Walking past a...
... fruit and vegetable shop, I stop in front of the oranges and mandarins, and the citrus scent fills my nose. I close my eyes and feel as if I am in southern Italy where lemons, oranges, and mandarins grow. The sun is shining, and the scent of the sea tickles my nose. I open my eyes and am still standing in front of the shop in the middle of the gray city.

When applying this fragrance, the first notes that hit the nose are citrusy, spicy, woody, and floral, which are very pleasantly fresh. There’s also a hint of sweetness and green that is rounded off with mossy accords. The musk makes this scent powdery dry, giving it a masculine touch.

Unfortunately, the longevity and sillage are poor.

Here we have a masculine men's fragrance that I see as suitable for those around 30 years old. I can't imagine that younger guys would be into such a scent, but what do I know. It is wearable all year round, although it shows its full strength on warm and hot days. Personally, I would wear this fragrance during the day at the office, while exercising, at a meal, or simply in my free time. I also don’t see this scent being suitable for women as I find it too masculine for them.

Anyone who enjoys a fresh, citrusy, woody, powdery masculine scent would be right here if it hadn’t been discontinued. What a shame.

against the current
1974.
The year when Germany became World Champion in football, when Richard Nixon lost his head due to Watergate, and when the first IKEA came to Germany.
In which Alanis Morisette, Kate Moss, and Robbie Williams were born, and no one could have imagined the commotion that would one day erupt around these three little ones.
In the birth year of punk, people wore miniskirts and overalls, shocking colors on bib-like ties, permed waves, and sideburns that almost touched the mask-wearing ban.
The little dove was not yet a dove and set off with a school cone and backpack on the path to the seriousness of life.
And Roger & Gallet launched "Vetyver," a cologne that seems to have landed like a time traveler in the wrong year.

One can only speculate what motivated the French traditional house, which celebrated its 150th anniversary last year, to release such a fine yet down-to-earth fragrance as "Vetyver" in a year that can certainly be described as a bit loud.
It may be due to coincidence - "Vetyver" was simply ready and should not have been created for the drawer.
It may also be that they wanted to make a statement, swim against the current, or simply had a clientele in mind that appreciated a style that Queen Victoria already valued in 1864 and appointed Roger & Gallet as purveyors to the court - an honor that was not bestowed upon many non-British companies.
In any case, I cannot remember anyone in my personal circle in 1974 wearing "Vetyver" - but in the small town in the Sauerland where I grew up, "Tosca" and "Tabac" were anyway the undisputed top sellers...

I too had to first get through my 40th birthday to discover the charm of "Vetyver."
What starts off bergamot-neroli-citrusy like countless other colognes, without even a moment of prickling or fizzing, leaves the hesperidic-bright realms after just a few minutes and transforms into a woody-spicy scented summer garden, where garden pinks create a Mediterranean, very relaxed afternoon atmosphere alongside rosemary and other herbs.
I think I can sense a bit of cardamom, a hint of nutmeg, and a pinch of cinnamon, powerful yet subtle, not straying far from my skin.
Expansive scent auras are not Roger & Gallet's thing; they know how to differentiate finely between understatement and false modesty.
As I lie in my garden with closed eyes, letting the sun play with my bare toes, a light breeze rises and carries the scent of dry grasses to me, a bit of earth and freshly cut wood.
All this combines with the still very present spice notes to create an almost oriental scent impression that never feels overloaded - all components are too finely woven together, and the composition is too well balanced.
The only downside, in my opinion, is the naturally limited longevity of an Eau de Cologne: after a maximum of four hours, "Vetyver" has completely evaporated.

A truly wonderful, citrusy-green-fresh forest spice with a fine old-school touch, which unfortunately disappears as quickly as it's sprayed.

On a hot day, you stand in the cool forest. The treetops rustle and you enjoy the silence. A classic citrus-woody scent. It has style!
