A musky blast from the past

If someone told me his was an older release from the 90s, 80s or even earlier, I would not have doubted it.

This musk has an animalic, dirty undertone and a layer of dusty vintage powder. It also has a clean, polished side. A cold patchouli, rose and white florals are all important supporting notes. The notes list says this has grapefruit blossom and jasmine, to my nose it smells more like orange blossom though.
In a way this perfume reminds me of Narciso Rodriguez For Her EDT, which makes sense as they both seem to be inspired by classic Egyptian musk oils. Nubian Musk has everything I find difficult about For Her amped up. I shouldn't like this, I'm usually more into clean and fluffy musks, but for some reason I still enjoy this a little more than For Her. Maybe because it's not as loud and comes across as more natural to me.
The opening can be harsh. The funkiness and vintage vibes are very apparent at first, and there is also a hint of a boozy note in the background that I can't quite place. The drydown is more palatable, it turns into a warm, patchouli-infused amber with a floral bouquet on top.

Even though I don't hate this, I wouldn't want to smell like this. I think it's a bit tricky to wear. I can imagine it either on someone very elegant and poised, leaning into the old-fashioned character of the perfume, or on someone very earthy and hippie-ish, leaning into the lived-in, carnal muskiness. Nothing inbetween. On the wrong person (me!) it could easily feel out of place, or even unkempt.
Well, at least it's not another boring laundry musk, I guess...
