Broken candy...
I'm sorry, I just couldn't. The opening is a dreadful blast of sweet, synthetic crystallized weirdness with a tiny bit of iris in the background. Everything about this is just so sharp and biting. The drydown is a little better, but this is nowhere near natural or even smooth. Up close, I can't help but cringe my nose at that zingy, powdery nonsense; but after about an hour, the sillage can be rather pleasing. Just smell it from a distance!

I never would have bought a bottle if my gf didn't ask me to. Personally I can tolerate it, but never enjoy it. I don't know why this recieved so much hype a while back. Leather? Dream on...this is a sharp sugar headache in a bottle. If you want decent Zara frags go with Ambre Noble, Tone Indeterminee or even RWA. At least those have some character, rather than the ADHD you're going to get with this juice. Try before you buy!

Update: Oh it's Ultra Male alright. Nearly an exact copy. And after months of spraying, it's actually tolerable now - borderline enjoyable. I'm a little more impressed at how Zara managed such a good clone - one of their best - but I'm still not a big fan of it, nor JPG's original. It's just unfortunate that it's no longer availble, because compared to the vast majority of dross that the brand has come out with since... Gourmand Leather is a home run. Definitely recommended for girls aged 10-20!

The sweet smell of sensual leather
"His kiss tasted like the honey-bourbon he'd been sipping, and his skin smelled like sweet, delightful leather, and sensual man."

Oh man, Zara Gourmand Leather makes me think about that whenever I smell it! Well, I need to take back control of my imagination, and instead of letting it go wild on all the beautiful things that could happen, I should instead start discussing the scent! ;)

To begin with, I've hunted about Zara Gourmand Leather on the web, and I've got back the following outcomes:
"It has some similarities to Ultra Male by Jean Paul Gaultier."
"Nice opening, and yes, it does smell similar to JPG Ultra Male."
"This one is fantastic. I have to agree, and this is like Ultra Male."
"It truly does smell very, very similar to JPG Ultra Male (I'd say the top notes are almost identical)."
"This fragrance does remind me of JPG Ultra Male, and it is also almost identical "
"Yes, this resembles Ultra Male by JPG, almost the same smell..."
"This is 95% Ultra Male, as many have already said. "
"It is very close to Ultra Male, and I own both of those... "
"I have to agree, this is like Ultra Male, precisely like it. "

Should I believe the hype? Let's look at the evidence. I sprayed Zara Gourmand Leather on one hand and JPG UM on the other and compared side by side. First things first, the cologne is inspired by the recent trend for fruity gourmand male fragrances and shares specific characteristics with other contemporaries, comprising a surplus of aromatic, lavender. Amber notes it's a modern take on the Amber Oriental Fougère family.

The flight takes off with a very agreeable citrus-mentholated accord, which lasts roughly half an hour. The opening is very similar, on a burst of enticing fruit notes over a backdrop of warmly aromatic lavender and fresh mint. However, the kind of citrus fruit listed is different.

The scents continue with a fainting citrus note and an aromatic intense clary sage and lavender combo that adds a dark aspect to both. At this stage, in Zara Gourmand Leather, a sweet and indulging iris note becomes dominant. The vibe is still alike; however, the powdery and buttery tone keeps the two apart for nearly one hour.

The dry down reveals a solid and lovable gourmand combo of tonka and leather that lasts a lot of time, 5 to 6 hours with one good spray on the back of my hand. The warm interlude slowly evaporates to reveal the mouthwatering and sweet gourmand notes of vanilla.
Yet both dry down powdery, creamy, animal, musky, and dirty. Vanilla and tonka are dominant and rule the oriental facet of the amber base, which is warm, intoxicating, and particularly addictive.

Conclusively, Zara GL is a tremendous uncanny clone of JPG UM, and they are surprisingly similar at 99.999% with a powdery dominant note that distinguishes the former. Ideal for daily and nightly wear, fabulous for office thanks to moderate yet inoffensive sillage but colossal longevity. The best season is cold weather, from late muggy fall until early sparkling spring. Thanks to its strikingly amber and gourmand accords, it's something that performs well in a seductive fire-lit environment or the frosty night air.

Albeit somebody compares Zara GL to Armani Code Profumo, nor do I. To my nose, they have nothing in common, at any stage of the development, two scents apart.

Whispers of Leather and Enigmatic Sweetness
I'd heard some really good things about this perfume, so I decided to head to Zara to pick it up. After spending a few minutes searching the perfume section, I was told that it was sold out. Apparently, it was such a hit that it was gone from most stores. But there was still hope - I was informed that a store about half an hour away might have a bottle left.

So, off I went. After a bit of a drive, I finally arrived at the other store. Turns out they did have the last bottle, but it wasn't even out on the shelves. Some guy had to go fetch it from the back. He looked a bit angry, probably because he had wanted it for himself.

Bottle:
I usually don't have high expectations for fragrances that cost 20 euros, but to be honest, Zara managed to underwhelmed me with the tilted text on the bottle. Otherwise, it gets the job done. The atomizer lets you half-spray it, which I usually like and especially appreciate with a fragrance that has become my choice for "unimportant night-out" situations.

Scent:
It opens with a very strong and relatively nice iris note, which is just a little too powdery, but well accompanied by a leathery note. The leathery note brings to mind chrome-tanned leather sneakers. The combination of iris and leather is nothing new, but it works well this time too.
So far, so good. One would think it's great, even after noticing the citrus accord hiding behind the iris. The combination is vibrant, yet maybe a little soapy at times. But then the sweetness kicks in—an extremely strong, unnatural type of sweetness. It's the kind of sweetness that a bug-eating plant would emit to lure in, confuse, and ultimately make its prey surrender. The sweetness is almost sickening and absolutely soulless. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate it. I just can't really place it in my head. It's somewhat gourmandy, but not tonka bean; it's something synthetic. The scent is rather linear and doesn't change much over time. If anything, the leather and sweetness remain the most dominant notes.

Comparison:
In our olfactory lineup, we have three rivals.
J.P.G. Ultra Male:
As anticipated, Ultra Male is better. However, personally, I prefer this Zara budget beast over it.
Afnan 9pm:
It should be a fair comparison, given how both 9pm and G.L. are considered Ultra Male homages and the prices are similar, but I really, really disliked 9pm and do like the Zara fragrance.
And lastly, Valentino Uomo Intense (new version):
I have noticed similarities when sniffing this Valentino fragrance, which is no wonder because the formula is also similar on paper. However, Valentino is a lot more refined and complex.

Performance:
It's strong enough. People will notice it. I'd say it has a 1-meter sillage for the first 3-4 hours, half a meter for the next 2 hours, ultimately demanding a rather intimate proximity for the final 2 hours.

Use Case:
This fragrance seems to resonate with warmer climates, but it feels somewhat discordant in the winter's chill. It might be overbearing in the peak of summer. So, spring or autumn evenings could be the perfect stage for this scent, especially for an al fresco dinner with friends or a dance party.

7/10

Great Value
Gourmand Leather by Zara is a clone Ultra Male by Jean Paul Gaultier. And it is strikingly similar. However there is a difference in the opening of both. Gourmand Leather is lacking the peach note of Ultra Male. As it dries down they become more and more similar. Longevity of about 12 hours on me. Lasts a long time on clothes also. I would say that is has good projection for about 2-3 hours. Well worth the price. I picked this up for €10 for 150ml in the winter sales (bought two). So keep a look out for this during the sales, incredible value if you get it at a crazy price like that.

Yummy!
Though I'm not a fan of sweet perfumes, I love this one and Zara 9.0. They smell so good both! This one is really leathery. And sweet. And balsamic/camphory. Awesome smell! :D Very well blended giving the impression of a more expensive perfume. Nice presentation package, beautiful bottle. Huge longevity! I have in front of me a test blotter with GL and still smell it after more than 48 hours. On clothes I smell it after more than 30 hours. Unfortunately the sillage is not so awesome, but good enough. It projects fine/soft waves of aroma even after 4 hours. I bought it for ~10 euros and for this price it's great!

Sickeningly sweet opening, 1 Million-ish, but gorgeous in the drydown. The scent is inspired by Code Profumo and especially by Ultra Male.

Ultra Male without pear and a worse performance. Also slightly less feminine.
Projects well in the first hour then becomes a skin scent.
