An ode to rice
A beautifully musky, fresh, and only slightly sweet take on rice. This opens with smell of freshly steamed rice paired with pandan. The pandan helps elevate the rice by adding a touch of green, earthy, sweetness without overpowering the steamed rice. The heart of this is a buttery orris with a fragrant jasmine rice. It’s reminiscent of rice pudding almost but it’s too starchy and light to go in that territory, and not very sweet either. The dry down is beautifully warm and musky with remnants of that jasmine rice. It’s a very comforting rice scent and perfectly balanced all throughout. A gorgeous fragrance

Rice? What rice?!
What a disappointment! I had ordered the discovery set from D'Annam just because of this scent, and I feel truly let down. I'm a huge fan of rice and pandan notes, so much so that I almost blind-bought a full bottle of this. Luckily, wisdom prevailed, and I opted for the discovery set. The projection on this is so poor, even after spraying it liberally on my wrists and clothes I can barely pick it up. I thought I was anosmic and asked my partner and friends what they think of my perfume. The invariable reply: "Oh, are you wearing perfume?!"

All that aside, there's so little rice in this, it's like even the leftover chaff in a bag of jasmine rice would feel more pronounced. And so stingy with the pandan, how could you??? I was hoping for a whiff of my favorite fragrance that made me fall in love with rice, Annam. Now THAT was a rice fragrance, rich with steaming basmati and florals, there was no way you could ignore that, like holding your head above a steaming pot of rich, just off the stove boiling rice.

vanishing act
Sensational opening scene, followed by two hours of whispery orris monologue. The first thirty seconds, though? It conjures up the very moment you open a rice-maker and are met with a bank of soft, starchy steam. But what had me barking at my tester was the pandan. THE PANDAN. It manifests as this sweet, nearly-coconutty green vein and partners so well with the rice. Pandan is my white whale accord and I was so tickled to find it here. Unfortunately, all this rapidly devolved to pure, dry orris powder. It’s not bad, but it’s literally just orris.

If I got those first thirty seconds a bit longer – even just an hour – I could rationalise a full bottle. Someone needs to hybridise the bright, pandan-infused opening of White Rice with the indefatigable rice core of Arielle Shoshana’s Sunday, because that’d be better than sliced bread. Or steamed rice.

Mental Snapshot: A sacred manuscript, which begins with a lushly-illustrated initial R. It’s the most beautiful-looking letter R you’ve ever seen. Like the Spongebob “The” essay scene. But the rest of the text is in eight-point Courier New, and instead of the “Rice” you were promised, it’s an encyclopedic history about Rhizoma iridis.

tl;dr: an olfactory allegory for trust issues

Starch blanket
This opens with a starchy, woody component that mimics uncooked rice, not steamed rice, in the vein of Meo Fusciuni's Sogni opening note rather than the steamed, lactonic fluffiness of Poesie's Soft or even the mellower, silkier creaminess of Affinessence's Santal Basmati. This is much more one note than Sogni, however, which transforms dramatically and benefits greatly from flecks of incense and bamboo, vetiver and tobacco. White Rice relies much more heavily on a well-worn path of heady jasmine and creamy orris, to carry the rest of the journey, settling into a pleasant, musky skin scent, dewy and ever so slightly sweet.

Disappointing
After seeing so many TT content creators and redditors rave about the fragrance, I blind bought this.

What a disappointment. The starchy (dry, uncooked rice) scent is lovely, but lasts all of 10 minutes on my skin and then vanishes into nothing. I've tried overspraying, and even then it doesn't last--by the time I get out of the house, it's gone. My body chemistry just doesn't mesh well with this one.

A cold bowl of white rice blended with fresh, clean musks. It's pretty, but lacks the warm, sexy nuttiness of my favorite rice scents.

The rice note is strong at first, but dissipates pretty quickly. Inoffensive and soft. Has a very slight urine scent on my skin.

Reminds me a bit of cleaning saddles; not really leather but of grain and saddle soap. Very relaxing, would make a good bedtime scent.

Smells like rice for less than 15 mins, then turns into a cheap CLEAN brand type floral musk

The initial alcohol smell took hours to dissipate. The rice scent was lovely once its’ turn was up, but it had a short run after the alcohol

Unremarkable on my skin, almost like single note rice that quickly dissipates to nothing. I only get cedar, jasmine, and tonka on clothes.

Clean musk & cedar combo with the starchy ghost of jasmine rice. Lacks the character that L'Eau Papier has. Unfortunately forgettable.
