A perfume Addict’s Diary 05: May

In my mind May was quite calm. But in the end I have a lot to get off my chest, so even if it's a bit early on in the month, I'll pen this thing down. So sit tight, put on some comfy slippers, have a drink and enjoy.

Easy like a sunday morning

May started off calm, as promised. I had just bought a bottle of Uden and I don’t want to get kicked out of the house by the missus so yeah. But after a week of two I’m getting restless again. Now I have quite a couple of Xerjoff bottles, I feel this urge to expand that collection. The collection that Naxos is part of isn’t that expensive if you know where to look. They’re all quite fresh and cirtussy I believe. Not something I want to bring into the collection per se, so I’ll pass for now. I’ll be a good boy and sample them first.

Guerlain is also a brand I constantly hear good things about. Last month I got my first Guerlain (Habit Rouge Rouge Privé) which I really like so now I'm eyeballing things like Vetiver Eau de Toilette, Guerlain Homme Eau de Parfum and Héritage After Shave Lotion. Basically all the stuff you can't find in any store around here... Maybe I'll just plan another trip to Paris then, and visit all their beautiful boutiques 😁

Then along came Mother's Day. My son and I wanted to give her a perfume, but nothing too expensive. We saw that Goldfield & Banks have great little 10ml bottles, so we picked Pacific Rock Moss, a nice and fresh summer banger. They have some very nice ones besides that one as well that went straight onto my wishlist, no rush though. I've now got this new mantra:

Do I have to have it NOW? Do I HAVE to have it now?

Collections on Parfumo

I don't know about you, but I love to curate my collections all the time. Looking through my wishlists, see if I didn't miss anything or making new lists of stuff. Anyway, as my wishlist was growing and growing, I figured I'd only put stuff on it that I'm absolutely acquainted with. I made a new list of stuff I'd want, but have to get a decant of first. This way I'm blueballing it better (thanks for that expression @Wusubi 😂👌).

But! Somehow I've got this bug in my head. I'm playing with the idea of doing a blindbuy. It's like a gamble, and I'm craving some excitement. So I've created another list on here with possible blindbuys. And I'm not talking those cheap Laliques or anything, I'm talking exclusivity. Stuff you can't find easily in shops. If you have any suggestions for sure fire hits, please let me know!!

Nutbush City Limits

I was in town last week, had a hoot. My favorite perfume house Skins had opened a new location there, so I had a visit. I tried Burgundy Oud which was very nice, strong and long lasting. I can still smell it off my coat and it's been over a week ago now! Also visited some lesser perfume stores to smell Kouros Eau de Toilette and Antaeus Eau de Toilette. At first I gave Kouros the trophy but in the end Antaeus is the more interesting one. Less grandpa juicy, more depth and feelgood wearing it. I've gotten a sample of that from the store owner. Later that week the store had a 25% discount offering but I resisted because they have those kind of actions all the time so I'm even hoping for 30% off when it's Father's Day. Quickly, what was that mantra again!

Also I bought a set of 5 decants of Penhaligon's there at Skins. I had high hopes but to be honest there's only one that's a Full Bottle contender and that's Halfeti Leather. My son really loves The Blazing Mister Sam and I can't blame him, that one's amazing too but does not fit me.

Angels

And then came along an Angel called @LeatherLace who provided me with an enormous load of decants. Just wow all those scents are amazing! A lot of stuff I always wanted to smell, but also some stuff I wasn't familiar with at all but landed on my radar now. I've yet to try a lot of her stuff but I'm already smitten by Unutamam and Megamare. That'll fix my addiction for now!

Hi! Enjoyed reading your blog. I was curious if there are any Dutch perfume houses and have you tried any of their scents?

Hi @Raluko111 ! There are but a couple that I know of. There's "Van De Zotte". They have a perfume called Mills that's supposed to be very good. I haven't smelled any of there perfumes though. And then there's a better known one called Fugazzi. I know they have some great stuff like Passionfroudh and Goudh (don't know why it scores so low).

Sounds like a good month 🤩 I really like your mantra, sounds like it can help quite well!
I’m happy to hear you’re stepping into the stinker zone! It has been recommended before, but you really need to put your nose on Luxor!

Always enjoy hearing your fragrance adventures @Ceesie ! So kind of @LeatherLace to provide you with so many decants too 🥰 I love hearing about the generosity of fragrance friends across the community!

What started out as 'quiet' has taken a nice, pleasant turn: blind buying ..... (I agree with Omnipotato) becomes something self-evident at some point. Experience has taught me, at least, that I can trust my most beloved brands but also my own preference regarding compositions.
It pleases me to read that you enjoy the decants, I personally always find it nice to introduce people to scents that they would like to try. Especially when no samples are available directly from the brand.

Yes! It’s one of those rules I set for myself earlier: do NOT blindbuy! But now I’m starting to think that maybe I can, judging by reviews and note breakdowns. And for a bit of excitement.

@Tzapan also much appreciate your opinions. I’ll check the YSL you mentioned. Egoist I’m not a fan of. I used to own that in the 00’s and I have some bad associations with it.

I think there comes a part of the fragrance journey that your success in blind buys goes up quite a bit. Once you are familiar with perfumers, houses, and note combinations I don't think it's that risky. Naxos is very well-loved, but I didn't like it myself, so I'd recommend sampling first.
Looking at your "possible blindbuy" collection, I'd recommend either Vanille Havane or Luxor. I like Risvelium and King Blue but they are both VERY polarizing. Moustache is a bit too tame/unexciting for a blind buy.
I was also looking through your "tested" collection to see if you had tested Silver Oud since King Blue is quite similar and I saw you haven't tested ANY Amouage? Get on that, ASAP!!

@Ceesie yeah that makes sense. I usually will have to remember which scents I tried in the shop and add them to the collection later. But if you like Silver Oud, then King Blue has a very similar oud note, just an added jammy blackcurrant + mandarin top note and is more woody/less ambery in the base.
Tabac 28 is actually similar to both Vanille Havane and Luxor, Luxor has a big tobacco component as well.

Thank you so much for your recommendations @Omnipotato and the time to weed through my collections! In fact I already smelled some Amouages, also Silver Oud. I just don’t always hit the tested button because I don’t want to be on my phone all the time in shops.
I really think I’d love Vanille Havane. But I’m going to buy Le Labo Tabac also later on in the year and I’m afraid for some overlap there.
I’ve removed Moustache, I was already a bit weary of that one.

@Ceesie your brain can handle so much? It seems like a lot. Antaeus was my serious pick when I was 25 It was tremendous . I haven't bought it lately fearing it will be watered down from reformulations. Go for Egoiste it is still present its nineties glory, has ambrette in the base notes. Guerlain has changed the rectangular formula of Vetiver and Heritage, they probably bought back every single old bottle themselves. Do not buy the new formulas without trying them on tester. Opium homme YSL I think you would love. It is special. And pretty soon I think it ll be discontinued.

Sounds like a calm month indeed for your standards. I wish I could show more restraint haha.
I recently joined the “one blind buy a month” club with Loudo - Maurice never misses with oud.
I nominate I-III Russian Tea for a potential blind buy, lovely aromatic!
