This is a church pew scent if I’ve ever met one. Fresh wood varnish and antique oak form the heart while the softer milk and incense meld to create a diffused, vanillic glow. The blood orange is the main character; orchard air one breath, wood oil the next. I don’t hate the cleaning product slant to it. There’s a handsome “historic property” feel to Hildegard, of dust and dankness but also comfort and care. Subtract the incense and I’d call it a natural history museum scent. Sadly, most of the Pearfats in the discovery bundle did not jive with my skin and took on a mildewy lean, but Hildegard stays faithful on both flesh and fabric. Burned through my tester in under a week. Longevity and sillage are on the gentle (~3h) end of the spectrum. Easily my favourite of the house, but by no means a blind buy. You have to want to smell like old church.

Mental Snapshot: You’re the first guest of the day in a small-town chapel. The floors are polished to glass, but the cases of bygone curios and relics remain sugared with dust – either too fragile or too holy to be given a brush. You slide into a confession booth and peel yourself a plump orange, stolen straight from the priest's gardens.

tl;dr: confessional citrus

Between strictness and sexuality
Not many European fragrance lovers are familiar with the DIY perfume brand Pearfat, which has been operating since around 2022 - not least because of its very limited availability outside the American market.

With her feminist queer brand, founder and self-taught perfumer Alie Kiral has struck a chord with a new, self-confident American scene that not only sees perfume as an accessory, but also knows how to convey personal and political attitudes through the olfactory story.

However, anyone expecting pleasingly sweet fragrances for an extremely young audience after these explanations and the playful bottle designs is likely to be disappointed.
Her creations often play with unusual notes - even a naivety that could often be dismissed as "doesn't work" in traditional olfactory Europe.

The same goes for Sister Hildegard: I know most of the entire line and would say that this is one of the top 3 most difficult and unusual fragrances from the house.

Sister Hildegard is not part of the main collection and is intended as a limited "seasonal" creation, for which some limited edition bottles were recently produced again - but which sold out again within a few days.

The fragrance tells the story of Hildegard v. Bingen - also crowned "the world's first feminist" in some circles - with all her pious Catholic surroundings and a frivolous, sexual and all-too-human twist.

In general, I can't shake off the feeling that I'm smelling the most authentic antithesis to all oriental perfumes in the world: Roman Catholic, pious, strict, serious, conservative.

The start is extremely staid: freshly ironed habit, neatly folded in the old wooden wardrobe.
And when I say "fresh laundry", I mean something completely different from what is understood by this accord in the perfume world: Unscented detergent and an almost chemical note of freshly unwrapped clothes.

Ordinarily speaking: A panty-high puller. The strict belt, Mephisto ladies' shoes, no neckline, this one a brooch. Vial necklace.
A bowl of hosts on the ornate wooden sideboard.

In general, it's interesting to see how Catholic something can smell without this now terribly inflationary-opulent incense fuss.

This is not the big cathedral, but the remote Catholic boarding school where naughty boys are still beaten on the fingers with a ruler. Discipline and order. Rules. On the outside, parents are smiled at - suggesting a peaceful coexistence. There is no camera surveillance behind the walls.

But then comes the twist: drydown for the most advanced. A glass of milk with a raw egg stirred in on the side. Frivolous, lascivious masturbation - Hildegard has had enough and retreats into a chamber, locks herself away and explores the primal pleasures of life. Then the habit is smoothed out, pulled up, her face serious again. The pious life goes on.

This fragrance really only works for a very special circle.
Anyone expecting compliments here needs to travel to the Vatican.

However, anyone who is seriously interested in fragrance art and is self-confident - beyond any projection, space-taking, male dominance and self-expression - will experience a fantastically challenging story here that is second to none.

Courageous perfumers - they still exist.
Anyone who asks me why I collect perfume: precisely because of moments like this.

The way this captures the smell of dust in an old building is exquisite. Incense without being smoky, worn wood without weight.
