Italian Summer

After I have worn this fragrance numerous times, I finally have to write a review about it. It is just that this scent is difficult to describe. So many notes mingle in an exquisite way. What is the attraction? First of all, a clear and crisp feeling that turns into a flower field. Full and well crafted, no single note stands out.

The presentation with the busts looks expensive, the price is high, but this scent really smells expensive. Rare.

I can see myself going out with it in full gala to a festive event, or use it at home and it will be uplifting, with its beautiful and unexpected notes. So, I was waiting for the bus, and the gentle breeze of it wafted to other people in the queue, and heads turned in wonderment. Nice to have something so classy.

The sillage is present but not disturbing. Longevity is good. The scent mellows and becomes more subtle, no drastic undertones in the basenotes.

Voila. That's it. One of my favorites, reached for again and again.

An overdone fruity floral with strong aldehydic tones.

Many of our friends here are fans of Parfums MDCI, particularly its chypre/fougere male fragrances like Chypre Palatin and Invasion Barbare. The samples I got from MDCI are the fruity floral scents, marked as womens’ fragrances. These don’t work for me at all.

Yesterday, I tested a vial of Parfums MDCI Vepres Siciliennes that I got from Jovoy. It is a formulaic fruity floral that reminds you of many women’s fragrances from a bygone era. Heavy on aldehydes, it has every conceivable fruit and flower in it. As every stage is a blend of many similar notes, listing and discussing them serves no purpose. I assume that all the listed notes are there in the opening, middle and end. But I cannot identify them when I am being pummeled by so many at the same time. They are nice, but too generic for my tastes. The base notes and the dry down are the best part. Vepres Siciliennes shows excellent performance and longevity, which is a curse if you don’t like it.

I do not want to speak of ill of Vepres Siciliennes because I believe that it will work for many, but not for me. If you love aldehydic fruity florals with osmanthus, peach, plum etc, you should test it. Its sister La Belle Helene has a similar personality, but I found it harder to tolerate its pear and aldehyde combination.

Vepres Siciliennes - a novelty in fragrance history?

The Chypre, which symbolizes the scents of the South and its landscapes, traditionally consists of a chord of bergamot, labdanum, galbanum, oakmoss, and patchouli.

The perfumer knows two types of Chypre:

The floral Chypre (example Coco Mademoiselle) weaves the Chypre ingredients with classic notes like rose, jasmine, or lily of the valley.

The fruity Chypre (example Mitsouko) uses fruit notes such as peach, apricot, strawberry, and lychee for rounding.

When a Chypre is garnished with spices or resins, the bridge to the oriental scent is established.

But what is Vepres Siciliennes?

It contains fruits, flowers, and many gourmand notes like butter toffee, velvety coconut, and I recognize Sicilian almond pastries.

Is Vepres Siciliennes a new gourmand Chypre? Or a fruity Chypre with gourmand notes?

Since I know Sicily and its culinary delights from several trips, I find the translated title of the fragrance "Sicilian Delicacies" justified.

In my mind's eye, I sit on a piazza in Taormina overlooking the majestic peak of Mount Etna. Lemon and orange trees are blooming everywhere. Their leafy green provides a cool shade.

A fruit vendor with peaches, apricots, plums, and raspberries passes by with his small three-wheeled vehicle. The scent of his goods mixes with my vanilla ice cream, which has a hint of cardamom added. I bite into my almond cookie.

A woman wearing a violet perfume walks by and smiles at me. Her scent lingers with me for quite a while, and in my mouth, it tastes slightly soapy and of violets. The soapiness blends with creamy melted butter toffee that has a hint of herbs and moss.

I breathe in, as the clear fruity air of the South mixes with a light African breeze carrying new delicacies and spices. This wind is just a gentle dry breath, ensuring that I do not sink into the delights and come back down to earth.

Romantic Vacations in Sicily

Heaven is a place on Earth, someone sang in my youth... It could be that it’s somewhere in Sicily!
I would never have tested Vêpres Siciliennes if a generous donor hadn’t given me a huge sample of it, because the fruits and many other bold ingredients listed had rather put me off, and the price didn’t help either.
But Vêpres Siciliennes finds the narrow balance between sweet and fresh, between floral and gourmand, and as others have already mentioned, it is a kind of trendsetter among modern chypres. What? Sounds paradoxical?
But it isn’t. The scent remains delightfully fruity throughout its entire development with a gourmand base, which means in plain English: A little treat!
The top note is completely Italian-green with minimal fruitiness, the heart note has something fluffy-gourmand about it, but without drifting into heaviness or sweetness. However, underpinning and making itself known as a sillage is once again a pastry note, a kind of lemon meringue.
Overall, a heavenly fragrance, so balanced, so beautiful, so unobtrusive!

A master who played with these ingredients until Vêpres Siciliennes came out.

If there ever was a romantic Italian, then it was
Vêpres Siciliennes!

Love and Hope Lost in a Labyrinth

I would like to share my experiences with this fragrance, as it reminds me of a very special person I met abroad.
Although she lives on another continent, when I think of her, Vepres comes to my nose and I am truly delighted and fascinated by this scent.

I met the young lady at a dinner with business partners. She seemed cool and distant to me, but she appeared to be someone who knows what she wants in life. What could be more beautiful than steadfastness in women?
When I started talking to her, I perceived the fragrance. Now I no longer thought of the cool young lady; she only seemed that way... Because the scent conveys something different. It is very sweet, intense, and accommodating. As if it were screaming towards the male gender, saying: "Suck me in and breathe deeply!"
The fragrance reminded me of a flower festival, where young women were enjoying themselves and were hardly aware of their limits. On one side, virginal; on the other hand, demonic. The scent has depth and embodies a true lady who can be sweet but also tough.
What I liked best was the creamy touch of this perfume. Especially the coconut and vanilla have stayed deeply in my memory and in my nose. Incredible - how good the woman smelled!

Unfortunately, I cannot say how the entire pyramid develops, as I only ever smelled it like this - creamy, vanillic with a hint of sweet coconut. Only when it got tough did you smell the clove and a hint of musk, sprinkled with lemon, but that was when the scent slowly but beautifully departed from her skin.

I personally enjoyed talking to her, and every hug from her was a fragrant bliss! Deeply inhaled, transported into a labyrinth full of love and hope - where there is no exit for anyone!

All in all, a very beautiful, noble fragrance that transforms beautifully and takes a long time to dissipate. Shyness is not known to this perfume. It conveys something good, something beautiful, simply feminine. But if you delve deep into the soul of the perfume, perhaps an intriguer will emerge?
Certainly, the young lady I knew had a lot going on behind the scenes.

With this perfume, one should not be lulled into a false sense of security and think the wearer is hopelessly romantic. Beware: misconceptions are pre-programmed!
