An original take ...
I love Roses ... especially middle eastern ones, but give me a Rose fragrance and I am generally happy. I love Cedar too ... so add them together and a fragrance comes into existence that I absolutely have to have. Rose Malaki ticked the boxes enough for me to chance a blind, inflight duty free purchase ... and I couldn't be happier!

Upon initial application, I was a touch disappointed ... the Rose/Saffron combination too reminiscent of so many others in this genre. I suppose that when these two ingredients are used together, the way they combine is so typical that no other olfactory experienced could be reached.
I was sitting there, wafting my arm around in front of my face, waiting for the Oud to appear, which it did not. Instead, a really gorgeous cedar note started making it's way up through what, by now, had become masses of slightly dusty Damascus roses ... lifting them from midday stupor as if the Cedar was the herald of a cool evening.
The thick, velvety Rose petals in combination with a touch of leather create the feeling of soft suede on the skin ... while the whole experience is sweetened ever so slightly by the presence of a little Vanilla.
Rose Malaki is undoubtedly a spicy Rose ... but not in the way one would imagine a spicy fragrance to be. It's almost as if the spice here is carried into the room from afar on a subtle breeze while an open cedar box used to store suede gloves catches petals from a huge arrangement of Roses placed next to it.

I haven't been moved to poetic writing about a fragrance in some time ... this one conjures up very specific pictures in my head, of opulence and luxury, marble balustrades and dusty desert sunsets ... and silk window hangings fluttering gently on spiced breezes.

Try it ... I dare you!!

Pure Class
I am pleasantly surprised by Chopard's latest offerings. Both Oud Malaki and Rose Malaki are well-done and classy. They remain two of my favorite perfumes. Though Rose Malaki is almost exactly like Aramis Calligraphy Rose, there are a few subtle differences which make me want to keep both perfumes in my collection.

Of course, both are Middle Eastern roses with gorgeous bottles. Both open with a strong saffron and rose combination and dry down to a cedarwood finish. The difference is in the pyramid: while Calligraphy Rose quickly takes on a creamy note, Rose Malaki does not become creamy until the very end. Instead, Rose Malaki maintains more of a masculine character throughout the life of the scent with a strong cedarwood and leather note. The life of the perfume is short-lived and the creamy soft drydown appears within half an hour or so. The rose is almost completely gone by that time as well, but that does not bother me.

I like how Rose Malaki opens strong with rose/saffron/cedar and becomes softer at the end. The perfume has a nice sillage but as I said, the longevity is not too great. Even so, it is a pleasure to watch this scent morph as time goes on. I adore it.

Once Rose, smoked please!
The Chopard Malaki series fascinated me at first sight with its appearance. Yes, I know, they say you shouldn't be impressed by appearances alone, but one cannot help but admire the wonderful bottles for hours. The Chopard Malaki series consists of the following fragrance lines: Amber Malaki, Musk Malaki, Oud Malaki, and Rose Malaki. I wanted to buy them all at once, but they are not that easy to find. Some distant USA Chopard watch shops or not-so-lovingly named Brexit stores offered 1 to 2 fragrances, but I wasn't really convinced. However, a glance towards the East quickly changed that. Almost every Arab country from Qatar to Bahrain to the United Arab Emirates offers all 4 fragrances at all airports and various online shops. At very reasonable prices too. Fortunately, I have a frequent flyer in my circle of friends, and so my Rose Malaki arrived a few days ago.

The brown-gold packaging with black lettering is very discreet. It did lose a hit in the right corner during the long journey (see photo below), but this does not detract from its appearance. The bottle is round, but actually also octagonal with 8 semi-rounded sides. You can feel the full glass in your hand like a precious Ralph Lauren vase. The cap is also round/octagonal and closes with a magnetic closure. The inscription "Chopard Rose Malaki" is only a sticker, which I knew from various forums and was not disappointed, although one would initially expect a small metal plate.

The top, heart, and base notes are quite close together, and you feel the dominant rose from the very beginning. Not a pink summer rose on the dress of a prepubescent teenager, but a night rose. A masculine, dark rose with initially a lot of smoke, as if you just lit your Indian incense stick. Shortly thereafter, you are transported to the leather supplier of the Emirati sultans, where the leathers of the most unlikely animals are spread out. The patchouli-vanilla finish rounds off this unique fragrance.

Thank you, Chopard! Although I will never be able to buy your (overpriced) watches, as long as you continue in the perfume business, I will be your loyal customer. The frequent flyer is on his way to the airport again...

Tohuwabohu in the Orient
Something is brewing! A "storm" of a special kind made from fragrance notes!
Anyone who has ever been to a "souk" or a bazaar can imagine what I mean. A bustling mix of rose essences, incense, exotic woods, possibly good pipe tobacco, and all sorts of spices. Just as lively and busy as it is in such a market. But it is not a "chaos"! Rather, it is an orderly Tohuwabohu!
One stall sells only all kinds of roses for planting in the garden. Another only delicious incense. A third, alongside magnificent colorful clothing, also offers many freshly tanned leather goods. Yet another has all the spices of the Orient for sale. And last but not least, stalls that sell "Arabian scents." Patchouli and wood essences, so fragrant that even the last "bored nose" starts to sniff - "MMmmhs" and Aaahs can be heard, mouths open and eyes wide as ducats.
Now the whole commotion comes together, tooth by tooth, like a zipper, the gentle wind brings everything from all directions to condense into an opulent fragrance elixir, leaving no nuance out. Now the mixture "hums" quietly but richly, similar to the chatter on the marketplace. Some things can get a bit "grumpy," but always good-natured too! :-))

A darker, masculine rose. A bloody rose with steely thorns, wrapped in leather ready to seduce any woman or man.

Dark noble leather, burnt deep roses, and a hint of fine saffron. Rose resembles Brulure, just with leather. Distinctive and classy!
