Sweet, but not too sweet
When I was a lot younger, I filled my wardrobe with anything and everything sweet and foody. These days sweet scents rarely appeal to me, especially the loud, gourmand types. Escada Magnetism is wearable due to its subtle, perhaps more grown-up nature. It's like a cross between Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb and Diesel Loverdose.

I had a good feeling about Magnetism even before testing it. A dear friend kindly sent me a sample knowing how eager I was to get hold of one. I find this fragrance pleasantly sweet without being too candy-like. I hate smelling like a sweet shop, so I did admittedly approach this fragrance with caution, but was happy to discover that it was nowhere near as sweet as some other scents on the market today.

The caramel accord is smoothed out with vanilla, benzoin and sweet fruits, like pineapple, litchi and red berries. Rather than smelling juvenile, Magnetism has a delicious, sensual edge. While men could either love it or hate it on their women, I will give it a try with my fingers crossed behind my back.

Although the note is not listed, I get a slight licoricey accord in Magnetism, which in some ways balances out the composition. There is also a beautiful greeness, that although difficult to describe, really makes this fragrance special and unique.

The longevity is quite impressive, lasting a good six hours on my skin despite its subtlety. Magnetism overall is a warm and feminine fragrance, suitable for all ages. It may not be the most popular Escada scent, but for all I know, it's one of their few products that are supposedly permanent fixtures on the market. I hope to never see the day when they discontinue it.

A scent battling with itself
Magnetism is an odd scent. To me, it feels like there are two "poles" - the basil pole and the praline pole - and each one is trying to pull other notes in its direction. Sometimes it smells like [basil + pineapple + black currant + patchouli] and is harmonious. Sometimes it smells like [praline + red berries + pineapple + black currant + vanilla] and works fine, too. Unfortunately, at several points in each wearing, there is a dispute between them, with a smell of [basil + pineapple + black currant + praline + red berries]. I think it was an interesting experiment to try lightening an otherwise heavy fruity-oriental with green notes, but ultimately it doesn't work. I'd prefer that the perfumers create less sweetness in the first place rather than creating it and trying to cut through it.

It Could've Been A Miasma But...
It's August 30, 2023 and my thoughts are this:

No, seriously. Magnetism has all the hallmarks of an olfactory cacophany—too many fruits, incoherent florals, sticky gourmand notes and so on. It should be an absolute dumpster fire of a fragrance, but it works. It's rich and gooey, sure, but it has those discordant florals and greens to keep it from coming off the rails. Magnetism surprisingly makes sense when it has no reason to do so. I've had samples of Candy Eau de Parfum and Salt Caramel, yet I returned to my bottle of Magnetism. There are far superior caramel perfumes out there, such as Madera and Alien - Le Goût du Parfum, but for the price AND quality of scent, this cannot be beat.

What I thought back on May 31, 2012:

I must confess: as much as I enjoy caramel as a confectionary treat I do not care for it in perfumes. My last rendezvous with caramel before Magnetism was disastrous; I could not scrub Hard Candy off my wrists fast enough. As the old cliché goes, “never say never,” and I am so glad I did not. Magnetism is good enough to make me go back on my word.

To look at the notes is to go into shock over the sugary overload of caramel, vanilla, and random fruits, not to mention the mishmash of greens and flowers. Had I seen the notes first I would never have considered buying this. It looks frightful but smells blissful. EM begins with a subdued creamy caramel, which is neither too saccharine nor too artificial. The vanilla-caramel sweetens just a tad with the arrival of candied fruits a few minutes after the initial spray. As terrifying as candied fruits may sound, they are merely present to add another confectionary dimension to this cozy comfort scent. The vanilla-caramel is still ever present at the heart but it mellows out, introducing a rich bouquet of varied flowers in full bloom, leaves and stems included. The base is most satisfying, incorporating the romantic notion of candies and flowers but adding an element of carnal seduction with its creamy vanilla and amber musk. Eight hours later I could smell a soft, sweetened, and warm musk; it was my skin but so much better.

As many before have stated, women will ask what you are wearing and men will trail behind, following the sillage in a devil-may-care fashion. I look weird compulsively burying my nose in my wrist but it cannot be helped when I wear this. EM is just that good.

Stuck to It
Kstadt lured with offers, and I have now decided to give away bed linen to match the fragrances.

For "White Linen" white bedding - why not?

My best friend found the idea original and supported me in my endeavor.
Only my husband grumbled, as he is not fond of wandering around consumer temples.

For him, "shopping" means more like "walking in" - and so we hurried through the halls at a brisk pace.
With hair flowing past the fragrances - but wait! What is stopping my victorious run?
A violet Escada is smiling at me.
Full stop and a quick sniff.

Oh - what a beautiful soft fruity opening!
Gently berry-like, drizzled with sweet honeydew melon.
Delicious.
I am softly nestled on roses - surrounded by calming jasmine.
Sandalwood embraces me creamily, wafted by a delicate caramel note.

My husband shifts from one foot to the other and taps his wristwatch.
But I assure him convincingly that I am stuck to a "magnet."
He must accept that.

To cut the long story short, he grabs the bottle and takes it to the checkout.
His impatience is good for my collection.

I found the perfect satin bed linen for the fragrance, adorned with charming blue tits, sitting on green branches with cassis-colored flowers.

I think I will enjoy this scent-linen combination myself.

magnetic sex appeal or: my first thought after sex
Bonjour mes amies,

I know, I haven't let you hear from me in a while,
but your LA is back, and today of course in a typically sexually charged manner.

The bottle, a violet-pink crystal, deep, magical, mysterious, amoureuse.

Exactly to my taste, because we are dealing here with a true eye-catcher, it magnetically draws attention, fascinates and hypnotizes.

The color is neither girlish nor kitschy, but mature and grown-up. Feminine, clear, but not playful, rather aware of its own radiance.

[Note: the color in the picture is definitely too bright and can lead to misconceptions, because when you unpack the good thing, you hold a very deep violet glass in your hands, which looks quite dark and there is no trace of pink]

The scent? Deep dark berries, red, black, violet, ripe. Sweetness seeps through their pores and mixes with matured vanilla. Lolita meets Femme Fatale,
introversion meets sexiness. The wearer (of course also the wearer) is not ashamed of her charms, is not ashamed to be a woman, is not ashamed to embrace her sexual attraction.

No firecracker, no cotton candy, at most a cherry lollipop in the mouth of an enfant terrible. Sweet and calculating at the same time.

A perfume suitable for the evening, one that wants to go out and attract, Magnetism. Even if some may find my comments offensive,
this scent has found its way onto a bedsheet more than once, settled on a pillow, or made another skin pulse. Even if I may have disappeared, Magnetism remained, and whoever forgets the day, the date, the time of the brief promise will keep this scent in their memory forever. And isn't that ultimately what distinguishes us? Not to be forgotten, but to always, somehow, somewhere remain in memory and sweeten some everyday life by taking you back to the place where it all began?

Conclusion:

Even if you call me obscene, vulgar, or driven,
I tell you one thing, this scent is my Signature of Sex,
I attract magically, I undress magically.
Whoever dares, should go for it. To all others, I say,
those who never dare to leave their cave will never get to know the adventures of desire.

In this sense,
feel seduced...

Fun and fruity, casual, cozy, sweet but more floral than yummy, an easy reach for hanging out or going out...a great-smelling crowd pleaser.

Starts impressively. I've never smelled such a combination.
But then it quickly becomes sweet and ordinary, sometimes there's a hint of synthetic.

Smells like a woman who danced the night away at the club, and you can't tell: Is it a perfume or her skin? Either way, it's stunning...

Popobombe in the sweet fruit punch,
hurts quite a bit with too much exuberance,
better to have a floral bath with creamy vanilla caramel.

Expected something worse from the name + bottle. I find a sweet fruity-floral that turns into a balsamic caramel cream. Nice for dark days.

Lychee and pineapple are mildly refreshing, not too sticky, and welcomed by a cut flower and creamy, warm touches. Great!

It's really loud here without being intrusive - sweet, fruity, vanilla, and from the delicious heart note, it's dreamily caramel seductive.
