Macedonia in Winter
Macedonia means nothing other than fruit salad. However, anyone who thinks of canned fruit pieces in syrup could not be more mistaken. Macedonia is prepared fresh here in Italy with fruits that are in season. Therefore, it goes without saying that such an Italian fruit salad is more colorful and diverse in spring and summer than in the cold season. Apples, oranges, mandarins, and grapefruit, but also bananas, pears, pomegranate seeds, the ingredient list knows no restrictions. Fresh from the refrigerator, it is a light and refreshing finish to an Italian Pranzo or Cena. When the bowl of Macedonia is placed on the table, it exudes a lightly fruity-sour aroma of fresh chilled fruits.
Napoli is like Macedonia. The top note opens with a full fruity aroma of citrus fruits and apple, which proudly asserts itself despite the strong presence of orange and grapefruit. This combination alone is captivating. It is worth noting that Napoli was launched before the turn of the millennium, when pineapple, apple, and other fruits did not yet hold a significant place in a fragrance pyramid. However, this top note is neither sour nor zesty. It seems to me that the ingredients have been lightly dusted with sweet vanilla powder - almost like sour drops in powdered sugar. This way, the fruits lose their sour sharpness. They appear fruity - mild, but without sweetness. I almost want to say the scent becomes slightly creamy, but not powdery. Therefore, I find Napoli a fragrance that can be worn all year round. While it leans more towards the sunny side, it also fits into the cold season due to the absence of citrus sharpness.
As the fragrance develops, a floral note sneaks in, almost shyly, and thus does not evoke any associations with a bouquet of flowers. I would say Napoli gains an elegant touch from this, which also pairs well with Kiton's dark blue suit.
While a hint of wood may creep into the base, the fruity core character of the fragrance remains intact from beginning to end.
Kiton is not Guerlain and does not manage to tell stories with Napoli the way some Guerlain fragrances can. But Napoli does not need that either.

Considering that this fragrance was already launched over 20 years ago, when freshness in the top note was synonymous with a sour-citrus freshness kick, it was very innovative even then. At that time, it also stood out with its muted freshness. The bottle in its beautiful blue conveys the character of aquatic, which I cannot identify throughout the fragrance journey. Contrary to the opinion of some previous commentators, Napoli is for me fruity-fresh and full of elegance from beginning to end.
When I apply two sprays of Napoli to my neck, a fruity veil caresses me from time to time, which is perceptible on me for a good 7/8 hours.
So now guess which fragrance I will wear this evening and what dessert will be served.

I wish everyone Happy Holidays and a Good New Year 2020.

You can be deceived like that.
I would like to share a bit about how Napoli ultimately found its way into my collection:

Even as a young person, I was very interested in fragrances. I tested everything that wasn’t quickly tucked away by a Douglas saleswoman. (That was often the case with the higher-end scents back then when the youth stormed the store.)

The Napoli bottle attracted me like a magnet. Beautiful azure blue with a kind of diamond cut and a Japanese-looking inscription. But even with the first spray, I told myself: “This one is not for you.” I don’t wear such sweet stuff. Too intrusive, too unserious.

It’s rare for me to be so mistaken about my first impression of a fragrance. Normally, I can quickly and confidently decide whether one is right for me or not.
On the other hand, it happens more often that I spontaneously like a scent, but then it falls flat in the long run. I think we all experience that from time to time.

In any case, Napoli was not a topic for me for many years. Until around 2012 when I was reminded of it here in the forum. It caught my attention that it is so highly regarded here. I participated in a sharing and had to admit that this fragrance was in a class of its own. But I still believed that I didn’t want to wear it.

There are a few bottles that I own with remaining content, simply because I consider them milestones in perfume history (see my section “Bottles with Remaining Content”). And when a 125ml bottle of Napoli with 25ml remaining was offered here in the souk, I seized the opportunity. I just wanted to have this beautiful bottle. To look at it, to sniff it, and to admire it.

I remember very well the day I actually used Napoli for the first time. It was cool outside, and I was preparing for a visit to the gym. What should I wear today? I didn’t feel like a strong fragrance. Just a hint of something. Oh, what the heck, I’ll spray a bit of Napoli on my neck.

A little later, I was on the cross trainer, just going through the motions. My skin warmed up, my circulation kicked in, and something wonderful wafted into my nose. A mix of fruit, baby powder, and sunscreen. I was thrilled. I also had the vague impression that the people around me somehow paused and sniffed. Do you know that feeling? Quite inconspicuous but still noticeable.

My curiosity was piqued, and the following weekend, I went to a football match with my buddies. Not to play myself, nor to the stadium, but to one of our regular pubs. There, people smoke, and strong frying odors occasionally fill the packed rooms. I took two sprays of Napoli and mingled with the crowd.

And lo and behold… the same noticeable reactions again. People seemed to like the scent. One of the guys even went so far as to say: “Dude, you smell good today!” That was highly unusual. I tested the fragrance a few more times, always with good results. I liked it more and more, and so did the people around me.

By now, I am the owner of a full 125ml bottle. It wasn’t exactly cheap, but I am satisfied. The search for my going-out fragrance seems to be over.

A fragrance description, as is fitting for any proper review, is not so easy for me:

At first impression, Napoli is quite sweet. Just like you would expect from fragrances that contain tonka bean. But before it can become intrusive, many fruits add their fruitiness and acidity. The whole thing then feels creamy, powdery, and incredibly attractive. There’s also a bit of bite, so the nose isn’t lulled into complacency by the creaminess but remains awake and interested.

Napoli bears a strong resemblance to many modern going-out fragrances that you can buy today. But somehow it has more style and class. It smells of joie de vivre, of the lightness of being, of a summer evening by the sea. Tasteful, confident, and alluring.

By the way, this fragrance is one of the very few that, in my opinion, can be worn in any season, for any occasion, and at any time of day.

That Napoli was discontinued after a short time can only be explained by the fact that many users experienced something similar to me: We simply didn’t sniff well enough.

Liberté toujours
Well-groomed, fresh, clean, sexy, seductive, relaxed. And all of this with substance. A sweet barbershop scent with the It-factor. Where Rochas' Man, Montblanc's Individuel, and their relatives struggle and miss the mark or lack quality, Napoli sits calmly on the edge of the bed or the rooftop, smiling slyly.

Clean lavender, herbaceous bergamot, licorice - sweet, but not too sweet - gentle orange, and a well-rounded, slightly powdery-woody vanilla create an indescribably attractive, aromatic blend from the very first moment, coming across as so relaxed and perfectly balanced that I can't stop marveling all day long. And just after 10 minutes, the familiar question arises: Why is such a fragrance being discontinued?

The quality of the ingredients is not as high as with Guerlain, Chanel, Hérmes & Co., but there is nothing artificial that bothers, no component is overstimulating. Its balance makes it seem effortless. In this, it reminds me of another Italian: Acqua di Parma's Colonia. Or a pop song where everything fits, and you can't tell if it was written in 10 minutes or if it took years. It doesn't matter. The result and the emotions count. And they fit here. Enjoyment without regret. Liberté toujours.

Artful, summery-floral elegance with an Italian touch
Once again, a huge "what a pity"!

Kiton, rarely found in the perfume sector and now practically only represented by their well-crafted, pleasant, but somehow also boring "Kiton Men" on the shelves, could once do things differently.

"Napoli" truly has a lot to offer for fans of stylistically unique, clearly Italian craftsmanship in fragrance art - plenty of good vibes, summer packaged, with high-quality aromatic components and suitable for wearing with a suit to boot!

Apple, bergamot, and orange appear as a fairly equal trio of fruits, wonderfully soft and creamy in presentation. Nothing clumsy or overly juicy about it, but chic, casual, and even slightly powdery.

The heart is beautifully integrated, a perfectly harmonizing lily of the valley, accessible and fresh-floral, and together with jasmine creates a lovely, gentle transition into the floral realm.

The base wraps everything up exemplary, a delicate vanilla/tonka bean binds everything sweetly, but only very gently. Cedar provides backbone.

This is how I envision an artful, harmonious fresh-floral-fruity Italian scent that perfectly evokes spring feelings and can atmospherically and recognizably usher in summer, spreading joy both in the morning and in the evening when going out - also due to its good longevity.

Please, Kiton, exchange this one for your smooth, somewhat dull "Man" again! :-)

Why didn't I discover you sooner?
After a long odyssey, I finally got a sample of Napoli... the myths and praises are almost overwhelming. One thing is for sure... if you believe the words, then it must be THE fragrance par excellence. I paid little attention to the "normal" Kiton back then, as it was for me at most a solid office scent. Therefore, I probably overlooked the blue brother back then... and I regret that very much now! Napoli is a really great fragrance... was... unfortunately, I have to say.
Great citrus notes, not sharp, piercing, or particularly green... not ethereal or particularly nature-oriented... rather soft, round... a less sweet and toned-down version of Dulcis in Fundo by Profumum Roma. On top of that, there is a beautiful aquatic, slightly salty note... which doesn't even remotely resemble a shower gel freshness... because that note ruins almost every fresh scent that is supposed to be a bit more masculine for me. However, I don't perceive Napoli as purely masculine... at most 60:40... practically a prime example of unisex. Napoli has a very unique kind of freshness... but also radiates something warm at the same time.

Conclusion: For this fragrance, it would almost be worth starting a petition, just like back in the day for oak moss, or Kiton finally puts its office bore to sleep and lets this great scent "rise again"... one can still dream, right?;-)! Still, I am not willing to pay these ridiculous and dizzying prices online... at some point, the fun stops. Longevity with 6-7 hours is perfectly fine, and you can immediately tell from which decade the fragrance comes... because a modern fresh scent barely lasts 3-4 hours at that level... if at all. What a shame... I missed that chance (back then).

Never liked it as much as the original Kiton. Fruity citrus notes on a vanilla-tonka wood base with floral undertones. Delicate shower gel tendency.

Great fruity cedar/vanilla - so Zanille :) It has that fruity-warm element of Roma/Minotaure and delights the 90s nose. Longevity 11.
