New Looks ... new Smells
1947 Paris, in fashion terms, must have been such an interesting place to be! Post WW2, the collection at Dior is heralded as a 'New Look' on the back of a quip by a reporter, while at Balenciaga the first fragrance from this house is released ... the inspiringly beautiful 'Le Dix'. The world of fashion is looking forward, and shedding it's wartime severity.

Does Le Dix smell old fashioned? Why yes ... in the same way that all great things from a time gone by do! Does it smell dated? Well ... not to my nose it doesn't. The difference between a perfume smelling 'dated' and 'old fashioned' ('it's the same thing' some will cry!) resides in its heritage as far as I am concerned. Some fragrances from as recent as the 90's smell 'dated' to me ... whereas Le Dix simply smells vintage, and classic. I'm lucky enough to be reviewing a vintage parfum, gleaned off the net at a very reasonable price.

It is unfathomable that Violet is not listed in any of the note pyramids I have seen, because there it is ... front and centre. I have a spotty track record with violet (a la Stephen Jones Millinery) ... but here in Le Dix it works a magic that is tantamount to ethereal. This fragrance carries a certain melancholy ... suitable to its intention as an 'evening' perfume. One can see it matched with a starkly elegant, architectural gown ... the hallmark of Balenciaga style. It smells like dusk in Autumn, when the last rays of a watery sun still carry enough warmth to slightly emblazon the clear, crisp air it has just vacated.
A floral aldehyde, it is difficult not to draw parallels with other famous fragrances of the same genre - many say that Le Dix is like no.5 with violets, and to a certain extent this is true. Le Dix is, however, in very good company ... Miss Dior is released in the same year, as is Balmain's Vent Vert.
The progression from slightly sharp Bergamot and Lemon in the top, to beautiful florals in the heart and on to a solid woodsy and slightly vanillic base is all crystallised by the aldehydes here ... doing their job of making this fragrance sparkle. I can't help but be reminded of a line from one of my favourite Eartha Kitt songs : " ... I like the old fashioned flowers, Violets are for me ... have them made in diamonds by the man at Tiffany ...".

So there it is ... sparkling violet diamonds ... herein lies the attraction of the beautiful, classic Le Dix by Balenciaga.

Grownup violet classic scent
There is no doubt that you are wearing a classic fragrance from the past upon spraying this revered Balenciaga creation on skin. Le Dix has that type of more complex glamour than the one we witness in the market lately and its olfactive signature, a floral chypre rich in aldehydes, is tipical of its era. Le Dix is apparently knonw for some as the 'Chanel No 5 with violets', which somehow does make sense, but for me it reminds me more in style to a Rochas creation a little bit earlier than it, Audace, because both has an aroma saturade in a violet of an aroma which is green, slightly plastic, sweet and powdery. The similarty with Chanel No 5 might be due the aldehidic intensity wherewith Le Dix opens. The aldehydes here has for me a slightly powdery aroma and they give me a very clean and brighimpression. After them Le Dix is dominated by the sober violet smell, more earthy and green than sweet as was aforementioned. I think it's interesting that in this moment i can already presence a tiny use of civet in this composition, giving it an animalic touch that doesn't make it dirty. Le Dix base is fantastic, switching between moments of a slightly mossy and dry woody aroma and moments where you notice a creaminess with incense nuances typical of a good mysore sandalwood or a good mysore sandalwood accord. Le Dix smells like grownup sophistication from the beginning until the end.

A creamy violet
Balenciaga’s first perfume from 1947… and what a first one! This scent is simply so beautiful. It is discreet but to the wearer it is the best companion you can have, especially on a rainy, grey day. If you like violets, that is. Because this scent has a really powerful violet note - all the way. You can also sense a soft, creamy expression underneath - that is when the aldehydes have faded - and this is probably the reason why I find it so great, since I am not always fond of violets as a single note. The drydown has a warm sandalwood note, just lovely and calming.
This is an old scent - not oldfashioned or outdated nor wornout. I find it charming with the right amount of the right notes. It could easily be produced and sold today - I would buy it and wear it. Fortunately, I have a full 50ml bottle on my shelf. Lucky me :)

Merci Monsieur Fabron
I had prepared myself for this fragrance. I already knew in advance that a bottling was on its way to me, a more than generous perfumer had sent it to me.

Freshly scrubbed skin, no other perfume nearby and now, the big moment: applied, waited, sniffed.

It is a revelation, a treasure that is now only available at unbelievably high prices, so elegantly fine, not at all noisy, pleasantly spicy and only slightly floral. You can tell that there are flowers in it, but I can't tell exactly which ones. I get an association with Ivoire by Balmain, although this one is more gently green.

It has a pleasantly soft, not at all like other chypre fragrances and it seems as if it lasts forever, because I've been smelling it for hours now, even though I've only used a relatively small amount as there is only one bottle. You want to have it for longer, right? ;-)

To summarize, it is a woody-powdery, spicy-fine, floral-soft fragrance that is second to none, a truly wonderful composition.

I am very happy to have received it and will wear it with great pleasure, always bearing in mind that it is a masterpiece. My big thanks to ElysaShades and your generosity.

timeless noblesse: An everlasting chypre fragrance
After seeing a rather large selection of "Le Dix Balenciaga" leather handbags for women in a second-hand vintage store, I looked again for leather in the fragrance of the same name; I couldn't remember it at all.

I found not the slightest trace in the eponymous creation, but an elegant floral chypre that once again shows the special care, the classic fragrance construction associated with the Balenciaga name.

Citrusy-spicy aldehyde showers invigorate the senses in the opening, juicy peach sweetness nestles velvety before spring and also "the white lilac blooms again"!
Somewhat old-fashioned, but beautiful, accompanied by lily of the valley and jasmine; both in innocent white, yet with just that hint of sensuality that maintains the elegance and light allure of the composition.
This rich bloom is stylishly accompanied by noble ripe roses and slender irises.
By omitting overly warm vanilla nuances, the base now develops in a slightly erotic-animalistic way with a creamy sandalwood accord. Vetiver, pleasantly dosed and appropriately smoky thanks to precious resins, before a light cap of tonka bean musk foam closes over the entire creation.
I would prefer not to part with it at all.

If I hadn't seen the "date of birth", I would have placed "Le Dix" at the height of the eighties.
With such foresight and timeless style, a fragrance garment has been woven here from classic fragrance notes; sometimes denser, sometimes more transparent, but always wearable and with that certain something: "An adornment for the lady!" would be a fitting advertisement for it.

Like many of these vintage chypre fragrances, "Le Dix" also needs time and space to develop; this fragrance is not a "team player", but is very aware of its own charisma and it lives it out!
Come, noble lady! Let's get dressed up! Because I think it's time we both went for a little stroll!
"Le Dix" is perfect for an afternoon stroll followed by a cocktail!

Received an old undated sample of this. To me it’s all powder. Mature, linear, boring.
