I think that all the fragrances in the combination so cleverly overlap, underpin, penetrate into each other and separate again. The pepper is probably "to blame" for ginger becoming "cold", and musky notes for amber becoming "tarry". Or shade-loving violets join the "sun-worshippers" peony.
