Overpriced Average P.2 or Why the Premium Isn't Worth It
After the Cologne (see previous review) was so disappointing, I hoped for an improvement with the perfume. Well, to get straight to the point: It really hasn't succeeded here due to personal preferences, which I will mention later, or in terms of longevity & sillage.
A beautiful delight of fresh citrus fruits opens this fragrance once again, predominantly grapefruit. Lavender also supports with a crisp freshness. Compared to the Cologne, it is less herbal Cool Water aquatic, less blackcurrant & spicier - pink pepper, green apple & vetiver are more present. Thus, it is even more bitter -> peppery, sour & green-grassy. Unfortunately. I also get that slightly ozonic/aquatic chlorine note (including Calone) with a swimming pool vibe that I can't get out of my nose, even if it's less present/shorter! I don't like aquatic scents anyway, no matter how little. Of the listed flowers, the beautiful lily of the valley stands out on me, jasmine is secondary without gum vibes or indolic notes. Dove knows how to handle flowers. It is followed by sour green apple, supported by sweet & green grassy vetiver, giving the whole thing a green, sour-sweet touch, which was already present through the bitter Cool Water herbs, which does not suit my taste at all. If it were less herbal, sour-green, chlorine-like-aquatic & performed better, it could have become quite a decent fragrance in the fresh-fruity genre, because the lily of the valley in combination with grapefruit & lavender is nice. Nevertheless, due to the more present apple & vetiver here, I prefer the Cologne, as it seems less bitter-sour-green, despite the stronger chlorine in the Cologne! For me, it's the lesser evil, as I can't stand apple & vetiver with their green-sour & grassy character. I congratulate those who cannot perceive all these things. The musk here is clean/white, balanced, and minimally creamy-powdery. The woods are also present, and well, they provide a woody undertone as usual. Here less artificial, the cedarwood can be identified a bit better in the later development with a pencil-like character. Together with amber & vetiver, they create a shower gel base that is not bothersome. Overall, it feels well-groomed, blue, aquatic, slightly soapy, fresh laundry & shower. Another difference, which only becomes apparent later, is the balsamic resins consisting of benzoin & labdanum, which give a cozy-greasy or resinous-balsamic feeling, and appear even creamier due to the musk-amber combo. In this respect: It is indeed a bit deeper & more interesting than the Cologne in the base. But also only minimally perceptible.
An hour has passed, and the sour apple & chlorine smell has fortunately calmed down. But unfortunately, so has the entire fragrance!
Thus, we also come to the poor longevity & sillage: Here too, I really have to make an effort or get very close to the sprayed area to smell it, which does not happen with other fresh fragrances from my collection like Imagination, "The Monarch | The Dua Brand / Dua Fragrances" or Dior Homme Sport (2021), as these are significantly more present & longer-lasting in the air with the same dosage, so it’s not really my skin. After just a few minutes, only close to the skin for 4 hours & then only the remnants of the base left, just like with the Cologne. I don't like to spray on clothing. Overall, once again a short-lived, quiet perfume that doesn't harm a fly, but also isn't perceived by any fly, just like all fresh Rojas.
One might think: That makes it all the more pleasant/less synthetic, or as some would say "understated"! No. Just because Roja doesn't have synthetic fragrance materials like ambroxan, calone, or iso-e-super clearly listed in the fragrance pyramid, it doesn't mean that they aren't used, let alone that a natural scent profile is created: See the synthetic monster "Oceania | Roja Parfums" or a chlorine-filled swimming pool like "Elysium Parfum Cologne (Eau de Parfum) | Roja Parfums". Synthetics are unavoidable; it rather depends on how well they are integrated, and in some fresh Rojas, they are simply unpleasant. Roja is not in the slightest a natural perfume!
Well then: Is the premium worth it? For me, the Cologne is already overpriced, so clearly no. Elysium has not been reinvented or anything like that. Most Rojas differ between versions in DNA & longevity only minimally. So neither the (for me) unpleasant swimming pool apple DNA & poor longevity, nor the price of €9/ml for a trivial fresh scent that references well-known works from the mainstream (Cool Water, Aventus & numerous blue designers) and leaves me cold, appeal to me. In this respect, just overpriced & mass-appeal average, once again.
I would like to add one more thing: If you want a real grapefruit-vetiver that is free from apples in the swimming pool, I can only recommend "Zara Emotions N°01 - Vetiver Pamplemousse (Eau de Parfum) | Zara". Although it also has poor longevity, it is much more natural & cheaper.
I hope that with the new release Elysium Eau Intense a worthwhile flanker will finally come out! I am looking forward to the test! The bottles look nice on the shelves...
To start with, I also don’t like aquatic scents and stay away from them! I wouldn’t have categorized Elysium in that direction without knowing it, but I haven’t experienced it personally! Your really thorough analysis of the perfume and the detailed scent description are a great help for me in assessing the Elysium fragrances! I’m really looking forward to it!
In summary: At first, everything is nice, but once again, the price ;)
Elysium pp doesn't need to be reinterpreted; it's simply the perfume version.
Roja has his own idea of freshness, and as he mentioned in one of his interviews: he doesn't like typical aquatic notes; he's more of a gourmand and chypre guy, and that reflects in his works!
For many, it's just about price comparisons, but no one says you have to have the scent in your collection for it to be worth it. I wouldn't recommend your Zara alternative either, as most Zara fragrances rarely have such a development and can cause headaches-but yes, there's that price again ;)
And your comment definitely shows that it smells pretty good at first until the price brings you back to reality-which hurts, so it deserves a bad rating :)
Your description, on the other hand, smells like a 9.5 ;)
The top note is good (grapefruit & lavender)! After that, it smells like a swimming pool & apples (unpleasant), so I can't agree with you that it has nothing aquatic in its scents -> Elysium swimming pool cologne & Klosteinwelle Oceania.
Price is just another factor because it smells bad & hardly lasts. I wouldn't want to wear this scent since it smells too much like chlorine & green apples. I've bought fragrances for nearly €400, but at least I liked them. And about Zara: it really smells more natural than any fresh Roja. It's worth a try :)
Some people might like chlorine & apples and would rate it higher (or they just don't notice it, good for them!), but not me!
Beware, blasphemy isn't well-received. But I can only agree. It's an excessively overpriced, joyless, and strict scent that is probably still being hyped excessively thanks to influencers.
With Calone, you could probably revive me from a coma like smelling salts; it ruins every fragrance for me. But that's just your impression. Not a good one, though ;-) Great review again!
I don't know this scent, but I think it's great that you always provide constructive criticism. - You detail your perceptions clearly. It's always understandable why you like or dislike a fragrance. - I wish I could distinguish the individual nuances and aromas as well as you do. I often can't do that, which makes it hard for me to explain why I don't like a scent. - It just is what it is, but your reviews give readers a clear picture.
Very detailed review, great how you perceive even the faintest aromas! I also find the scent clearly overpriced! I'm not opposed to the DNA; I can imagine it would work well in warm weather :)
The perfect review for the statement, very detailed and helpful! Sooner or later, I'll tackle the Roja fragrances too, but the prices especially hold me back.
I also find it too expensive. I agree with that. But that fine amber-balsamic note in the base and the musk make it irresistible for me. That's why I hunted down a leftover bottle of Mr. Polly. Affordable, of course. Fortunately, I don’t associate it with swimming pools and chlorine. I enjoy swimming, but I don’t need it in my perfume. By the way, I find the longevity and sillage quite powerful, but I do have a rather sensitive nose.
Thanks for the comment again 😊 I also think it's quite successful, but unfortunately on me it develops with chlorine & apple differently. So I can only congratulate you again :) 👍🏼
@Schoeibksr
I rated Oceania poorly, that's true. But it's because I associate it with completely different things.
However, the top notes are always very well done with Roja; I really don't get the whole "Klostein" theme.
As for the Scandal: I reviewed the PDC, which is truly catastrophic. The perfume, on the other hand, is a whole different ball game-probably the best fougère so far.
@Kossoolli I'm currently testing different brands. Here, I've revisited some fragrances I've already tested for reviews.
I'm not the only one who perceives a harsh toilet cleaner citrus in Oceania; just check out the other statements, and thanks for pointing that out to my nose. I'm curious to see what yours has to offer here :) As I see it, you rated Oceania & Scandal even lower than I did, so why are you portraying me as a hater? Everyone has their opinion, and that's that 😊👍🏼
You've made a statement about almost every popular Roja fragrance. They're really not as bad as you make them out to be. Sure, you can criticize the high prices, but comparing them to toilet bowl cleaners? You've got something wrong with your nose.
Finally, a clear and insightful review with deep insights into the universe of this brand.
Top!

Me too :) let's see what the new one brings… the new statement mentioned a swimming pool again…
Yes, it works well when it's warm; Cool Water does too 😎
I can only agree on the price.
