The rain at the edge of last night
There is the rain. It rushes on the roofs. It falls in torrents on the trees in the front garden. It washes the pollen from the lemon blossoms into the earthy bubbles above the ground. They wander over the old roots, washed out by the drifting clay at the edge of the smoking street, in the tracks of the cats, with bare narrow feet. Like Nola at the first floor window of the brownstone. The night glowing on. Eyes closed. Skin still warm orange blossom. Wild leathery tracks. From dark woods. Somewhere in there still disintegrating. Far into the approaching summer morning.

Gather Perfumes, based in Massachusetts, produces 100% natural fragrances. Ananda Wilson uses plant essences, extracts and oils that are either locally wildcrafted or organically grown. Even her animal components are "an olfactory alchemy of the botanical materials", as Ananda informed me upon inquiry. All the more astonishing is the long durability of the fragrances, which is probably due to Ananda's long experience and the virtuoso processing of the fragrances. She produces her fragrances in small batches, which are subject to natural seasonal fluctuations.
She collected the iris root for "Nola Neroli" in 2020, dried, concentrated and macerated it for at least four more years to obtain the rich, very moist and earthy extract for this fragrance. It forms the basis and the leitmotif, and is striking from the outset like the smell of rain in the loamy soil of a front garden in early summer. Neroli shimmers in it in almost minty-bright citrus notes, cool and green from branches, leaves and lemon blossoms. The musky, leathery notes of civet and castoreum act as rough, dirty animal counterparts at the heart. For me, they also create the image of cat tracks on rain-smoky, clay-washed road tar, which in turn is juxtaposed with orange blossom, expanding the spectrum with bitter-sweet, spicy, fruity-floral, warm aromas. Finally, the moist, earthy, woody-mossy-woody orris root notes remain. The rain on the edge of the summer night projects moderately over a few hours into the morning.
