No Peach Cobbler
Peach and cinnamon are the main themes in this scent, but "La Dandy" is not a sweet dessert fragrance.
The peach note does not come across as natural to me; it is fascinatingly "different," appearing abstract, very bright, and penetrating.
I suspect some peach-scented molecule, a peach aldehyde, that strongly sets the tone throughout the entire fragrance journey.
This artificial quality gives the peach note a crystal-clear, clean, and translucent character from start to finish, preventing the peach in this fragrance from ever becoming peach jam or an overly sweet, overripe peach. The note remains unchanged from the first spray to the last minute and stands like a lighthouse in the composition. Only the environment in which it shines changes, evolving from relatively cool and fresh to delicately creamy, mildly sweet, and airy warm.
The first hour is still relatively fresh thanks to bergamot and this transparently glowing peach fruitiness. The peach note feels very delicate, as if I am only smelling the fuzzy skin of a peach, embedded in cool-creamy cardamom, accompanied by tonka and spices, all at a very calm and quiet level, just like the entire fragrance appears with the handbrake on. D’Orsay does here roughly the same as in "Etiquette Bleue," which is a pronounced citrus scent but not a screaming citrus hammer. Just like this "La Dandy" is a distinct peach scent, but not a fruit monster.
The fragrance remains on the cool side on my skin for a long time. The bergamot significantly holds back the peach; I do not recognize the cloves here as a typical smoky-spicy aroma, but rather as "air conditioning," allowing a cool, refreshing breeze to flow through the fragrance. The cinnamon is also unsweetened, but I perceive its fine, aromatic spiciness, a dry cinnamon pod that I sniff. In the background, extra delicate, sweet tones shine from the tiniest hint of honey you can imagine, and a creamy tonka bean that appears here not vanilla-like, but very slightly earthy-nutty.
The further development is fine and airy creamy (ylang, cardamom, and tonka) with a shy, very bright freesia and the peach, which still feels "smooth," abstract, and unsweetened to me. The closer to the base, the more the fragrance warms up, it becomes sweeter, but remains consistently very restrained, in my perception very distant, even unapproachable.
Through the abstract, artificial peach brightness, I experience with each wear the astonishing effect as if the fragrance and I are separated by a fine layer of gauze. "La Dandy" does not come close to me, does not touch me emotionally, does not evoke images, no head cinema, no memories, so actually all reasons to forget the fragrance. But still, the fragrance works for me strangely… because it simply smells good. And I bought it.
An "adult," fluffy, largely cool, constantly brightly glowing, strikingly peach-like fragrance surrounded by moderately sweet, gentle warmth and balanced with airy spiciness.
