Do you feel the connection?

Certain houses I like more than others, be it designer houses or niche. There are brands I praise and brands I won’t even poke with a stick. It’s just a matter of taste of course… but what exactly makes you connect with certain brands?

It must have something to do with that first encounter. Maybe you’ve seen a commercial of it with your favourite actor. Maybe you’ve read about it from a reviewer. Or maybe you just walked by this amazing smelling shop, and you swear that the second bottle on the top shelf winked at you.

You decide to have a look, you see the beautiful bottle. The golden liquid that shines in that special showcase in the shop. You lay your hands upon the cap. Oh my… is that magnetic? Rrrrrmeow! A quick sniff at the atomizer spills the goods. You know you’re in for a treat.

And then… the spray. The burst of heavenly mist hits the paper ‘mouillette’. You knew it would be good but did you know it would be that good? It’s something you’ve never smelled before. Ooooh Lord yes. A few seconds later the scent strip goes in the bin, you get on with your life with one difference. You’re now craving to smell that godly smell again. You want it in your collection. To put that beautiful piece of art on a pedestal.

Oh yes that was definitely my case with my very first Dunhill perfume. It might have gone completely different of course if I picked an other bottle or brand.
I’m very curious what makes certain brands and houses tick with you? Do you have a favourite brand that can’t do anything wrong in your eyes (or nose)? Or the other way around, which brands do you walk around in a big circle?

I know I'm a bit behind on commenting, but I really enjoyed reading this article @Ceesie ! 👏
I love hearing about particular brands that people are loyal to and why.
You mentioned that Dunhill was your favorite - how did it come to be your favorite?
What about that first testing experience in particular, turned it into a fan of the brand?
For me, I agree with the comment below - as the brands I enjoy the most, are typically ones where I enjoy a large number of their fragrances. It doesn't matter if the brand is "mainstream" or "basic" for me (like Bath & Body Works, Victoria's Secret, etc.) - all I care about, is that I personally enjoy it.
Thank you for sharing, I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts! 🤗

Thank you for your comment @Gourmandgrl! Dunhill is a brand I remember from way way back. My first paid job. I had this manager that always smelled really good. I remembered he always wore Dunhill. Don’t ask me why. So that’s probably why I went on and tried some of the Signature line.
At the moment it isn’t my number one frag anymore but I keep carrying a warm heart for them. There’s not one fragrance I dislike so far from that house.

For me it's all about the scents, I just like the brands where I like most of their fragrances. Amouage is probably my favorite niche and Dior and Tom Ford for designer. But it's definitely not that "they can't do anything wrong in my eyes," there are plenty of frags from my favorite brands that I can't stand (Meander, Lineage, Sauvage EDT, Cologne Blanche, Eau d'Ombre Leather, Vanilla Sex just to name a few). But I am more inclined to blind buy new releases of theirs, because I think there's just a higher chance I'll like them. As for brands I avoid, I think the worst offenders are expensive niche brands that are just glorified clone houses like Boadicea the Victorious, Tiziana Terenzi, and even Clive Christian and Parfums de Marly to an extent. I have a lot of PdM but it was mostly from when I was first getting into niche and didn't have a very discerning nose.

Same here, I agree 100%. I also follow particular brands from my own laziness. If I want a new fragrance, I will check new releases from my favourite brands first. This is mainly because, I tend to have fragrance-mania only few times a year, so I am not following all new releases and not testing scents often.
I also agree on Tom Ford and Amouage as ones of favourite brands for me.

This is a question I have wondered about. Still haven't found an answer.
