Fairy Tales from Transylvania
Here's another amazing perfume from a house no one talks about. Carpathian Oud from Soivohle. Incredibly unique perfume. It is one of my most worn perfumes this year, not because it is easy to wear or among my favorites, but because I still try to wrap my head around it. I'd say it feels like an aromatic floral-chypre with a bracing, spicy top, and an earthy, mineral, musky, and oudy base. There is so much going on while being incredibly well-blended. You sense there are layers upon layers and many notes playing around yet the synergism is high so it all comes together as a perfect melange that is difficult to break apart. The perfume, as the name suggests, is inspired by Stoker's character, Dracula, and the Carpathian Basin flora. And it manages to capture both. The top and the heart showcase a beautiful amalgamation of flavors that I can associate with a Transylvanian countryside summer kitchen. A bracing opening with a strong laurel note, an ingredient that I feel is underused as it has such a beautiful and interesting flavor. Spicy, camphoraceous, and sweet. Cleverly complemented by clove. Some other aromatics and spices are present but difficult to pinpoint. I believe cumin is present, as I always get the "it smells like sweat" comments, and that always happens when "muggles" detect a heavy usage of cumin in perfumes. I am very tolerant of its flavor as I consume it frequently in my diet while also being one of my favorite notes in perfumery. I own many compositions that make heavy use of it. The heart uses some floral accords, from what I can tell, carnation and geranium. Again, a clever choice as both of them help to perpetuate the spicy-aromatic accords from the opening stage, carnation having a naturally spicy odor, and geranium a clove-like mentholated facet. The base uses Indian Oud but this is not an oud-heavy perfume, although the fermented, spicy facet of it does show up. There is a strong earthy and mineral-salty aroma as well, most likely from the oakmoss and the ambergris working together with other materials, as well as a civet-like furiness creeping in. A complex base layer with woody, earthy, and musky facets.
The first part of the perfume smells like a Transylvanian summer kitchen amid a field of wildflowers, whereas the base smells like a dungeon slowly inhabited by terrestrial elements. Therefore, I think Liz captured what she intended to in this perfume. A majestic example of first-class artisanal perfumery. Bold, strange, natural-smelling, different, yet blended to perfection and smooth all the way through.

Oud in your spice rack
On my skin I get a definite heavy dose of Laurel, but I'm also picking up a huge dose of clove or allspice and some pepper. The oud, when it does come out (it's kind of hide-and-seek) leans towards the indolic slightly fecal side. Oakmoss is there lending it's support, but very much skeletally. As this dries down, the orris becomes more apparent and there is a slight amberiness as well. I also get hints of caraway and cumin.

At first I wasn't a fan, but boy, those spicy notes are really rocking me!

Deepest Forest
The last one in the Soivohle hiking package that I want to comment on, and at the same time my personal highlight in the package.

An intense, heavy, spicy, balsamic blend greets me. Like Yatagan - whose description of the scent aligns quite well with my perception - I particularly notice the coniferous notes. Along with that, there is a lush mixture of spices. My "fear opponent" cumin seems to be present here as well, but fortunately it stays somewhat in the background.

As with "Cumberland Ti," I also draw a parallel to Slumberhouse here, this time to "Norne," even though the strong smoky impression found in "Carpathian Oud" is missing. But with both perfumes, you feel transported to a dense, archaic coniferous forest, without a specific location - Scandinavia, Siberia, Carpathians - it doesn't matter! A forest like from the old Grimm fairy tales - with wolves and bears, huge ancient trees, impassable and dangerous. I can also understand the associations with flying ointment, witch's brew, or remedies from alternative medicine. Such perfumes certainly have their charm for me, even though I am a strict supporter of conventional medicine.

Unlike Yatagan, I rate CO significantly higher; during the first test, I wavered between 9.0 and 9.5 because this perfume appeals to a dark, abyssal side of me. Due to the unfortunately not entirely ignorable cumin note during the second test, I remain at 9.0.

Witch's Salve or a Pig That Lays Eggs?
I have rarely looked forward to a sample as much as this one. The scent is hard for me to grasp; it's somehow everything, hardly fitting into a single category. The first impression that comes close? Mulled wine; but that's not even close to all. Clove is dominant, and then there is also something very strong that smells like red wine. Where could that come from? I don't know, but I like it. But wait! It doesn't smell like someone who has been drinking too much, just someone doused in wine. That would be far too simple. I can't really make out any Oud; maybe my nose is just too accustomed to Oud, but the other notes are so dominant that it only creates a warm background melody. Somehow, it's all a spice bomb, somewhat heavy and sweet, yet also green and herbal, somehow bitter and dry... so many facets are shown that I don't know whether to find it wonderful or very strange.

The scent definitely doesn't belong in the category that you spritz on for a date to feel good, to smell flattering and sexy, or something like that. It's all dark, complex, and not really friendly.

It reminds me of a witch's potion, a magical elixir; perhaps not necessarily from the good side of the Force. An interesting scent that could be fun in small amounts from time to time. For me, however, it's neither a proper Oud nor a fragrance that I would really want to wear to feel comfortable.

I can absolutely understand Yatagan's review.

Dark green, creamy, spicy, balsamic, medicinal - I can't quite pinpoint what's in there, but it's fascinating.
