40 Love by Jean Desprez is a true masterpiece ahead of its time. This fragrance was created with a name that nods to tennis (40-Love). Full of a masculine interpretation of aldehyde, narcissus, carnation, and animalics one would initially think this may have been crafted for women. I’m still unsure if it was originally. To me, this is the founding father of things to come, vintage gems such as YSL Kouros. So ahead of its time, it was likely met with pause in 1947. Wearing it over time, it becomes like a second skin, ties into the tennis reference as heat hits you and the scent shines long after initial application. Strong, floral, animalic…stunning.
Almost impossible to find nowadays, if you can, I highly recommend not passing it by without a glance. If you enjoy 80’s animalic masculines, give this a try. Rogue Perfumery brought this back to life with its shortly lived 40 Rogue, which is a very close modern version that is equally as special. To the vintage fragrance hunter - look far, look wide, but keep looking. This one is well worth the search!
