Luminous and so, so elegant
Leonard shares some similarities to YSLs Paris, in that they both have quite prominent Rose and powdery Iris hearts, and because they both exemplify a very french type of esthetique and composure, but though these two fragrances are structurally somewhat similar, YSLs Paris veers in a different direction with the addition of sweet Violets, where as Leonard de Leonard maintains a more "bitter", aromatic edge because of its springlike, greenish, Hyacinth accord.

But what really sets Leonard apart from other french, Rose centered, chypres of its kind is its dazzling, emerald green opening, its nuanced note of soft, sueded Leather, and an exquisite, delicate note of moist earth, all of which add distinctive dimensions to this composition, and elevate the lush florals to new levels of refined sophistication. Truly beautiful.

A lesser known must-have beauty for chypre lovers.
This is such a beauty! Such an amazing floral chypre with just a hint of a bitter note, just like i love it! I am deeply in love with this perfectly balanced and extremely feminine perfume! When i wear it i feel like i am in a blooming garden full of flowers with a freshly cut green grass. Opening is more green (this is chypre after all), but the more it stays on your skin, the more beautiful it becomes. I like specially the drydown, which is more flowery than the opening.
Certainly a must have for old style chypre lovers!
Sadly, it does not last long on my skin (about 4-5 hours), but since it is a EDT i guess it is ok. Not a sillage monster, but it don´t have to be. Very much underrated beauty, which i treasure every bottle of.

Nice Day for a White Wedding
Leonard de Leonard is not perhaps the most original of fragrances; it smells like a cleaner version of the old, unreconstructed Magie Noire (before Lancome homogenized its bases so that all its fumes smell pretty much like each other). L de L is a nice-girl kind of chypre, full of muguet and other luxurious flowers and assorted greenery. I could see it as a bridal scent, hence the title of this post.

This is another perfume I found on a Basenotes thread about underestimated fragrances current and past. Isn’t Basenotes fantastic?

Leonard de Leonard is a fruity, green-floral chypre. And every time I think it’s a little too sweet for my taste, I get the purr of the leather and reconsider. This is an LOL chypre (light on leather.) Not usually my preference, but LdL uses its sweetness smartly. It’s not a counterpart to the admittedly light leather note. Rather, it matches the tone of the florals. Green plum-like notes gibe with the watery sweetness of the lily of the valley and hyacinth. The leather actually seems to fit with an unidentifiable spiciness that becomes, along with the leather, more noticeable yet oddly not any stronger in the drydown. This is the part that won me over. I feared LdL might be headed for a bad, sweet soapiness, but the leather and spice steer it away from soap and toward a lightly mossy chypre drydown.

A rich floral composition of violet and rose: powdery, fruity, silky, luminous; beautiful; like Paris in fact. (Sophia Grojsman, 1983)
