Where This Flower Blooms

As an avid floral lover, there are definitely some flowers out there that I can’t say I love. Funny enough, magnolia is one of them, or so I thought…

French Waltz is a fresh floral fragrance with magnolia at its very core. It also has an aquatic air to it that makes it feel very smooth and crisp, like the cool flowing water in a river. Very much a spa-type scent, with no heaviness, intense sweetness, or loudness. I wouldn’t describe it as a “fresh out the shower scent” because the musk + lily of the valley do provide a touch of “dirtiness” (not sure if that’s the right word, but something is a bit “off axis” I’d say), and keep the scent from being another boring and basic floral. While it’s not loud, it is very strong. Sillage and longevity are stupendously long, and the scent will be left behind on your clothes for some few days. It’s one of my favorite scents ever and you wouldn’t think this was a celebrity fragrance if you smelled it. It has a niche-like quality/complexity to it without being too complicated and hard to understand/wear.

You must be a Tyler, The Creator fan to appreciate this fragrance. Just kidding but also, not really. Lowkey-highkey (I’m annoying, I know LOL), I think this fragrance is a great representation of Ty’s growth as an artist and as a person. He is not afraid to speak his mind, step to his own beat, and be comfortable within himself. The scent truly embodies neutrality in all forms: gender, sexuality, etc. I’ve watched him grow up from when he was in Golf Wang to the being that he is now, and his continuous blossoming is truly something to admire.

The search has come to an end

First a little background to better understand my opinion:
I have been looking for a "signature" fragrance for a few years now. I've already tried my way through many designer and niche fragrances. The results were - in addition to a small hole in my bank balance - many bottles that were not even used 2/3 of the time and a lot of experience with most fragrances.
In my search, it was important to me to find a fragrance that I could easily wear for any occasion and at any time of day or year. The only fragrance I have used more than 200ml of over the years was YSL's "Y Le Parfum", which met these criteria quite well, but over time it became too boring or not unique enough for me.
Because good performance was also very important to me, I tended to prefer sweeter fragrances and always as high a proportion of perfume oil as possible, i.e. eau de parfums and usually even parfums/extrait de parfums. In this respect, however, it became increasingly clear to me that the suitability for everyday use suffers because such high concentrations are simply too intrusive for school, university, the office or similar working environments. My desired fragrance should therefore perhaps go a little more in the fresh direction.
So I recently decided to look around for more floral fragrances to try and meet my requirements. I've never had a problem with "unisex" perfumes, which was also practical here, as many floral fragrances automatically get this label or are categorized directly in the feminine direction.
after some research, "Reflection Man" by Amouage was a hot candidate, but it was a little too powdery and not fresh enough for me. Then, by chance, I discovered a 10ml bottle of "french waltz" at a friend's house. At first glance, it was a great combination of fresh, floral and even slightly sweet notes. I had to get that one too! I had to swallow a little at the price... the equivalent of almost 190€ for 100ml. Of course, I also searched for other reviews etc., only to find that this fragrance is totally unknown even in the perfume scene. For me, however, this was somehow also a plus, because I wanted something unique.

So now to the review itself:
With repeated wear, my impression of the fragrance directions/notes was confirmed. Very floral/floral and fresh/sweet. I also liked the latter because I had been thinking in the "fresh" and "sweet" pigeonholes for a long time and I had wanted the combination of the two but didn't think it was quite achievable. It's definitely a unisex fragrance, so it's not for anyone who needs to define themselves by the masculinity of their perfume. However, the musky, woody base, which works incredibly well with the floral heart note, makes it very wearable as a man.
The notes naturally make the fragrance a little more summery or suitable for the warmer seasons. However, due to the (relatively strong for the freshness of the fragrance) presence, it is definitely wearable in fall and winter.
For the freshness of the fragrance, I find the durability and performance very good. Of course, the fragrance doesn't stick to the skin for 16 hours or longer like some sweeter perfumes manage, but with just one spray per side on the neck in the morning, it is still noticeable in the evening (even for myself). so 10 hours, if not a little more, is definitely possible - at least on my skin - even if the fragrance naturally becomes a little less "enveloping" after 6-7 hours.
The sillage is never too intrusive and yet the perfume manages to be present for a long time. Accordingly, it is also suitable for the work environment.
The bottle is a matter of taste. I personally find others more beautiful/chic, but the design also somehow suits the light playfulness of the fragrance.
Most (of the very few) compromises "french waltz" has to make in terms of value for money. Even if I find the price acceptable, not everyone will be happy with almost 190€ for a... yes, a designer perfume.
To summarize, in my opinion, this fragrance is unique in its DNA and yet very suitable for the masses. Even though I am not a fan of measuring perfumes by the number of compliments they receive, I found it very striking how often I was approached about this fragrance. So I seem to have found my long-awaited "signature fragrance"!

Love her to bits! Very fresh & unisex summer/spring scent. Great longevity. Adore the opening mandarin note + powdery dry-down.
