Ship Ahoy!
My passion for perfumes has introduced me to a special genre, and I am very glad to have made this acquaintance. Bay Rum, mostly found in aftershave or cologne concentration and sold in splash bottles, has its origins in the Caribbean, first produced on Saint Thomas, part of the American Virgin Islands. The main components were and are rum, as well as West Indian bay leaves, whose distilled oil evokes the classic clove scent.

Virgin Island Bay Rum is an aftershave lotion from the originally French, now American traditional brand Pinaud Clubman. Practically available in every drugstore in the USA, in Germany one relies on online ordering. Of the three Bay Rum lotions that I bought blindly, this one is by far the most brilliant. After the first "splash," a cloud of clove spice greets you, unlike anything else. For many, this might be unpleasant, but for me, it’s just right. Once the clove scent calms down a bit, a classic spice blend emerges that you simply know, without exactly knowing where it comes from, let alone which spices it consists of. Fans of spicy, masculine scents will be thrilled. Besides the brilliant fragrance, the nourishing and refreshing effect after shaving should not be overlooked. It burns fiercely upon application, disinfects, cools even though there is no menthol, and refreshes strangely, despite the heaviness of the scent. I feel like a sailor in the Caribbean, with a bottle of rum in one arm and a voluptuous Caribbean beauty in the other!

Longevity in aftershave concentration is around 5 hours, a good base for other spicy scents in EdT or EdC concentration, and pleasant sillage. Unfortunately, it comes in a plastic bottle, but it's good for on-the-go, the affordable price and great scent speak for a purchase recommendation!

Aftershave Journey Part 5: Rum of Jack Sparrow Meets Laurels of Caesar
Yes, Johnny Depp is associated with Dior Sauvage - but the character Jack Sparrow correction: Captain Jack Sparrow is likely to smell like this on the Black Pearl - and Julius Caesar probably still graciously donated his laurels, so one can nicely align oneself with this aftershave and celebrate a cultural experience.

However, the top note is so strong that it became too intense for my parents, who suggested trying it on the weekend rather than in the morning, considering prejudices in the office - at least when I applied the aftershave, it burned strongly on the shaved or better written, on the scraped areas, but it decreases significantly and the whole thing absorbs beautifully into your skin like a cream.

The initially strong scent balances itself out and harmonizes the fragrance profile, pleasantly and especially the herbs adorn the overall picture, the rum fades nicely - it becomes subtler and also pleasant.

Will I use it in everyday life? First, I’ll get used to it in the afternoons...

The plastic bottle may not be for everyone, yet it serves its purpose and quite honestly - it has something: courage to be down-to-earth with character - that’s how I would interpret it for myself!

Thank you for reading - until the next aftershave journey!

Pirates and Tar Coats
That's what pirates wear when they have to walk the plank and every other tar coat on the seven seas. I wear it when I long for the surf and a challenge. For me, they are sailors from long ago, calling out to me and singing the song of the dead man's chest and the bottle full of rum that comes to mind when I give a proper "swig" into my palm to give the shave its final touch and finish it off.
Yes, the longevity is certainly not at the forefront, but for me, the scent remains soft and diminishing until the evening. The projection is rather "meh," but it is an aftershave cologne and not a perfume.
And before anyone gets upset: Yes, the bottle (flacon doesn't quite fit here) is made of plastic and there's nothing valuable about it. But given the low price and the nostalgia factor, that's perfectly fine.
About the scent:
A distinct bay leaf note and a bit of harsh rum, refreshing upon application and for a few minutes afterward. The scent notes remain, but the freshness fades, everything becomes rounder and plays better together.
There's not much care included here; other aftershaves do that better. Here, alongside the disinfecting effect of the alcohol, clear emphasis was placed on the scent.
Complex and playful or otherwise carefully balanced? Uh.... Nope.
Here we have bay leaf and rum, a hint of a warm beach in the late afternoon, and a small hope for cooling down when the sun has set. But that’s precisely what gives charm to this composition rightly called "old school." A balmy summer evening on the terrace of a seaside restaurant somewhere in the south, seafood was served, and now one sits slightly reclined on somewhat uncomfortable fabric-covered chairs, enjoying the breeze coming from the sea while the digestif is served and the cicadas chirp.
You can tell this is for dreamers who are still down-to-earth and can steer a clear course even on swaying decks; at least, that image might be conveyed to others, which is quite nice....

After Shave in strong/spicy with a smoky note
Thanks to YouTube, I became aware of this AS. In my opinion, it is quite special and difficult to compare with other AS. Not in the sense of better or worse, but in the sense of different.
This AS is quite heavy from the start, strong, properly spicy, and smoky. Not a wallflower. Quite dominant. It could be (a bit) too much for some. However, over time it becomes milder and more subtle. Still well-present, but not as strong anymore. I wouldn't want to use this AS every day; it's a bit too loud for me. Besides, I also enjoy variety. The caring properties are good to very good. Even though it is an AS, the longevity could still be a bit better/longer.
Conclusion
A "loud" AS, special and intense. I find it good to very good. If you want a different AS, why not?

A King Among Bay Rum Aftershaves
The Pinaud aftershaves are classics. They enjoy a high reputation in the wet shaving community due to their timeless scents and very good price-performance ratio.
The Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum is one of the best representatives of the Bay Rum fragrances that are popular in barber shops around the world.
The bottle is simple, made of plastic, but functional. The aftershave has a strong alcohol kick and its essential oils cause hyperemia of the skin with the accompanying feeling of warmth. The scent itself is bitter yet sweet, masculine, spicy, long-lasting, intense, sometimes too intense. It should be tried by anyone who shaves.

A cinnamon and spice concoction much in the style of the 1970s. Difficult to pull off.

Strangely fascinating this mix of rum and bay leaf. Herbal, slightly medicinal, not the rum but that doesn't really matter anyway ;)

This is how Bay Rum should smell: spicy, herbal, strong, distinctive, masculine: just like allspice. Men used to wear it in their pomaded hair!

The past can be so beautiful:
Herb-spicy, I smell clove, some allspice, masculine, distinct, classic but not old-fashioned. Great!

Rum of Jack Sparrow meets Caesar's laurels, initially a strong burn but quickly fades and absorbs like a cream into freshly shaved skin.

Classic, masculine-spicy - if you don't like allspice, you should keep your distance. Very short longevity. Incredibly cheap. Bottle made of plastic. Unfortunately.

Spicy pimento aftershave with a lot of alcohol and a woody finish. It burns not just on the skin, but also in the nose.

Brutal-rustic splash. Rum and bay leaf with a punch and typical aftershave short longevity - thankfully. I like it!
