile.
