Intoxicating
WHAT IT IS
Drinking jamaica juice by the wood shed on a hot day. Rouge Karkade opens with a bright currant & pomegranate syrup, then quickly settles into a plush hibiscus tea with vanilla sugar and a restrained, gently smoked oud. There's a faint leather accord somewhere, but otherwise it's deep, opulent, easygoing hibiscus oud for 6-8hrs with the scent staying on clothing even after washing. Decadent in cold weather, goes wandering on hot days.

WHO IT'S FOR
The 30+ crowd, unisex leaning feminine. You've maybe been looking for an oud fragrance, but have been disappointed when they're mixed with rose or smell like tire rubber. Your perfect Saturday night is a flowy skirt/unbuttoned shirt on a sunny patio with a glass of wine.

ALTERNATIVES
Hibiscus is rare (at least in unisex/men's fragrance) so Rouge Karkade smells unique to my nose. Among ouds, Tom Ford Oud Wood is a luxurious distant cousin, smoothly blended down with woods and cardamom instead of fruity tea - it's more tailored suit than safari shirt. Chopard Oud Malaki carries the same syrupy sweetness, opening with citrus and tobacco, but it's much spicier. For more of a vibe match, Chris Collins African Rooibos strikes a similar "red tea at sunset" effect, though it's much airier with far less sweetness.

FINAL THOUGHTS
I encountered Rouge Karkade at a perfume store in Johannesburg and it instantly brought back memories of jamaica bars sold by pushcart vendors on hot days in Los Angeles when I was a child... the beautiful oud note was icing on the cake. The rest of Reserve en Afrique's lineup is wonderful and their brand story is compelling; very very highly recommended.

Stunning african vibes.
First off, let's talk about the Parfum house, which I wasn't familiar with. Réserve en Afrique uses premium African raw materials and has a strong ethical commitment to environmental conservation and local communities... and that alone tugs at my heartstrings.

Secondly, the scent. It's a mind-blowing, hypnotic scent. It opens with tangy, lively yet elegant fruity notes, then I perceive a fresh, slightly tart sensation (perhaps hibiscus and pomegranate). After just a few minutes, the magic comes in... a soft, warm heart arrives, with floral notes and a surprising vanilla. I'm then driven crazy by those smoky, woody notes, which, along with vanilla and hibiscus, give the fragrance depth and depth. I knew oud, or any interpretation of it, would please me here. Guys, it's masterful... and finally the temperatures do it justice. It's truly splendid. Beautiful African vibes.
