My favourite kind of gourmand is the oft-overlooked gummy gourmand. And Mood Ring delivered that, for the first five breaths. Straight out the bottle it gives distilled Haribo. Nebulously fruity, 100% edible, an impossible orange-apple-pineapple-lemon-strawberry. However, it sombers into a cosmetic-toned floral right afterwards, and doesn’t linger for all too long. Something you might detangle your hair with, but not fight the intrusive urge to lick. Some may say that’s for the best, but it’s a scent I feel I could find anywhere. Shampoo, lip balm, a scented marker. Like I’d be tickled to get this as a Sephora birthday surprise, but I don’t think I’ll go out of my way to drop real cash on a bottle.

I may also be reaching that chronically-online point where a perfectly decent fragrance doesn’t do anything for me, now that I yearn for the truly novel and obscure.

Mental Snapshot: A hodge-podge of off-brand candy – last Halloween’s leftovers – waiting in a receptionist’s office. Not your top choices, but you’re not going to pass it over. Sour Squishers. Jelly-Os. Cheeky Rangers. Zwigglers. Yeah, sure. I’ll try some Finnish Fish.

tl;dr: empty calories

Fun, youthful
Imagine sitting in a Hawaiian park overlooking the ocean, surrounded by flowering trees, and your fruity shave ice just dripped down your wrist.
When first spritzed my immediately thought floral+artificial but not in a bad way. After a couple of minutes the "artificial" impression emerged as a soapy note. The floral is jasmine+other white flower+iris maybe?
A few minutes later the fruity notes became apparent (dragon fruit and orange. Why they packaged it as lime green idk, but it is a fun color).
I only have a sampler size, so I won't spend much more time analyzing the dry down. The notes as described on Google seem pretty accurate so far, although I do detect sandalwood in the base, whereas they say it's a "patchouli prism." Whatever that means.
It does seem to be a mood-uplifting scent.

Smells Like Middle School
This doesn't smell like scents that were popular in a particular person's middle school experience. That will change depending on the time and place. Mood Ring smells like middle school because it is evocative of so many body mists that girls in particular start to experiment with. Parents are more likely to purchase fruity, fun, and short-lasting body mists for their kids to try because they aren't mature or too strong for classrooms. Gummy candy comes to mind, but this could be any fruit-forward BBW spray. It smells like the girl in class with the gel pen hookup. It smells like overalls and cotton neon layers and scrunchies.

I was in the mood for gummy bears and got an upscale B&BW spray
With the bright green bottle and the fruit gum note, I imagined this to be a very bright, fruity, fun perfume. Maybe a bit loud or overly sweet. In reality, it's a lot muskier and more floral than I expected. I have smelled many perfumes without fruit gum in the notes list that smell much closer to a real gummy bear than this one. But maybe that's not a bad trait, gummy bears aren't the best smelling candy in the world. At least to me. If I had to compare this to any gummy candies, I'd say they're either white (pineapple flavored) or yellow/orange (citruses), not red or pink (berries). And definitely no peach or apple rings!

Mood Ring is still fruity and sweet, just not extremely so. The fruitiness is blended with a creamy, perfumey base of white musk and jasmime that is more than just a background hum. The overall perfume smells distinctly American to me, like a fancier version of a Bath & Body Works mist or lotion. I can't quite put my finger on, it's an artificial, but not unpleasant quality that European body care products usually don't have. If you know you know.

All in all I hoped for something a little more exciting, especially with that cute, nostalgia inducing name. I mean when was the last time you wore a mood ring? Most likely in simpler times when everything seemed a little brighter and more fun, right? I still like this though, it's clean, summery and nice. Just not mind blowing.

The Changling: Fun fruity, juicy blast that settles into a comforting fruity floral musk.
The notion of a mood ring brings back happy memories. Myself and everyone of my friends had one in the early 90s. These fun costume jewelry rings contained a mood stone, a thermochromic element in the liquid crystal, that would change colour based on your mood (well, to be scientific, the temperature of the finger of the wearer). Of course, we had lots of fun to see if our rings changed colour from green (relaxed) to purple (love) if we got within a meter of a crush! It reminds me of long satin skirts, tie dye tops and DM boots, and the scent that immediately came to mind was 4711, because the cool ‘hippie’ shop where we liked to hang out and bought our clothes and mood rings from, smelt like it was doused in Mäurer & Wirtz original cologne on an hourly basis and very much likely was.

So, I guess you can imagine my surprise when I saw that Parfumo lists a top note of Phlur’s Mood Ring as ‘fruit gummies’ - this is definitely not what I was expecting! So yeah, this opens with an absolute blast of fruity fun; pear, kiwi, peach, orange, lemon, apple - they’re all there, all mixed together. The orange blossom is already present in the opening too. It’s sweet but not cloying. It’s fresh, bright and vibrant.

I was expecting maybe something indolic as this settled, with jasmine and marigold listed as notes. But I don’t get that at all. I do get a slight sour, metallic greenness that reminds me of the cut stems and sap of a marigold flower in the middle. It’s already a rollercoaster of childhood nostalgia. From the sweet fruity start that reminds you of opening a packet of haribo, then the amber creeps through from the base and there’s a whiff of creamy orange, like a young summer’s day with an ice cream from the Poke Van in one hand and a Capri Sun in the other.

As this settles into the dry down, Phlur’s distinct DNA is present with lovely whiffs of musk and sandalwood. There’s a woody patchouli there but there’s defo sandalwood too, to my nose, and gently so. And from a bright, vibrant fruity opening, I’m now getting a musky floral with hints of fruit. It’s lovely here and stops the scent turning into an overly sweet gourmand or a body spray and keeps it very much smelling like a perfume.

I feel Phlur put a lot of love and effort into their scents, particularly their names. Like the way Missing Person definitely takes you on a gentle olfactory journey. And it’s very present here with Mood Ring too. Just like the fun jewellery of my early teens, this perfume is a changling that takes you on a nostalgic journey. Even hours after wearing it, a cold blast of AC air in the car and its back to fruity, playful vibrancy. A heat up from household cleaning in the warm summer and it’s a creamy, amber neroli. A settle on the sofa in the evening and it’s a comforting floral fruity musk. Sometimes there’s a whiff of apple, sometimes it’s pear or kiwi or orange. Sometimes there’s a beautiful woody loveliness. And again, like Vanilla Skin and Golden Rule, when I awake the next morning my skin smells like Missing Person.. clever little Phlurs!

This is a fun, playful, fruity floral that settles into a musky fruity accord, but also keeps your nose exercised throughout the day.

Colllection Status
This was the 5th sample in Phlur’s discovery set. It’s really lovely and fun, but not my vibe at all. But teenage me would’ve ate this up!

Bright, fruity, a little sour, pretty - but incredibly, incredibly faint. Barely detectable unless my nose is pressed to my skin.

I feel like I actually do detect marigolds in this. It is slightly more complex than a generic fruity scent, with detectable florals.

Fruity gummy rings. Fun and light, but still juvenile. Neon green is the right color for this packaging

Gummy bear scent wears off super quick. Idk what it is, maybe the patchouli, but it smells like a smoker's jacket to me.

Ohh, delicious! Anyone who loves fruity gummy bear scents with lychee, mango & co. will adore this. It has a slightly tangy note like apple rings.
