Montale / Bakhoor
A unique, twisted and niche WORK.
For me, it is less incense (I rather don't associate it with classic incense, but rather with some smoke ... something burnt, but it is difficult for me to find any associations).
Once upon a time, someone ... I think when describing Dark Aoud (Montale) wrote about railway sleepers, lubricants, a workshop - and for me this is the smell.
Wooden (of various types of wood) railway sleepers, a wooden workshop smelling of grease, wooden blocks under the wheels and chassis, a slightly smoky and veeery dry smell (very well describing the word 'dry' as Zanzibar37 wrote).
To sum up - if you like such fragrances, including Dark Aoud (Montale), Kabul (Montale), Black Tourmaline (Olivier Durbano) - it's worth trying, and whether to have ... it's a personal matter, because it's not a fancy guy.
If I had to compare it to something that is closest in smell, in my opinion: Dark Aoud and Kabul.
A niche with a capital N.

Raw and wild!
Montale refers to one of its new 2018 fragrance creations as raw and wild.

And that captures it, unfortunately especially at the beginning, completely from my perspective.

Because I really don’t know how to describe this top note. While I was left somewhat perplexed, my daughters commented something along the lines of, "Wow, you smell terrible" or "Eww, that’s really disgusting." Well, I am still searching for the right words, as the opening is so sharp (in the literal sense) that it takes your breath away. Domestos? It has a certain resemblance. Vinegar cleaner? No, much more aggressive, somehow caustic. Mentally back in chemistry class 30 years ago... Nitric acid??? Whatever, the scent was on my skin, so there was no changing it anyway. Mentally checked off. Even after 15-20 minutes, that piercing, unpleasant sensation remains.

And then, after about an hour, the surprise. The scent becomes almost mild compared to the opening. The heart note reveals resins and woods; I would even go so far as to suspect oriental oils - and not even as roughly as I would have expected after the beginning.

And when the whole story arrives at the base note after another hour, we have here a strongly oriental, spicy-smoky-woody representative of its kind. But in a remarkably fine manner that has surprised me incredibly positively.

Sillage: Thank goodness, after half an hour it decreases significantly, while the longevity is relatively good. The bottle is okay, fitting for the scent, in my opinion.

Conclusion: I advise against a blind purchase. Maybe there are people who find the opening somehow attractive; I am not one of them. I have never tested a perfume that comes across as so ambivalent. While I am completely convinced by the base note, the top note almost knocked me out. And that’s exactly why Bakhoor will not find a place in my collection.
0 points for the top note, 6 for the heart note, and 9 for the base note. That makes, according to Adam Riese and Eva Klein, 5. It’s a pity really; without that sting at the beginning, something really good could have come out of it. But as they say, tastes differ - give it a try - I’m curious about further comments.

A fragrant incense offering with sandalwood, oud, flowers, and surely more
For Montale, it's rather subtle
Linear and pleasant to smell!

Paddling through the Amazon in a canoe. Occasionally, a rush along the shore. Indigenous people share stories. Damp jungle wood and cool, earthy vetiver.

Reminds me a lot of Encre Noire in the top notes, so it should contain plenty of vetiver or vetiveryl acetate.

Top: Chaotic spice-synthetic
Middle: Okay. Less synthetic, more licorice and smoke
Middle/End: Everything nuanced with leather
P/L & H/S okay

strong, spicy woody scent with a hint of leather - you don't smell this every day - still very wearable, but not for little boys. ;)
