A dark smoky-spicy rose
This one was a big surprise. I was really nervous, so to speak, after ordering this one - blind, as always. I pretty much buy blind always since I don't (or rather didn't-it's a lot easier now) have access to sample any of these perfumes (and I hate going to malls). I always go by some basic guidelines. Most important is usually the notes/accords. Besides that I look for the house & the perfumer(s) behind the creation, year of creation/release, and of course user reviews (on the popular perfume forums). I follow a handful of key reviewers, simply due to the fact that lot of our tastes match and what we find appealing, how each perfume reacts on us seems quite similar. And it has never failed me, except on a couple of rare occasions. But when it came to this perfume, most of my key reviewers hadn't reviewed it. (I found a few other great reviews though and they were spot on). But anyway, I was unsure. And there were quite varying opinions among all the other users (as is the case always). I was picking up another dSquared2 scent (Potion) the same day when I saw a tester bottle of this at a good price. So, I had to get it. (you know how that is)

I could pick up the rose and the incense even before I pulled the bottle out of the pack. This thing explodes in your face as soon as you hit the trigger. It is thick, dark, syrupy and intense. It's heavily spicy and resinous. After about 15 mins or so it tones down a bit to reveal it's structure. A hint of citrus at the top, almost slightly bitter-ish - probably due to the pimento. I get quite a few spicy nuances - nutmeg, hints of cinnamon and a boat-load of pepper. The heart notes reveal themselves pretty much at the beginning itself. A thick, not too sweet, syrupy rose and divine frankincense. Smelling very heady and smoky. Blending really well with all the spices and a brilliantly realistic dry, non-sweet, tobacco accord. This is definitely the best stage of this fragrance. And it lasts a really long time. There's a decent, but very generic, oud-leather accord here too quite reminiscent of Montale's Aoud Leather and Dueto's Golden Boy. The drydown, which arrives some 8-10 hours later, is slightly musky with hints of powdery rose and a dusty-woody accord. This stage too lasts a long time. Another 6-8 hours easily.

Projection, sillage and longevity are on the higher side. Really solid. Go easy on the trigger. It easily lasts 24 hours on my skin and for many days on my clothes. Overall this is really well made. If not for the generic oud-leather accord and seemingly simple drydown this would have been great. Not groundbreaking but definitely good to wear (only in cold weather). Try it if you are looking for a dark smoky-spicy rose scent.

Cashmeran Fest...
Potion Royal Black opens with an extremely brief whiff of restrained bergamot citrus before transitioning to its early heart. As the composition enters its heart, the citrus disappears, giving way to a heavy barrage of black pepper spice and cashmeran-derived soft blonde woods that take the fore. Underpinning the staring spiced soft woods lies a prominent waxy accord - most likely iris based, further supported by just detectable dark dull rose and earthy dry realistic tobacco leaf from the base peeping through. During the late dry-down the cashmeran completely takes over as the florals and spice gradually recede, dominating everything in its path and remaining through the finish with trace leavings of the dry tobacco left in support. Projection is slightly above average and longevity excellent to outstanding at well over 12 hours on skin.

Potion Royal Black immediately catches the eye with its gorgeous solid black bottle in the same apothecary style of the original. With bottle looks like that, one really wants to love its contents but very early-on Royal Black's liberal use of the synthetic soft blonde woods emulator cashmeran kills any chance. If the synthetic soft woods were not enough to dissuade one's enjoyment of the composition, its waxy iris underlying mix seals the deal. There are some very passing similarities to Declaration by Cartier in this particular aspect of the composition's development but the two are quite different on the whole. What some feared but this reviewer actually hoped for was the possibility of a much more prominent rose floral aspect to the composition, but alas the rose is just barely noticeable in the heart and what is there is a very stark dulled rose that really doesn't add much to the mix. On the plus side, the dry tobacco used is extremely realistic, resembling the stuff used in Bright Leaf by Murdock but without any sweetness. The tobacco definitely is the bright spot of the development but like everything else it gets swallowed by the tenacious synthetic soft blonde woods that smother everything in their path. One final closing point to make is Potion Royal Black apart from the same bottle style has absolutely no relation to the original Potion and one should not use it as a yardstick for whether they will enjoy the original. The bottom line is Potion Royal Black with its gorgeous bottle and $55 per 100ml bottle street price is an enticing option, but its heavy-handed use of cashmeran is a composition killer, earning it a "below average" 2 to 2.5 stars out of 5 rating and a mild avoid unless you enjoy that particular ingredient.

Best.male.rose.ever.period.
Okay, maybe just my opinion but seriously, this is superb quality. I am far from a fan of rose, but this is the first time I've come across a rose scent that maintains freshness this way. Best described as a leathery rose with incense. Slightly sweet, slightly dry, slightly dark but contemporary all of the time. Masculine florals, spices, romantic leather, woods, some tobacco and incense - this cocktail is more intriguing than it sounds. Complex and kinda "mysterious". Great for a cold night of dining, dating or similar.

Longevity is excellent, projection very good and if you're lucky enough and can find this niche quality product at a reasonable price please do not hesitate to grab it!

Shared Masculinity
Dsquared stands out favorably among mainstream fragrances. While others offer a repetitive, uniform fruit mush and keep repeating themselves, Dsquared has primarily focused on woody and spicy scents in its two men's lines so far. Recently, however, they have ventured into a fruity summer fragrance with Blue Cadet, and now, like many fragrance houses, a dark night scent follows, fully in line with the current zeitgeist. One can hope that “Potion Royal Black” lives up to its name, being not only heavy but also noble.

To save on budget and designers, they continue to use the well-known Potion bottle, but coat it with a shiny black lacquer. The box follows this harmonious color scheme. It not only looks stylish but also feels very smooth yet grippy. I find it very successful.

The scent hits you like a slap in the face; you exhale, only to cautiously inhale again. Just like with “Potion,” all the fragrance notes come into play at once. There’s no top, no heart, no base. Instead, it’s a full-on punch to the face! You can't really say what you perceive first. However, all the woods are definitely present, with the oud and guaiac wood standing out as rather unusual components. Once you get used to this very intense fragrance explosion, you can also detect a few lighter components. A subtle bergamot holds on for about three hours, accompanied by rosy accents. It quickly becomes a bit scratchy, with the incense occasionally wafting in. Musk also swirls in sweetly and intensely, leaving little room for the tobacco and leather to unfold at times. After about four hours, the intense notes soften a bit, and you can at least occasionally sense the calmer notes like cashmere and cedar.

“Royal Black” is a very intense, characterful, masculine scent. It does not correspond at all to the previously prevailing mainstream of fruity fragrances. Instead, it relies on classic components like musk, tobacco, leather, and especially woods. The currently trendy oud is also used here, but for me, it is impressively subtle. You can clearly recognize the oud, but it is not so strong that it dominates “Royal Black” from start to finish. Instead of a typical oriental fragrance, I would describe it as “Orient meets Occident” - classic masculine notes unite with slightly oriental influences.

You have to immerse yourself in this scent. It is very intense, both in projection and longevity. You can enjoy this fragrance for a good 16 hours, during which I can differentiate individual notes. Even several hours later, this scent lingers. Since the sillage is quite generous, you should dose it carefully. Less can be more here. And even though I would rather classify this fragrance as a classic evening and going-out perfume, I also enjoy wearing it at the office - it is well received. I would love to make it my new signature scent, as I find it so delicious, but I fear I might soon grow weary of it, overwhelming my nose in the long run. Thus, I use “Royal Black” for occasional, but all the more powerful accents.

“Royal Black” is a dark scent, but not necessarily gloomy, as it is too cheerful and uplifting. Its masculine notes, courage, presence, and endurance elevate it. Another great potion!

Nice to be surprised again!
Due to the good reviews here and a great little bargain in the souk, I ordered the fragrance blind, something I haven't done in a long time. When it first came out, it completely passed me by without much notice and didn't stick in my memory for long.
And yet, I am quite surprised now because I really like the scent. Of course, in hindsight, I saw that there is rose in it, which is almost always a safe bet for me;-)! Royal Black features a 2-minute fresh opening, no citrus explosion, rather a companion for bright red roses, spicy woods, mild incense, and hearty spices. Despite its slightly synthetic touch, it is a very successful blend that smells more than pleasant! Oud is also present, mild and soft, but it stays discreetly in the background. Real oud is just as unlikely to be in Aigner's No1 as it is here, but it is comparable in its softness, and it's nice that the hairspray note like in Aigner has been avoided. I would rate the spicy-woody component significantly higher than the little oud;-)! The entire fragrance is very rounded, doesn't clash anywhere, but is not overly demanding and thus quickly boring. A rather quieter representative with very good longevity, 6-7 hours on the skin, 2 days on clothes. Due to the slightly more discreet sillage after 90 minutes, it is quite suitable for the office in autumn, winter, and spring.
What I really like about this fragrance is that despite the slight synthetic touch, it smells very high-quality, and you wouldn't necessarily categorize it in the mainstream area. Therefore, I give it a very solid 80%.

Dark and cool, but not cold. Old stone, twilight. Calm, like fog. Almost like a dream from another time.

Fluffy replacement wood settles like sweet, dry mist (sic!) on the skin, I can only vaguely recognize bergamot, rose & tobacco leaf. OK!

Intense sweet rose grounded by sultry dark currant. Dries down. Incense is subtle. A men's fragrance with reservations.

Dark, cozy, slightly sweaty. Then it turns, becoming woody, leathery, and incense-like. Similar to "La Yuqawam" in a reduced intensity.

The name says it all. Deep black leather. Spicy and not a bit bright. Uncompromisingly rough. Slightly artificial, but it fits.

Another proof that quality doesn't have to be expensive. A clear, bright autumn scent with excellent longevity: black is beautiful.

An excellent choice for gentlemen with style, enough self-confidence or to boost it, and gallant manners. Woody and aromatic!

Finally, a men's fragrance without the usual 0815 herbal notes and the same old chords! Wonderful subtlety and longevity. Delicious!
