a strange frozen moment
A little burlap sack of herbs, a little spell-bag, green, dry, peppery, sharp, that you tucked in the back of your freezer for safe-keeping. You forgot it entirely and found it freeze-dried and iced over hidden by a bag of peas years later and just in the corner beyond it, you see something strange. A shimmering-glimmering fissure, a glowing rift. What appears to be a portal in the very back of your frigidaire. Sea salt air wafts cleanly from it, cerulean waves dazzling in the far distance (is it ocean or alien horizon? unclear) and most peculiar, sandy pathy lined densely with something very much the shape of pine trees, fragrant boughs heavy with gleaming drifts of snow.

Smoky, gingery, green herbal elixir
Silphium demonstrates the endearingly nerdy interest of some artisans in repurposing old materials and traditions for modern ends; Antonio Gardoni, perfumer of Bogue, created Maai, for example, when he discovered a stash of barrels of vintage raw materials in a disused warehouse. In the case of Silphium, Stora Skuggan wanted to create the scent of Silphium, an ancient plant native to modern-day Libya that was used for medicinal purposes in Ancient Greece. Pedanius Dioscorides, in 70 BC, described Silphium as having a 'very healthy aroma', and it's possible that it was used as a contraceptive or even an aid to abortion.

The perfumers, probably working off the information that Silphium may have been related to fennel or asafetida, built an accord that smells like an ancient salve made from sweeping armfuls of culinary herbs and spices off the rack. But whatever medicinal pungency might have resulted from this is mitigated by the cheerful zing of freshly-grated ginger root, which sluices the dense herbal canopy with heat and sunshine. Indeed, layered with a fizzing incense note, Silphium smells more like a good mood than the inside of Hippocrates' medicine chest, and that's a good thing.

The clove and black pepper accents rev up the spicy and metallic aspects of the Silphium accord, making it feel half-clean, half-sweaty. Crucially, there's no amber or vanilla to blunt the spice, so things never get maudlin. It does, however, smell incredibly soapy in a happy, effervescent way. Although Silphium doesn't really remind me of any other perfume, I'm confident that anyone who loves the sooty, airy incense in Timbuktu (L'Artisan Parfumeur), the clovey resins of Eau Lente (Diptyque), and the luxurious soapiness of Castile (Penhaligon's) would also love this scent.

The Cure for Everything
"For years we searched for Silphium—the ancient plant that is said to have cured diseases, stirred desires, and enriched empires.

My colleagues called off the expedition. The grant money is gone and our reputations remain buried in the Libyan Desert. Why am I still here looking?

I leave the ruins of Cyrene and head up a hill towards trees. I stumble upon a stone relic that does not appear on any map. I circle it, sketching its shape into my journal.

And there it was. Silphium.

A thick stalk with crowns of yellow flowers and seeds like tiny hearts. The scent of ginger, cinnamon, and clove rose around me like incense in a church. I inhale deeply and my mind clears.

I was staring at the cure for everything.

I could take it and change the world, but we always destroy what saves us."

fisticuffs in a cathedral
Pure pepper on ginger violence. (Albeit poetic violence). This stuff is feisty, pugnacious. Beyond the spice there’s some churchy resins and oiled woods egging on the fight. There is also a definite mosquito repellant accord in the first few minutes, but more lemongrassy/herbal-remedy than 99% DEET. I wore it to work and was on edge the whole day, though my sinuses have never felt clearer. Probably makes a great anti-insomnia aid.

Mental Snapshot: What I’d wear if I wanted to fight someone. Like bare-knuckle brawl style, but somewhere classy – perhaps a mahogany-panelled library or an opera house. Fisticuffs in a cathedral.

tl;dr: aggro herbal

A panacea for whatever ails you
A mysterious poultice spread on the skin, green and fragrant with healing herbs. A steaming cup of clove tea steeps on your bedside table next to a charming bouquet of geranium. If the phrase "get well soon" could be distilled into a perfume, this is it. A panacea for whatever ails you - herbal, healing, and optimistic.

A dry and clean, yet gently leathery, spicy-woody Mid season fragrance, with a rather sharp and medicinal, citric spicy-floral opening.

Spicy and gingery up front, dries first resin/incense then leather and you hit a sweet spot between them that smells like old cathedral

How badly I wanted to like Silphium, but the ginger overpowers all to my nose and makes this overwhelmingly sour. Bug spray.

Medicinal herbs and incense, spicy and smoky without even a hint of sweetness. Amazing and refreshing, but you have to enjoy bitter scents.

Very sharp ginger-y notes. Nice when I'm in the mood for it but would not enjoy wearing it frequently.
