Sexy, animalic and masculine - but only for a short while
Bear is one of those fragrances where you'd wish there'd be a stop button for the dry down. In the beginning, you get an awesome, animalic, furry, masculine spicy scent with a touch of sweetness. As it dries down, it dials far back. Yes, leathery, woody, spicy and animalic, but no where near the start. Really too bad. Dries down into the ho-hums; nothing I'd want to buy a FB of.

Longevity for me was quite good; got about 10 hours out of it. But it quickly dries down into a moderate projection and then a comfortable, close scent bubble - essentially a skin scent that lasts.

A bear of a fragrance
I discovered the Polish brand Wolf Brothers in Krakow. As their brand name suggests each of their fragrances is structured around a different animal; you will find ‘Goat’, ‘Boar’, ‘Wisent’ and the eponymous ‘Wolf’. All of them with their own distinctive notes to represent that particular animal. Now, this concept is far from unique of course - immediately I think about Zoologist fauna-based scents - but some of Wolf Brother’s creations capture the protagonists very well. So for instance the ‘Bear’, which belongs to the amber/woody/gourmand camp.

Immediately there is a thick sweet smell of dark chocolate and cocoa, mixed with some spices - some traditionally found in baking like nutmeg or cinnamon, some on a more piquant side, like ginger or chili pepper. The spicy notes provide the perfect counter-balance to the heaviness of vanilla, which is at the heart of the perfume and takes over as the top notes begin to fade. Now, one of the main accords is honey/propolis, which I personally don’t find easy to distinguish, unless you know it is there (as previously mentioned I smelt chocolate instead) - what it does however, is make the scent more rounded and three-dimensional. I also get some smoky undertones, but rather than originating from burning wood in a fireplace, it reminds me of incense smoke. The fragrance settles eventually into warm resins and some more musky woody vanilla, instantly reminding me of Tom Ford’s ‘Tobacco Vanille’, but with less of that oriental quality.
You can expect a decent projection for quite some time - about 5-6 hours. Due to its composition it is a wintery fragrance for me; the scent is just not dry enough to be worn when temperatures are soaring.

This is a rich, opulent fragrance, but it steers clear of the overtly luxurious ‘Tobacco Vanille’. Instead it takes a different path - one that is grounded, earthy and animalistic, just like a bear roaming the woods. It is warm and full, yet in no way cuddly. Beneath what is cozy and comforting one can sense a raw energy rumbling. Behind the warm appearance there is a dangerous animal.

This is a Bear
If I could describe this perfume with one word it would be mead. Blueberry, spiced mead more accurately but it's the perfect perfume for a bear; their diets definitely consists of something similar. Honeyed wild blueberries with a hint of cinnamon and a touch of animalic sweat. I can imagine Serge Lutens making a perfume similar if they removed the gothic aspect of their perfumes.

Chain-Smoking Grizzlies
Background: Parfumos sends me samples, I test them without any prior knowledge of the fragrances and describe my reaction - that of an untrained amateur.

Uuaar! Rarely have I been so directly shouted at, well, through the nose. At first, I see a bearded man in his mid-fifties standing in front of me, wearing a leather jacket. With thick silver chains and tattoos. He enjoys whiskey, smokes cigars daily, and has a voice about 5 octaves below Darth Vader. So, this might be a men's fragrance. In the second part of this adventurous journey, I am first hit by labdanum, resins, licorice, and something sweet (sage?). As a whole mélange, it feels a bit like pickled smoked fruit. Does such a thing even exist? Over time, the bitter smoky note recedes, making way for a bit more sweetness. Thank goodness. Vanilla and wood, I suddenly think of a typically masculine grumpy bear, who is as reluctant to leave his cave as our children are to get out of bed in the morning, yet still lovable.

Because I guess I’m a bear myself...
I found Bear by chance online - and immediately ordered the Discovery Set. A perfume that is named after how many describe me - Bear. And what can I say - when it arrived - and I wore it... let me give you a hint: it has become my winter signature.

The opening is very strong - with thick, viscous honey and a dark iris in the background. Somehow everything is dark and cozy - somehow comforting. This is not the wild beast - but the bear that is just about to go to sleep - having eaten its fill. Strong - Protective. I feel so comfortable with this scent that it gives me a sense of security and warmth. It lasts on me until the next day - and I am often asked what I am wearing...

Bear makes me happy, wraps me up, protects me. Deep back in the dark - I can lay down to sleep, nothing will happen to me there. I feel strong. I have rarely had a perfume that evokes such strong associations in me.

Dark, sweet resins, animalic honey, musky, dirty and spicy fur. Adult sweetness. The Black Knight + The Dark Side; familiar but great mix.

Something bout it just takes me to the past. It's almost hypnotic, this scent. Masculine as well as simultaneously very sweet and grown-up.

Very powerful, animalistic, balsamic honey. I'd recommend caution if you have sensitive skin - I had a minor skin reaction when sampling.

It starts in an interesting spicy/ honeyed/green way, but ends in a weird feeling like animal ball of hair in your throat…Not so pleasant

The bear in the Hundred Acre Wood.
Climbs around the conifer trees,
sneaks around the honey,
gets stuck in the resin.

Winnie the Pooh must have inspired this one. The resinous and sweet notes take center stage, while the rest just rounds it out. Cozy.
