The Real Deal...

Licenced by the Royal Horticultural Society, Bronnley have produced a line of perfumes and toiletries based around traditional English flowers. I have a soft spot for sweet peas as my mother grew them in our garden when I was a child. Their sweet and slightly green fragrance have always brought back good memories of playing in the garden when young.

This is an inexpensive perfume and comes in a large 100ml bottle. However, don't be fooled that it is lacking in quality. From the moment it is applied, this beautiful soliflore surrounds one in a cloud of sweet peas as if fresh in a garden. I can almost touch the velvet petals and see the green tendrils curling around playfully. It remains the same through to the dry down for approximately 4-5 hours. Bronnley have avoided the temptation to add musk or woods to this and have kept it true to the pretty cottage garden flower of which it bears the name.

This is perfect for a lazy summer's day, relaxing in the warmth as one reclines upon the picnic rug after an alfresco repast. If you like sweet pea and/or solifores, I highly recommend trying this. I shall be getting hold of some of the others in the range to see if they live up to the same high standard.

The Signature Scent of My Mother

My mother has a small perfume collection, and "Sweet Pea" is one of the scents she regularly wears during the summer months. And it is definitely one of my absolute favorite scents on her! The fragrance itself is in no way overpowering, yet there is often a pleasantly light veil trailing behind her as she walks by.

We also have sweet peas in our garden, which allows me to make a direct comparison, and to my nose, "Sweet Pea" very clearly smells like sweet pea. The perfume itself is overall rather "light."

On the Search for the Sweet Pea Scent...

Sweet peas belong - just like freesias - to the flowers that have fascinated me since childhood: because of their vibrant colors but especially because of their intense fragrance. I always envied the gardeners in the neighboring garden settlement who could adorn their fences with this beautiful colorful curtain of scent. Unfortunately, the success on our property was only moderate...
Now, of course, I am also looking for just such a scent! I have three perfumes that feature the sweet pea as a key note (or even in the name): "Pois de Senteur" (Fragonard), "Pleats Please" EDT (Miyake), and of course "Sweet Pea" (I better not mention the sweet pea scent from Demeter - it unfortunately comes across as quite artificial). I wore all three today throughout the day (since I need a shower every few hours due to the heat, this works out fine!), to compare them.
"Pleats" is the sweetest of the three; for brief moments, I thought I recognized the original sweet pea scent, but not really. "The Fragonard scent is lovely-light, but not sweet, a "bright" and unobtrusive floral scent. However, I remember the scent of sweet peas differently!
Well, SP doesn't really capture the sweet pea scent in my opinion either. But that could also be because the other floral notes overshadow the sweet pea scent. Of the three, it is the "greenest" representative, and to me, it feels like a colorful bouquet with a bit of greenery as a complement. I can't relate to the classification of "sweet" that two members here have made, but every nose perceives differently.
Even though it is still not the "original sweet pea scent," I give it 90% (with a tendency towards 85% due to the not-so-great longevity on my skin), because I really like this bouquet of flowers. It feels much more natural to me than "Pleats Please" and more characterful than "Pois de Senteur," both of which I rated at 80%.
