The appeal of weirdness
The opening of this fragrance is weird. Leather and white florals in a very screechy and dissonant fashion. Very unusual. This opening lasts longer that you would expect an only very slowly deteriorates and transitions into something woody-resinous-anis-y. My description of the opening may come across as negative but it really is not. Granted, the opening is very weird but to me, it is not unpleasant at all. I think its originality is what makes it appealing to me as there really is no opening quite like it. And the drydown is absolutely lovely.

Buyers beware, this is no fragrance to blind-buy— it really isn’t for everyone— but try to sample or decant it and see for yourself if you like it.

An unusual release.
Alizarin has a spectacular opening, a stirring filtered-light effect, mildly cresolic narcissus (surprised others don't detect it) and an almost juicy mandarin orange with the note of mimosa soon after entering the scene. I've always felt that mimosa flower are deserving of more representation in fragrances other than those that are soft and feminine: here it shows what it can contribute to, of all things, a leather fragrance, with a plushness and winsome pastel-like radiance. It should definitely be featured in more unisex and masculine fragrances, along with the other flower that comes into play here: tuberose, which sustains its voluptuous presence into the base. There is also a somewhat mouth-watering dampness to the heart of the fragrance that is quite intriguing.

I have to say that this is a criminally overlooked Penhaligon's. It is substantive, has presence, and envelops the wearer, which is an anomaly for fragrances from this house where they are more a beautiful accessory than a profound wearing experience, and I say that lovingly, as I have six of their fragrances and love them all. Alizarin is layers and multitudes, though. The base, while not ground-breaking, is so well-blended and beautiful, I am more forgiving than some might be. I don't always need to be challenged from the very opening to the dry down; sometimes pleasure needs relief from unrelenting artistic challenge. Having an opening and heart that enters new territory is enough for me to applaud this beauty. I really love this.

Forest in the Luggage
Recently, the in-laws along with their husband invaded our humble cabin, and I had the feeling they had brought their homey Black Forest with them.

Woodsy notes spread out in the entrance, and upon greeting, it became clear that the couple smelled identical.

This was by no means too much of a good thing, as Alizarin conveys closeness and coziness.

It invites you to settle down and complements a refined conversation.
Yet its attitude remains British, - plush and cuddly it is rather not.

The aquatic mandarin ensures that the scent does not become too dense - and the floral components also remain discreet.
A light iris powder lingers in the air, mixed with transparent oud.
The leather is soft and supple - and the incense is noble but unsacral.
A scent fitting for the blue hour.

My nose swings from the gentleman to the lady - and finds it more harmonious on the brother-in-law.
In my opinion, it is rather a masculine scent - or for self-confident ladies when they appear solo.
In a duo, it will score points on the gentleman.

Nevertheless, I like the noble Brit with a slight oriental touch - although it also comes across better on my husband than on me.

But - one must also be able to indulge.

Piano, warm room, snow outside
This fragrance was introduced to me in my local perfumery last. Almost as a trump card, a real showstopper. As if the branch manager already knew that Alizarin perfectly matches my taste.

During the Christmas trial wear, I think of sitting in the leather armchair at my grandparents' house when I was just a little boy. I think of cold winter days, returning to the heated room, and clumsily tinkling on the piano.

The warm, woody, barely sharp scent sits so well in the nose that words can hardly describe it. For me, it's a feel-good fragrance for the weekend and the holidays, a bold scent for everyday wear.

Narrative Metamorphosis
I just swapped for this guy here. Of course, I immediately sprayed some on and took a whiff. But that was just the beginning....
Whatever my nose was "thinking," it initially created a swirl of various mints, a bit of citrus, and a hint of daffodil. The "mints" were predominant.
But the scent is far from over!.... So, I let my curious nose wait for 10 minutes, which is not so easy. But I managed. Then, a quarter of an hour later, I took another conscious sniff. The scent is gone! I thought... one second later... Another aroma had crept in. Powdery delicate flowers, yet strong in scent. Somewhere in the background of the "past," the "mint" still echoed. And in the fog of the immediate future, I could faintly sense something dark.
But if you were to walk around sniffing your wrist constantly, you wouldn't notice it at all. It's the stages that make the difference. And the scent from the "nose corner"...
Quietly and secretly, the "base" of the fragrance crystallizes beneath the mint powder flowers and "don’t touch me" emerges. Dark, smoky, woody-grassy. Like the smoldering of well-seasoned logs in the fireplace. Above, remnants of flowers, subtle. Below, "leathery" birch tar. And in between: A grassy steppe beyond a dense pine forest.
Where am I really? In a kaleidoscope, an "olfactory illusion," or in a mutable fragrance?
Probably in all three.....

This is special! Velvety leather combined with funky oud in a civilized way. That mandarin-narcissus combo in the opening is so good!

It's been a while since I found a scent from this brand that I like. Subtle daffodil notes, nicely fleshy tuberose, combined with leather and incense.

A feeling of minty freshness combined with leather, incense, and tuberose - not really my taste. But for those who like it..

Very bright leather due to mandarin, tuberose. Anyone who appreciates such refined, fine leather should test it. Not for fans of dark leather.

Starts fruity with a hint of freshness and floral notes, then deepens with subtle woods, a touch of leather, and incense. Beautiful scent!

Authentic leather scent with fruity freshness peeking through in the first hours. Later warm-woody-oudy-leathery. Distinctive!
