The Enchanted Garden...
In my grandmother's garden, one could easily get lost; there were the large meadows, the goldfish pond, rhododendron bushes, the old arbor, chestnut trees, an almost hollow oak that a child could slip into - it was a paradise for playing hide and seek, cops and robbers in the summer, or simply lying in the grass and forgetting the time while a woolly sheep chewed its cud nearby. Sometimes, one would be surprised by a sudden downpour, fleeing to the arbor and watching the spectacle from there. Afterwards, the air smelled of leaves, steaming earth, and freshly mown, sweet grass. I just have to close my eyes, and I'm back there, in that peaceful place where time seemed to stand still, a dreamlike phenomenon that surely belongs irretrievably to childhood...
British Grassland captures all of this for me. I never thought it could be so authentically possible, and I honestly shed a tear. Thank you, dear Floyd, for the opportunity to take this journey into the past.

The Glow of Wet Grasses
As a child, the rain smelled much more intense, you ran wild through the tall grasses, the coarse stems and sweet rushes, you whistled on their damp blades like marmots in the meadows, which smelled of earth and mild mints, glowing under the rainbow, their plant juices shining in brilliant green. And everything in between was geosmin. The ground was soft, a marshy sponge, with every step you sank in, jumped into the puddles in the mosses, tripped over pearlescent roots, the meadow was everywhere on your pants along with the bushes, the weeds, the clay, which could soon stand on their own. Then you paused for a moment, looked at the mist in the distance, rising from the hazy peat of the moors, cool and silver sweeping across the land.

Julia Asenbaum's Fragrantarium in Vienna creates realistic olfactory representations of nature: "I have been working on this idea since I was 15. I made countless experiments and studied plant science just to find a way to capture scents as they are in nature," she writes. On her homepage, you can also watch a video clip for each of her fragrances, a photorealistic scent cinema, so to speak. She recommends spraying the scent on the pillow before going to bed, watching the clip, and then falling asleep in that environment.

"British Grassland" smells so olfactorily real, so distinct, that the intensity truly reminds me of the more sensitive sense of smell from childhood. This is how a wet meadow smelled after the rain, as the first rays of sunshine illuminated everything and the scents of plants and earth began to form mist. The interplay of the different grass aromas, the sour sedge grass, the rather coarse meadow grass, the sweeter rush, and the fresh green bog myrtle are sharpened in the top notes by water mint and create an almost hyper-realistic image with the damp earthy mosses and ferns, so sharp that it feels like you still have wet eyes. Through this, one can also recognize in the distance the more spicy-damp than smoky peat notes in cool silver-green mists. The childhood memory is like a brief, bright flashback, quickly becoming tangible and lingering there for a few hours.

The child sat there quietly like a mouse, looking around, and all around was a great, deep silence.
