Nightswimming
With aquatic perfumes, it's a strange thing - there is probably no fragrance family that is viewed as critically as water scents - and I am no exception. I do know a few very nice aquatics, but most I find either too one-dimensional and linear or simply too artificial. There is nothing wrong with building an entire perfume around a consistent pitch - this has been done a thousand times with vanilla, sometimes really beautifully - but you have to genuinely like that pitch. And too often, aquatics rely 'only' on their strained youthful masculinity and on oddly sounding (and smelling) terms like 'ozone-' or 'sky-air accords', pretending to have sophistication where there is none.
Outremer's Océane is comparatively honest. It is uncomplicated and simply made - and it does not get lost in grandiose algae or 'ultramarine seaweed' nonsense - and it also avoids overly flashy disco and 'where I am, there is the front' accords. Instead, it paints a simple dark blue on the skin. It has a slightly grassy component, something vaguely moist and woody - and yes, it also has a slight shower gel note, without which an aquatic wouldn't be an aquatic. It is not a light and not a profound scent, but still not an inconsequential one - like a nighttime (forbidden and dangerous - do not try this at home!) round at the public swimming pool or on a secluded beach - with friends, bottles of beer, and without swim trunks.
Conclusion: I know only a few aquatic perfumes for which spending a lot of money would be worthwhile - like Hermessence Épice Marine or Profumum Roma's Acqua di Sale. I only know Outremer's Océane from stores in France and the USA - there it costs almost nothing - but for anyone whose path it might cross - it is certainly worth a benevolent nose.
