It Awakens Every Sense
As spring looms, Ambre truly shines. Its smoky, resinous warmth intertwines with the gentle breeze on my face, creating a perfect harmony. Ambre is an unexpected masterpiece. The bold masculinity of dark notes seamlessly balances with the delicate femininity of powdery ones, creating a magical blend. The resulting aroma is sensual, luxurious, and utterly captivating—it awakens every sense.
Ambre opens with an intense resinous aroma—dense, smooth, smoky, and slightly boozy, reminiscent of star anise with its subtle liquorice note. The initial burst of alcohol fades quickly, revealing the prominent amber and incense accords from the background. This fragrance delves into darkness, offering a rich, dense character without becoming overly sweet or heavy. Both cloves and geranium leaves are hefty, spicy and green. There is no space for a citrus whisper, just straightaway to dark pods and velvety leaves.
Floral notes introduce the heart of the scent with ylang-ylang, iris, and rose, transforming Ambre into one of the finest amber fragrances. The floral accord is warm, overly powdery, and inviting, with the iris leaning more towards baby powder than lipstick gloss—gentle and soothing. The powderiness is dominant, and the first dusty blossom pops up, leading to the middle stage. Next to the flowers, I catch a good amount of wood, both blonde and brown, a creamy sandal, a dry cedar, and a profound gaiac. The tenderness of the flowers and the strength of the woods are held together by a medicinal and dark patchouli, not too clean, indeed, old school I would think.
The base of vanilla and resins adds a creamy richness, perfectly balanced by patchouli and musk. These elements support the amber structure with a luxurious touch, avoiding the typical powdery finish. As the fragrance evolves, the incense grows stronger, enhancing the smoky, peppery depth and evoking imagery of medieval Gothic rituals and mysticism. The patchouli note becomes less pronounced, and brighter than in many other colognes, while labdanum and benzoin intertwine seamlessly. This creates a high-quality, powdery amber aroma that’s both dry and balanced—robust yet cosy. All the notes that give birth to the amber accord are there, and discernable one by one.
Ambre is undeniably a full-bodied, creamy fragrance. Its longevity is exceptional, lasting hours after application, and its sillage is impressive. Like a fine wine, it develops beautifully over time, requiring patience to appreciate its complexity fully. A true gem for amber enthusiasts, Ambre strikes the perfect balance between sensuality and sophistication, making it an ideal choice for the autumn and winter seasons. Whether indoors or out, its luxurious warmth and depth will undoubtedly leave an unforgettable impression. Ambre’s boldness and smoky undertones make it particularly suited for cooler weather and those who appreciate a dramatic, opulent scent. Do not expect this scent to be modern or anything close to ambroxan, it is the opposite of "Erba Pura | XerJoff". Indeed, Ambre stands out as a luxurious and complex amber fragrance, offering a unique blend of resinous, smoky, and floral notes. Compared to other amber fragrances, Ambre leans heavily into its dark, smoky, and slightly boozy character, setting it apart from lighter or more straightforward trendy amber scents. This is an amber fragrance, but it's fairly subtle and has a baby-powder aspect.
I base my experience on a bottle I've owned since February 2025.
