A Flashback
This will be my second review. I usually don’t have the muse to write reviews because I lack the expertise to elaborate on the individual notes and their interplay. I leave that to the members with more knowledge.
I will only describe what this fragrance stirred in me when I smelled it. If that’s not desired, please delete.
Colonia Napoletana, I received you yesterday as a sample in my mailbox. A thank you to the Parfumo colleague #Timo18
I had to spray you on my forearm right in the early evening, lay on the couch, and sniffed at my forearm... after a short time, something happened...
Colonia Napoletana.... you triggered something in me that no other perfume has managed to do! A small explosion in my brain, memories of an unforgettable vacation in Southern Italy, of the scents, of the tastes, and a flood of images in my mind.
I need to digress. A long, long time ago, the then-young Uncle Toto was sitting in a restaurant with his best friend. My best friend is Italian, no wait, he is Southern Italian, he insists on that, sono dal Sud. It was early May, we were chatting about this and that, and I said that I had the last 3 weeks of May off, after a long busy time I was exhausted. My friend said he still had some vacation days left that he needed to take, and he asked at work if he could get off. If it worked out, I should go with him to his old homeland. "You've never been down here, you only know the North. Everything is different with us." I thought, yes... why not...???... The next morning my phone rang "Amico mio, tutto chiaro, andiamo al sud". A few days later, it was time to go.... Departure in the evening, about 70 km north of Frankfurt on the highway, in the left lane, through the night, everyone had an infusion of delicious Kimbo coffee in their arm.
At sunrise, the border to Bella Italia, Benvenuti in Italia. Totally cliché :-)
Immediate change of the SIM card in the phone (this was before smartphones and the like), La Famiglia is informed... siamo alla via. Pit stop at the first brother's place near Milan, slept a few hours in his pizzeria, ate pornographic pizzas, and it was time to head further south. No, brother 2 calls, you have to eat at my place tonight. Okay, we’re going to Piacenza.
My friend's sister-in-law, a true Neapolitan, had a German in the house for the first time, and the German... look, he can even speak Italian. We sit at the table, and I am served a proper plate of pasta... MANGIA MANGIA!!!
Uncle Toto takes the fork in hand, brings the full fork to his mouth... Bam... all conversations stop, everyone looks at me, I have the music from Jaws in my ear, the pasta in my mouth, indescribably delicious, a pasta porn, I say how genius she has cooked.
HE LIKES IT..... The sister-in-law jumps up from her chair, pulls me up from my chair, hugs me, and says "You need a Neapolitan, I’ll get you one." Incredibly nice and warm-hearted people.
Late in the evening, after a new Kimbo infusion was set, we set off again. Through the night once more. Early morning arrival in my friend's hometown in the province of Salerno, between Sarno and Nocera, right in the big valley between Vesuvius and the Monti Lattari. An absolute agricultural region, I was in the homeland of San Marzano tomatoes, a tomato paradise.
I get out of the car, and immediately smell the scents of the agricultural area. In May, everything was still in full bloom and color, not yet withered by the sun.
I smelled the lemon trees from the neighboring property, the herbs in the yard, subtly herb-citrusy, green-fresh.
Colonia Napoletana, that’s exactly what your opening reminds me of. I have never experienced that with any other Italian perfume!
Colonia Napoletana, I remember two situations where I imagine you smell just like it did in those moments.
One evening I was so stuffed that I said I needed to go for a walk, we walked through the little village, at the edge of the village long rows of pines, cypress trees, chestnut trees, olive trees, lemon trees, bay trees, countless herbs. That’s exactly how you smell when the lemony notes from the top note have receded. That evening, a near-death experience... we passed by the house of a school friend of my friend, were invited in, and were immediately served plates and a Frittata di Spaghetti... I survived!
One morning my friend said we were going to the Amalfi Coast, to the coastal towns. Halfway there, we stopped at the top of the Monti Lattari, got out of the car, and I enjoyed this indescribably beautiful panorama, an orgasm for my eyes. And right there is again the scent of Colonia Napoletana, that’s exactly how I remember it, up there the air was not yet enriched with salty sea scent, it was simply fresh-green-pleasant-refreshing.
Colonia Napoletana, just these two moments and you, they fit together like a butt on a pot! If someone asks me in the future if I connect a scent, a perfume, with Italy, YES... YOU! After this flashback, there is only YOU as an answer for me.
Colonia Napoletana, you are not a killer scent, you will probably never become a hype perfume that is pushed by YouTubers across the net, you are not a sillage monster, no loudmouth that beats its chest and screams "Here I AM... Go smell ME"!
You are not for show-offs and fakes. You are something very fine and subtle!
Actually, your price at 260 EUR is 100 EUR too high... but in your case, I will most likely not care at all. While I am typing this, I had to take the sample in my hand again, spray it on my arm, and my nose is constantly glued to my forearm. I haven’t figured out yet whether you are an EdC, EdT, or EdP, but your longevity is certainly longer than that of other Italian colognes, you can easily keep up with the standard scents.
Thank you for giving me an evening full of wonderful memories, of Kiton, and the person who created you.
These were my impressions and thoughts on this, for me, wonderful perfume. Tastes differ, and certainly, some users will see it differently than I do.
I would also like to express my recommendation for this scent to the highly esteemed Parfumo colleague #Felsn. Una fragranza dalla tua città :-)
