A vanilla dream !
I am the lucky owner of this beauty and unfortunately before getting my perfume I have read a few "reviews" about it on Fragrantica or Parfumo .. of course they are mainly unfavorable.

And we humans tend to be very easy to influence with visuals or text, therefore my expectations were low .. I was waiting to dislike it.

Then when I got it, with the typical luxurious YSL La Vestiarie presentation, the 125ml version .. I opened it, it was already potent without spraying and two sprays on each shoulder and one on the wrist to see what will it be ..

This starts very smoky and spicy in the same time, the pepper does a great job and the elemi with its resinous character makes it very mysterious, oriental like.

Then you are hit with the saffron, but not in big quantity .. and a big heart of frankincense, almost reminding me of the Dhofar one from Amouage, very very high quality smelling.

And in a few minutes, the awesomeness comes to life .. a vanilla to die for, in the company of the strong smoke and the nicest frankincense you can smell in a non Amouage/OmanLuxury.

Projects like a maniac for 4 hours or more .. then up to 8 hours stays like a skin scent, but so addictive .. so far this is the first scent which made sniff my arms over and over again.

I know Dominic Ropion created Vanagloria too, which is regarded as one of the nicest vanilla out there .. and I do not know the Laboratorio Olfativo creation but if they smell similar like someone said, why is that bad? Ropion created Promise for Malle and Oud Aquilaria for OmanLuxury which are 1 to 1 .. how is this not good, I would ask?

YSL made a good job here, the scent is awesome .. and has nothing to do with the name.

CopyCat
Babycat, also known as Copycat, is an exact copy clone of Vanagloria by Laboratorio Olfattivo.

Created by the same perfumer (Dominique Ropion) who seems like he used the same formula to gain double money.

Since laboratorio olfattivo is true underground niche and youtubers hardly get at that, ysl is easier to hype. I’ll stick with vanagloria. Both are caramelized incense. Same juice in 2 different bottles. I really can’t understand why nobody knows about Vanagloria and Babycat is out of stock :-)
Ropion is laughing at that i’m sure.

Similarities:

Rosendo Mateu 5: 75%
Vanagloria: 101% (altough i wouldn’t say similarity, is actually the same juice in 2 different bottles).

More than vanilla
I'm a big fan of Rosendo Mateu 5, which Babycat is always compared to. Vanilla is my favorite note, I like the animal print this was inspired by and I obviously adore baby cats (who doesn't?). So I was already sure that I wouldn't hate this before I even tried it, and it really is quite a lovely fragrance.

It has the same blend of sweetness, muskiness and sharp saffron that RM 5 has, so this is not a simple vanilla scent. I wouldn't say the two are twins though.
Babycat starts out quite spa-like and even herbal. I have no idea where this is coming from, nothing in the notes list indicates a herbal scent, but I got it every time I sampled this. This is something I don't get in RM 5 and can honestly do without.
The next difference I notice is that the vanilla in here is warmer and more buttery, which I love. It's mixed with a cool, almost soapy frankincense note. Together they feel soothing and cozy, but the saffron and pepper keep everything lively.
This is a scent of contrasts that come together in harmony.

There is something smokey about this, too, but if you want an even smokier version of this scent profile, you also need to try Queen of the Night by The Merchant of Venice.

There is one thing that I love in 5 and don't get in Babycat (or Queen of the Night), and that's the heavy dose of floral creaminess. It just takes the scent to a whole new level.
I would say that these are different enough to own both, but I know that I would always reach for 5 if I had to chose. So I don't need Babycat in my life. My bank account surely feels relieved.

Custard creams and hype
I am surprised!

Yep! I bought into the hype and ordered a sample. I don’t know what it was but my birthday passed and though I had got some very thoughtful presents from my Wife and daughter, I wanted to spoil myself with a fragrance purchase.

I had a list of contenders. This was on the list; along with six others.

That list now, just those six others. Well four others.

I don’t get it, no that’s not right; I DO GET IT, I get the hype, I understand that. But, but the level of hype is really unwarranted. I don’t think it’s the same fragrance that everyone else has been huffing and then cheerleading about on differing platforms. This is a sticky, sweet almost predictable thing. Like a Zack Snyder movie, it’s popular and bombastic but once really examined you see all the failures. I have to think that YSL must have one of the best PR and marketing teams in the industry; as the last few I have tried from them have been mediocre pongs but clamouring adoration from others. I really thought this was going to be difficult decision but it was almost instantaneous.

The sweetness is very cloying and thick. I can feel my teeth itch from the vanilla; which affects everything else. It gives the leather a stickiness that is not appealing. It’s like someone has left a tub of cheap ice cream to melt over a synthetic leather car seat. I’m not a vanilla fan, if it’s in a fragrance for me to like it; it has to be toned down and dried out. This is all to familiar and part of me was kinda expecting it; “I bet that’s similar to X” And I’m not wrong it is similar to ‘X’.

Shame really as I was hoping it would make a great gift to someone really dear and special to me. Me.

Oh…custard creams. This makes me think of custard creams. I am not a fan of them.

Clingy Cat
Such a bizarre name for a fragrance. I anticipate the squinty eyed stare when people compliment and curiously ask what I'm wearing. I find myself pridefully stating "Yves Saint Laurent", just before mumbling "Babycat" with slight embarrassment. "As in kitty cat?" Yeah, sure. Truthfully, I bare no guilt when wearing this fragrance as I genuinely enjoy it. Is it worth the hype? Yes, of course! It was created by Dominique Ropion! However, it is not worth paying the ridiculous upcharge for the sake of saying you have it. I was lucky enough to have a friend grab me a bottle from Harrod's in London. Babycat is a fragrance for both vanilla and frankincense lovers. While it evolves beautifully, I favor the dry down. The final phase of this fragrance is where the frankincense note is most prominent. This fragrance opens with sueded vanilla and pepper, although it doesn't come off peppery by any means; at least not to me. Soft, yet deep and lingering. This cat has good longevity and clings to me without a problem; and I should add I don't have the most hydrated skin. Babycat is not close enough to Caftan to be deemed a substitute, but it is in the family. While I have very little desire to wear this fragrance right now, I see myself reaching for this often the moment September is upon us.

If I hadn't known it before, this fragrance only reinforced the fact that I love suede as a note in fragrance. Worth at least 8 meows.

Sweet vanilla combined with less smoke and beautiful saffron. A bit to sweet in the heart but a great and seductive fragrance.

Babycat opens peppery with a dominant olibanum and a resinous elemi. It continues smoky but with saffron, a powdery vanilla and leather.

I can't undertand the rate, 8.5 for an incredible boring vanille perfume. Even some designer ones like Spicebomb are far over this one.

Dry vanilla over a dusty suede + cedar, sprinkled with earthy black pepper. Leathery, woody, lightly spiced & smoked with little sweetness.

Opens with an unexpected savory punch, thanks to a hefty dose of pepper & saffron. The vanilla has a buttery quality to it. Smoky-sweet.
