The Neighborhood at Its Best

Menthol freshness in the neighborhood?! Is that fig, bergamot, and orange? Hm, maybe it was one spray too many on the back of my hand. The top note remains citrus-fresh, but slowly a fruity-floral note begins to shine through in the fragrance.

After the top note, the scent changes; less flattering nuances creep in, at least in relation to the initial freshness. Perhaps the white oleander is starting to make its presence known. However, this citrus-aquatic freshness still dominates in the heart note. It really seems to be a question of dosage, as the floral-sweet note just doesn't come through properly here; maybe it's also due to my skin.

In the base note, a really delicious fruity character has settled in, flanked by a hint of citrus notes and musk. This fragrance truly represents the neighborhood at its very best. For me, the neighborhood is a very harmonious, balanced, and appealing everyday scent for summer. A really successful composition without any rough edges. Clearly a must-have fragrance for the next visit to St. Pauli.

On the Reeperbahn…

Children should be introduced to real life in due time, but gently. That’s why I took my daughter to the Reeperbahn. To avoid rushing the introduction, I chose the Reeperbahn in the quaint Kappeln on the Schlei, and it was also late morning.

Joking aside, the child had already walked along the “real” Reeperbahn during a school trip and had afterwards reported, giggling shyly, about the unusual products in the shop windows…

Now finally to the scent:

Creamy-green fig, initially garnished with citrus fruit, quickly develops a Campino fruit candy attitude. Along with that, there’s a slightly fuzzy quality (fuzzy-fungal - that’s certainly the musk already!), which reminds me of kiwi skin. I suspect the fig is a concoction of a rosy-fruity general fruit and something green-rough, plant-juicy; I’m guessing a bit of black currant leaf green. Which is all no harm.

Admittedly, I can’t remember the smell of the white oleander I once had. To have a well-rounded impression of the scent, I don’t need it anyway. There’s no component “left over” for me - because by late morning, a softly creamed fresh sour green remains, reliably carrying me through a slightly cooler summer day.

By the afternoon, the chemical framework behind the freshness reveals itself in all its glory. Hedione, Helional, and ISO all seem perceptible to me. The fig theme has become a shadow of its former self. The scent doesn’t smell bad because of this, just rather like perhaps a harmless women’s deodorant.

What all this has to do with the “Kiez” remains unclear to me. Well, the partygoers heading there are probably primarily chasing an illusion staged by shrewd businessmen to feel somehow “naughty.” The most daring thing about the scent, in any case, is that it is wrapped in black cardboard, unlike the three white boxed colleagues.

Moreover, ‘Kiez’ is the one among the four Hamburg scents that shows the greatest drop in tension towards the end. The other three maintain their solid level really well throughout the day. It’s a shame that the last in the series… well, now dances to the same tune; actually, I wanted to praise the staying power of the Acqua di Hamburg again today.

Nevertheless, it should be acknowledged again for the others here.

Conclusion for the series: With this provider, the customer receives decent fragrance at a reasonable price. Compared to the tourist trap brew ‘Aqua Wissemara’ (85 euros for 30ml!) from Wismar, the Hamburg scents clearly have the edge.

Hamburg my Pearl

The headline had to be that :-) As a proud Hamburger, I had to test or buy this line. Hamburg is my home, and I feel at home here. Of course, it was a given that I would test the brand Acqua di Hamburg. I came across this brand through Parfumo, as the 4 fragrances were listed as a new release. I wasn't familiar with the brand. Then I found the homepage of this brand through Google. AdH is a brand created by a couple along with a perfumer. It is inspired by the brand Acqua di Parma, aiming to give Hamburg its own fragrance. Naturally, it is not as serious as the traditional AdP line. My expectations weren't that high either, partly due to the fair prices. Not cheap, but accessible to everyone. 38 euros for 50ml. The concept seems to be aimed more at Hamburg residents and their fans.
Four fragrances have been released: Alster, Classic (Rathaus), Hafen, and this one, Kiez. Even though all four deal with their respective themes, in my opinion, they don't have much to do with the theme. When I think of Kiez as a Hamburger, something completely different comes to mind than this fragrance. Quite the opposite. But I must say: All four are pleasant and easy to wear.
The brand seems to be small, but I find that charming. I ordered all four, and the package arrived quickly with a handwritten label and Christmas tape. Very nice.

Now specifically about the fragrance Kiez: The scent is very straightforward and pleasant from the start. What adds to it is that the fragrance has little development. No top-heart-base, but rather kept monotonous, which I don't always find bad. Similar to the brand name, they probably drew inspiration from Fico di Amalfi. The fig note is very strong here and resembles its twin. In addition, there is a plant-like green and pleasant note that harmonizes very well with the fig. In the background, citrus-fruity notes are present. It smells very Mediterranean and reminds one of a southern flair. It smells high-quality. Lastly, there's a dose of musk. A harmonious creation that strongly reminds me of Fico di Amalfi. It didn't completely convince me due to moderate performance, especially at this price. Here you get a similarly good fragrance at a fair price.
The performance is OK. It is an EdP, and for a fresh scent, the performance is decent.

Not a must-have for non-Hamburgers and not a typical Kiez fragrance, yet I do not regret this purchase.
