Vintage beast!
I remember I did a blind buy of this fragrance about ten years ago or so, it came with the body wash & lotion. I remember purchasing it because it was/still is very affordable & I said wth not?

When I first smelled this, it definitely is a vintage type fragrance if I could use that term ever so loosey... I knew from the first spray that this would not be for me as it is too floral with carnation & gardenia taking over & those are two florals that I detest so I put it up & never touch it again until about a few weeks ago.

A lovely fragrance friend of mine who lives out in the bay area in Cali loves vintage style frags so I gathered up a nice package with some samples & sent her the set, she was thrilled with this fragrance as she loves it. I am glad someone will get good use out of it & will actually enjoy it because I knew I was not.

I will give this fragrance credit for having good projection & longevity especially given the price point. I do enjoy my vintage types of fragrances, but this is a big thumbs down for me!

Head of it's Time
if you want to make yourself known
this is the right perfume this fragrance
demands your attention.
the begining the cypre greens with
undertones of bergamot lavender &
hiacynth the lemon just floats into the
backround. a couple of minutes later
going though a sweet narcissus gardenia
stage but the spicy residue of cypre
still lingers but in a earthier scent
with rose cinnamon and cardamon.

the drydown is an intoxicating myrrh.
a bit dated now but i think it was ahead
of it's time released in 1968 but the
perfume design and the box with it's
big bold black lettering NORELL
makes you think of a 80's bussiness
advertisments or a barbara kruger famous
piece of work your body is a battlegroun

this is one of those sex in a bottle
perfumes because it is sexy
a perfume for a young women with an
old soul.

Imperfect
This pyramid reads wonderfully! It could have been exactly my thing: a spicy-rounded chypre with a heart of gold. I almost would have bought it blindly from a friendly perfume seller, but then I remembered the sample vial I had.

"Norell" is the first chypre in my testing series that I find truly old-fashioned. I was almost a little embarrassed to sit with it on the subway. Is it the clove? The mimosa? A cologne undertone? I don't like it ... It is spicy and green and perhaps has everything a chypre needs to truly be one. Yet I still miss something.

It is so thin. "Like butter spread too thin on too much bread," if you know what I mean ... Just a shadow compared to its chypre relatives that reside in my collection. My favorite pieces are so wonderfully rounded and indescribably rich in facets that I find it pure pleasure to inhale them.

"Norell," on the other hand, is like a popsicle, where I love ice cream. That's how it is. And not otherwise.

The Green with the Golden Heart
Norell is thoroughly American, authentically so, as real as it gets. After all, its creator was also a true American. Born in 1900 in Noblesville, Indiana, as Norman David Levinson, with great artistic ambitions from a young age, Norman Norell became one of the best and most famous American designers. In the 1920s, he worked for Paramount Pictures, outfitting various film projects with Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino, and other silent film stars. Later, he worked for Ziegfeld Folies on Broadway.

From 1928 to 1941, he was employed by Hattie Carnegie, received a total of 5 Coty Fashion Awards, and was the founder and president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). Norman Norell passed away in 1972. In 2000, he was honored by the city of New York - along with other famous American designers - in the form of bronze plaques with images of each designer embedded in the ground on 7th Avenue, the so-called "Fashion Walk of Fame."

Like many of his designer colleagues, Norman Norell released perfumes under his name, but only two: Norell and Norell II.

The first fragrance - Norell - is a classic chypre, but of a special kind. I own the EdP and have tested it multiple times before I was able to describe this wonderful scent.

Its dark leaf-green top note almost comes across as fougere, but it is not. It is a deep, dark, aromatic green that requires no citrus freshness or similar notes to tune into its true scent.

Norell takes time to unfold its green-tinged, yet wonderfully floral heart. Spices give it a certain warmth, but otherwise leave the space to the flowers. Individually, no flowers can be identified; the heart note is simply too perfectly composed. It is so exceptionally beautiful that it is a true pleasure to sniff it again and again.

In the base, the chypre is rounded off by dark, mossy, warm notes - again, no sweetness, yet an unparalleled softness and elegance that nestles the flowers into the moss-soft base.

Norell is definitely not a scent for testing in a perfume store, as the herbal, dark green top note might rather deter than entice. Nothing here is designed superficially, nothing is left to chance.

Only when the heart note develops does Norell become a fragrance to fall in love with. For me, there is an absolute risk of addiction here, and although I wouldn't wear Norell every day, it is a scent for the winter half of the year, for the darker, cooler season, which it can brighten up with its soft, warm scent accords.

This American certainly possesses the level of French perfume houses!

Herb-smoky-aldehyd-soapy, spicy-powdery floral mix, balanced base, sillage very strong, too much "mature" + old-fashioned for me, not my style.

The perfumer's signature is unmistakable, reminiscent of vintage Fidji. A beautiful green chypre, unfortunately no longer available.

Light apple note, something pricks my nose, soapy and floral.
